RV camping near Fort Loudon, Pennsylvania
Fort Loudon sits in Franklin County in south-central Pennsylvania, just off US 30 and a short drive from Interstate 81. The village is best known as the eastern approach to Cowans Gap State Park, a 1,085-acre park in the beautiful Allens Valley of Fulton County, with a 42-acre lake, two campgrounds, rustic Civilian Conservation Corps cabins, and many trails. State forest land surrounds the park, providing additional options for recreation and natural beauty in all seasons, extending the trail network well beyond the park boundary.
For RV travellers, the area combines a state-park campground with several private options within easy driving distance. Area B at Cowans Gap State Park is the closest developed campground, while Saunderosa Park Inc, Ye Olde Mill Campground, and Twin Bridge Meadow Family Campground offer private-park amenities in the surrounding valleys.
Hagerstown / Antietam Battlefield KOA Holiday, about forty minutes south across the Maryland line, is a useful basecamp for families combining Pennsylvania forest camping with Civil War history stops.
Things to do near Fort Loudon
The lake at Cowans Gap is the anchor activity. The 42-acre Cowans Gap Lake, one of the projects built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, supports swimming at a guarded beach, non-powered boating, and year-round fishing.
Hiking is the other main draw. There are roughly ten miles of trails in the park, with connections into Buchanan State Forest and links to the long-distance Standing Stone Trail and Tuscarora Trail. The 1.5-mile Lakeside Trail loops the water and works well for younger children.
Off-park options include the Fort Loudoun historic site, Buchanan's Birthplace State Park, and Civil War landmarks toward Chambersburg and Antietam. The park also runs guided walks and interpretive programs during the warm-weather months.

December - February
39° / 21°F 70 mmCold; limited services; ice fishing possible on the lake
Late spring through mid-fall is the practical RV season. The Cowans Gap camping area is open from mid-April until mid-December, and the guarded swim beach, boat rentals, and full campground services are keyed to the warm-weather months. Summer weekends are the busiest window, and reservations at the state park should be locked in well ahead of arrival.
Fall brings hardwood color across the ridges of Buchanan State Forest, cooler nights, and thinner crowds. It is often the strongest shoulder for RV travellers who want quiet loops and open hiking trails. Hunting seasons begin in the surrounding state forest during autumn, so wearing blaze orange on shared trails is advisable.
Winter camping options are limited. Campground Area B, some Area A sites, and the organized group tenting area close in mid-October, while cabins and the remaining campsites close later in the season. Water systems shut off in freezing weather, and the lake is used for ice fishing and ice skating when conditions allow. Private parks in the area typically run on shorter seasonal calendars.

How to book campgrounds near Fort Loudon
Sites at Area B - Cowans Gap State Park are booked through the Pennsylvania state park reservation system. Reservations can be made using the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations website or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday through Saturday, from 7:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. Reservations can be made for today and can be made up to 11 Month(s) in advance, so peak summer weekends often clear out early.
Private options, including Saunderosa Park Inc, Ye Olde Mill Campground, and Twin Bridge Meadow Family Campground, are booked directly through each campground. Hagerstown / Antietam Battlefield KOA Holiday uses the standard KOA reservation channels online or by phone.
Some sites may be available only from the campground on a first-come-first-served basis, which can help last-minute travellers midweek.
What to expect on arrival
The drive in is scenic but tight in spots. The park lies about thirty to thirty-five minutes west of Interstate 81 and Chambersburg, and the final stretch of road is winding and hilly. Larger rigs should take the grades slowly and watch for cyclists on PA 75.
Expect a wooded, shaded setting rather than open pull-through resort loops. Pennsylvania state parks do not charge an entrance fee, and heavy tree cover keeps summer temperatures comfortable but limits solar charging. Cell service is limited, allowing for a true off-the-grid experience, so it is wise to download the park map before arrival.
The large camping area has modern campsites including electric, non-electric, walk-to, pull-thru, and pet-friendly options, plus a sanitary dump station and modern restrooms with warm showers. Firewood should be purchased locally to protect against invasive pests.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Fort Loudon, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Fort Loudon, PA?
Good news: RV rental in Fort Loudon is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Allens Valley and Tuscarora Mountain region. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from around $80 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs from $250 and up. Mid-week stays and shoulder-season trips (late April or October) are where you'll spot the cheapest RV rental Fort Loudon options, with rates dropping 20-30% versus summer weekends. Pro tip: book a travel trailer with delivery included and you'll save on fuel and skip the towing learning curve, leaving more budget for kayaking on Cowans Gap Lake.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/cowans-gap-state-parkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Fort Loudon?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Fort Loudon. There is no CDL or special RV endorsement required for any motorhome or trailer available on RVezy, even the larger Class A rigs you might take up PA 75 toward Cowans Gap. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during booking, so there is no paperwork to mail in. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Grab an International Driving Permit from your home auto association before your trip and you are ready to roll into the Tuscarora Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Fort Loudon?
Every RV rental in Fort Loudon booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can hit the Lincoln Highway with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), picking the tier that fits how far you are roaming. Coverage options vary, so review the tiers at booking and pick a higher tier if you are planning long days behind the wheel near Buchanan State Forest or on winding mountain roads.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Fort Loudon RV rental?
Booking is low risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. The exact refund window depends on how far out your trip is and on the policy in place at the time of booking, which matters in the Tuscarora Mountains where the occasional winter storm or summer thunderstorm can roll through. If you need to adjust plans, you handle everything through the RVezy app or website, and customer support is there to help. Pro tip: book early to secure the best rigs for summer weekends at Cowans Gap, knowing you have flexibility if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Fort Loudon RV trip?

