Campgrounds near Glen Lyon
Glen Lyon sits in Newport Township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, a few miles southwest of Nanticoke and about 15 miles from Wilkes-Barre. The area is anthracite coal country on the western edge of the Wyoming Valley, with ridge-and-valley terrain, mixed hardwood forest, and easy access to the Susquehanna River. RV renters use it as a base for northeastern Pennsylvania trips that combine river recreation, state park lakes, and the western Poconos.
Camping options within a short drive range from private full-hookup resorts to a modern state-park campground. Council Cup Campground and Moyers Grove Campground sit near the Susquehanna River corridor, while Bodnarosa Campground and Whispering Pines Camping Estates offer family-oriented private sites with amenities. Frances Slocum State Park, north of the river near Wyoming, provides the closest public campground.
Most sites in the area accommodate travel trailers and Class C motorhomes. Larger Class A rigs should confirm pad length and site access at booking time, especially at wooded private parks.
Things to do near Glen Lyon
Outdoor recreation centers on lakes, trails, and the Susquehanna River. Frances Slocum State Park covers 1,035 acres with a horseshoe-shaped 165-acre lake used for boating and fishing, plus hiking and mountain-biking trails and a seasonal swimming pool with a shallow-entry area and water slides. Boat rentals are available in season, and the lake supports warm-water fish species along with a variety of birds.
Beyond the state park, day trips reach Ricketts Glen State Park for waterfall hiking, Nescopeck State Park for quieter trails, and the Susquehanna River for paddling and smallmouth-bass fishing. Wilkes-Barre and Kingston add restaurants, groceries, and a minor-league ballpark for rainy-day options.

Camping season in this part of Pennsylvania is tightly seasonal. The Frances Slocum State Park campground is open from mid-April to mid-October, and most private parks in the area follow a similar April-to-October window. Late spring through early fall is the practical booking range for RV renters.
Summer is the peak season. July and August bring warm days, active lake use, and full weekends at both public and private campgrounds. Reservations for holiday weekends, especially July Fourth and Labor Day, should be locked in early. Biting insects peak from late May through July, so screen rooms and repellent are worth packing.
September and early October are the strongest shoulder weeks. Fall foliage in the surrounding ridges typically peaks in mid-October, weekend crowds thin, and overnight lows drop into the 40s Fahrenheit. Winter camping is not offered at Frances Slocum, and most private grounds in the region winterize their hookups after late October.

This was our family’s first time renting an RV after years of tent camping, and it was a great experience overall. Michael was an excellent host. He delivered the RV to our campsite, had everything set up and ready to go, and took the time to explain how everything worked. As first-time RV renters, that made the experience stress-free and much less intimidating. The RV itself was exactly what we needed for our family of four. It was spacious enough to sleep comfortably, kept us cool during the hot weather, kept us dry through the rain, and everything worked as expected. We spent most of our time outdoors and primarily used the RV for sleeping, and it was perfect for that. The only reason I’m mentioning this is so future renters know what to expect. When we first arrived, there was a noticeable odor inside the RV. As the trip went on, it seemed to be coming from the bathroom/holding tank area. When I mentioned it to Michael at pickup, he was very open about it and explained that it’s something he has to deep clean every few rentals to eliminate the smell. I appreciated his honesty, but since it’s a known issue rather than a one-time occurrence, I think it’s fair for future renters to be aware of it. Other than that, we had a fantastic experience. Michael was friendly, responsive, and easy to work with, and I wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again

How to book campgrounds near Glen Lyon
Frances Slocum State Park reservations run through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, either online through the DCNR reservation portal or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Most Pennsylvania state-park campsites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, to noon on the day of arrival, with a noon Eastern release time for new inventory. Unreserved sites are available first-come, first-served when the park office is open.
Private campgrounds near Glen Lyon, including Council Cup Campground, Moyers Grove Campground, Bodnarosa Campground, and Whispering Pines Camping Estates, take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holiday weeks book out first. For an RV rental with a specific length or slide-out configuration, confirm pad length and hookup type before finalizing the dates.
What to expect
Sites in the area range from open, grassy private-park layouts to wooded state-park loops. Frances Slocum has a 100-site modern campground with 85 tent or trailer sites and 15 walk-in tent sites, and some sites offer 30- and 50-amp electric hookups. Facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, a sanitary dump station, and a boat launch. Pets are permitted on designated sites, and ADA-accessible sites are available.
Cell coverage is generally reliable along the valley corridor and thinner in wooded state-park sections. Firewood should be sourced locally to limit the spread of forest pests, and black bears are present in the region, so food and trash need to be secured overnight.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Glen%20Lyon%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Glen Lyon, Pennsylvania?
Great news for first-time renters: a standard, full, unrestricted driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Glen Lyon, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every motorhome and trailer on RVezy. To qualify as an RVezy approved driver, you must be at least 25 years old with a clean driving record, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform before pickup so there is no extra paperwork at the host's driveway. Most travelers are surprised how quick the process is once your booking is confirmed.

