Camping near Factoryville, Pennsylvania
Factoryville sits in Wyoming County in northeastern Pennsylvania, on the western edge of the Endless Mountains and about ten miles from Scranton. The borough is best known as the home of Keystone College, but for RV travelers its draw is location: rolling wooded hills, small creeks, and quick access to the 1,445-acre Lackawanna State Park, which sits ten miles north of Scranton in Lackawanna County.
The area's anchor campground is Lackawanna State Park, a Pennsylvania DCNR facility built around a 198-acre lake stocked with warm and cold water species including largemouth bass, trout, pickerel, channel catfish, bullhead, and muskellunge. Private options nearby include Highland Campgrounds, Shore Forest Campground, and Shady Rest Campground, along with Benton Hills Mobile Home Park for longer-term stays.
Most trip planning centers on I-81, which runs a few miles east of town. Lackawanna State Park is reached from Exit 199 of I-81, then three miles west on PA Route 524, making it a straightforward drive-in for RV renters coming from Scranton, the Poconos, or the New York border.
Things to do near Factoryville
Water recreation drives the summer schedule at Lackawanna Lake. Gas-powered boats are not permitted, but electric motors, sailboats, canoes, and rowboats are common, and the 198-acre lake has 7.5 miles of shoreline for paddling and shore fishing. The lake carries both cold and warm water fisheries, stocked with largemouth bass, trout, pickerel, channel catfish, bullhead, and muskellunge.
On land, roughly 15 miles of multi-use trails are shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, with about 3 more miles reserved for hiking only. Trails loop past the lake, through forests and fields, and along woodland streams. A seasonal swimming pool operates near the campground during summer months, and in winter the lake opens for ice fishing and ice skating.

The main camping window at the region's flagship park is fixed by the state. The Lackawanna State Park campground opens mid-April and closes mid-October, with a maximum stay of 14 consecutive days in the summer season and 21 consecutive days in the off-season. The season typically begins the second Friday in April. Private campgrounds around Factoryville generally follow a similar April-to-October pattern, though some stay open longer for hunting seasons.
Summer is peak. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill quickly, and holiday weekends should be booked months out. Late spring brings cool nights and green-up across the Endless Mountains, while September and early October deliver fall color with lighter crowds.
RV renters should also plan around an active project. Beginning in 2027, the Lackawanna State Park campground is undergoing a major shower house renovation, with portions of the campground temporarily closed in phases while DCNR replaces outdated shower and restroom facilities. Impacted sites are blocked on the reservation system, so check site status before booking.
How to book a campsite
Lackawanna State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Bookings can also be made by phone at 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday.
For pet owners, the Fox Run and Maple Lane loops allow pets at designated sites, and those sites must be reserved specifically. Private parks such as Highland Campgrounds, Shore Forest Campground, and Shady Rest Campground book directly through their own offices, with weekends and holidays going first. Benton Hills Mobile Home Park is oriented toward monthly and seasonal stays rather than nightly RV rentals, so call ahead to confirm availability.
What to expect on the ground
Sites at Lackawanna State Park are wooded and vary in grade. Options include tent sites, walk-in tent sites, RV sites with electric hookups, cabins, and yurts, with cottages and yurts located in the Carpentertown loop. Reviewers note that older RV pads are paved but not always perfectly level. The campground is within walking distance of the lake and swimming pool, and shower houses provide warm showers and flush toilets. A sanitary dump station sits near the campground entrance.
A few practical notes. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks, so download the park map before arrival. Quiet hours run 9 p.m. to 8 a.m., and alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the park.

After the grace period, the refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes around 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A motorhomes about 7 to 10 MPG, while travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Northeastern Pennsylvania gas prices generally track close to the national average, and you will find plenty of large-vehicle-friendly stations along US-11 in Clarks Summit and near I-81 around Dupont.