The surrounding 71,683-acre Buchanan State Forest is wide-open for dogs on leash too. Pro tip: bring a long lead and a collapsible water bowl, message your host in advance about any pet fee, and your pup will thank you after a swim in Allens Run.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/things-to-do/pets-in-parks.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Fort Loudon?
Yes, and it's the smartest move for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Fort Loudon and will drop your motorhome or travel trailer right at your Cowans Gap State Park site, your Buchanan State Forest reservation, or even a private cabin driveway in Fulton County. They'll level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through the systems so you can start enjoying Allens Valley instead of wrestling with a hitch. Filter for 'Delivery' on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and how far they'll travel. Pro tip: delivery fees usually scale with mileage from the host's home base, so booking a host near McConnellsburg or Chambersburg keeps costs down.

Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, propane, and the dump station, and you can text them anytime during your trip. If you're nervous about backing into a site, choose a pull-through at Cowans Gap or book delivery. Pro tip: start with a Class C or travel trailer under 25 feet, which handles the gentle mountain grades around Tuscarora Summit easily.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if my RV breaks down near Fort Loudon?
You are covered, day or night. Every motorhome rental in Fort Loudon booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with a protection plan, so a flat tire on PA 75, a dead battery at a Buchanan State Forest pull-off, or a propane issue at your Cowans Gap site is one phone call away from help. The roadside team can dispatch tire service, jump-starts, fuel delivery, towing, and lockout help across rural Franklin and Fulton Counties. Your host is also a quick text away for RV-specific questions, like resetting the generator or troubleshooting the slide-out. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and the roadside number at pickup so you have everything ready if you lose cell signal in the mountains.

Cross-border trips into Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia are no problem on RVezy bookings, just confirm with your host. Travel to Mexico isn't allowed. Realistic expectations help you budget well. Pro tip: top off in McConnellsburg before heading into the mountains, as stations thin out quickly on PA 75 north.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campground near Fort Loudon?
Plan ahead and you'll have your pick of sites. Cowans Gap State Park accepts reservations up to 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania DCNR reservation system (online at the official PA state parks site or by calling 888-PA-PARKS). For peak summer weekends, especially Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, the lakeside electric sites at Cowans Gap fill 6-9 months out. Mid-week and shoulder-season (late April-May, mid-September-October) sites are often available just 2-4 weeks ahead. Private parks like Twin Bridge Meadow and Ye Olde Mill book by phone or their own websites. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder exactly 11 months before your target date and book the moment the window opens for a lakefront Cowans Gap site.

PA 75 north into Cowans Gap winds gently through forest, no hairpin turns. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and check PennDOT's 511PA service before winter trips since snow and ice can dust the ridges from December through March. Pro tip: drive the climb up Tuscarora Mountain in daylight your first time so you can enjoy the Allens Valley overlook.

You'll feel right at home. Most rigs come with a TV, and many include Bluetooth speakers, outdoor awnings, and a generator for boondocking in Buchanan State Forest where shore power isn't available. Campervan rental Fort Loudon options are cozier but pack the same essentials. Pro tip: filter by 'sleeps' count on RVezy and read each listing's amenities list to match the rig to your group.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/cowans-gap-state-parkWhat add-ons can I get with my Fort Loudon RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common RVezy add-ons in Fort Loudon include kitchen kits (pots, dishes, utensils), bedding and linen packages, camping chairs and outdoor mats, generators (great for dry camping in Buchanan State Forest), bike racks, kayak/SUP roof carriers, portable grills, and Starlink or Wi-Fi hotspots for remote work. Pickup and dropoff usually happen at the host's home in Franklin or Fulton County, or you can pay for delivery straight to Cowans Gap. Each listing spells out fees clearly, plus the mileage policy and any generator-hour limits, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: book the kitchen and bedding kits as a bundle, it's almost always cheaper than buying piecemeal and saves you a packing headache.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/cowans-gap-state-parkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Fort Loudon through RVezy, you pay directly through the platform with a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host. Your trip total (rental rate, protection plan, fees, and taxes) is charged through RVezy at booking, and a refundable security deposit is held separately before your trip, with the amount shown on the listing. As long as you return the RV in the condition you received it and within the mileage and generator limits, the deposit is released after the trip. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, it makes any deposit questions easy to resolve in minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Fort Loudon RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, and Fort Loudon is perfectly positioned for it. Maryland is just 10 miles south, West Virginia about 60 miles, and Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Delaware are all within an easy day's drive, all fully allowed on standard RVezy bookings. Trips into Canada may be possible but require host approval and confirmation of cross-border insurance coverage before you book, so message the host directly from the listing page. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a popular long-weekend loop heads south from Fort Loudon to Harpers Ferry, then east to Washington, DC and back through Gettysburg, all within 250 miles total.