Every booking includes a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and the refund amount after that depends on how far ahead of your trip start date you cancel. If a host has to cancel on you, RVezy helps you rebook or issues a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Endless Mountains rigs for peak weekends, knowing you have built-in flexibility within the grace period.

weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Glen Lyon?
You have got this, and Glen Lyon is actually a friendly place to learn. First time renting an RV? Every RVezy host provides a walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, holding tanks, and propane, so you are never left guessing. Local roads like PA-29 and US-11 are wide and well-maintained, and the route to Frances Slocum State Park is gentle and scenic. If you are nervous about driving, request delivery and skip the wheel entirely. Stick to daytime driving for your first leg and avoid narrow downtown Wilkes-Barre streets in large Class A rigs. Pro tip: do a parking-lot practice loop with the host before pulling away so you feel the rig's turning radius.
rvezy.com/trust-and-safetyWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every motorhome rental in Glen Lyon comes with 24/7 roadside assistance through the RVezy protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you have a flat tire on I-81 or a battery issue at a campground in the Poconos. The roadside team can dispatch a tow, tire change, jump start, or lockout service to your exact location. Your host is also reachable by message through the RVezy app for quick troubleshooting on things like the water pump or slide-out. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before leaving the driveway so you never have to dig for it.

Travel into Canada may be allowed with specific host approval and additional documentation, so message the host directly before booking if Niagara or Toronto is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: confirm any cross-border plans in writing through the RVezy chat so everyone is aligned before you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Budgeting fuel for your Glen Lyon RV trip is straightforward once you know the rig. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer typically gets 10 to 14 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices generally hover around $3.20 to $3.80 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. A 200-mile round trip to Ricketts Glen and back in a Class C will likely cost roughly $60 to $90 in fuel. Sheetz and Wawa stations along Route 11 and Interstate 81 are easy to access. eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Glen Lyon?
For Pennsylvania state parks like Ricketts Glen and Frances Slocum, you can reserve campsites up to 11 months in advance through the official DCNR reservation system, and summer holiday weekends often book up within hours of opening. For private campgrounds like Moyer's Grove, 1 to 3 months ahead is usually plenty except during fall foliage peak (late September to mid-October), when 4 to 6 months is smart. Midweek nights are almost always easier to grab last minute. Pro tip: if your first-choice park is booked, check for cancellations 48 hours before arrival as Pennsylvania frees up unclaimed sites.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat are local driving conditions like around Glen Lyon?
Driving an RV around Glen Lyon is generally relaxed thanks to the rural Luzerne County setting and well-maintained state routes. US-11 and PA-29 are the main arteries and handle large rigs comfortably. Be aware of steeper grades heading north into the Endless Mountains toward Ricketts Glen, where switchbacks on PA-487 call for slow, low-gear driving. Winter brings snow from late November through March, so factor in plowing schedules and avoid mountain passes during storms. Interstate 81 traffic spikes during weekday rush hours near Wilkes-Barre, about 20 minutes northeast. Pro tip: download offline maps before leaving cell range, as coverage drops in pockets of the State Game Lands surrounding Glen Lyon.

Expect a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower; comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 people depending on layout; air conditioning and a furnace for Pennsylvania's variable weather; and seatbelts for everyone traveling in motorhomes. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth speakers, an onboard generator, and outdoor chairs. Wi-Fi varies, and some hosts include a hotspot for an add-on fee. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm linens, towels, and a starter propane tank are included so you do not double-pack.

Yes, many hosts offering campervan rental in Glen Lyon and larger motorhomes provide popular add-ons that make trips easier. Common extras include a portable generator, bike racks, kayaks or SUPs (great for Lake Frances and nearby lakes), camping chairs, outdoor grills, and kid or pet packages. Mileage policies vary by listing: some hosts include a nightly mileage allowance, others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for a flat upgrade. Pickup is usually at the host's address, but delivery and pickup-from-campground options are widely available. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you book so the host can prep everything before pickup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Glen%20Lyon%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your Glen Lyon RV rental is handled entirely through the secure RVezy platform; there is no cash exchange with the host. You pay the rental total, taxes, fees, and selected protection plan at booking with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before the trip starts, and it is released after the host confirms the RV is returned clean, undamaged, and with the agreed fuel and tank levels. To avoid issues, do a quick photo walkaround at pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: empty holding tanks before returning to skip dump fees.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Glen Lyon in winter?
Yes, winter RV camping in Glen Lyon can be a quiet, beautiful adventure if you choose a properly equipped rig. Look for listings marked as four-season or winter-ready, which include heated holding tanks, extra insulation, and a strong propane furnace to handle Luzerne County temperatures that regularly dip into the teens and 20s from December through February. Many private campgrounds reduce services in winter, but state forests, Hickory Run, and select private parks offer year-round electric sites. Pack tank heaters, a heated water hose, and an extra propane tank. Pro tip: ask your host for cold-weather operating tips during the walkthrough, especially around dumping tanks safely and avoiding freeze-ups.
