Campgrounds near Glenburn, Pennsylvania
Glenburn is a small community in Glenburn Township, Lackawanna County, about ten miles north of downtown Scranton in the Abingtons area of northeastern Pennsylvania. Its location on U.S. Route 6/11 and near Interstate 81 makes it a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Endless Mountains region, with Lackawanna State Park just a short drive north.
The area's marquee public camping destination is the 1,445-acre Lackawanna State Park, a park centered on the 198-acre Lackawanna Lake and surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails winding through forest. The campground offers wooded RV sites with electric hookups, walk-in tent sites, camping cottages and yurts within the Carpentertown loop, along with a sanitary dump station near the campground entrance and modern shower houses.
Private options round out the mix. Highland Campgrounds, Shore Forest Campground, and Shady Rest Campground provide additional RV sites in the surrounding countryside, and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park sits in the same rural corridor between Glenburn and the state park.
Things to do near Glenburn
Lackawanna State Park is the primary draw. Boating, camping, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming are popular recreation activities at Lackawanna Lake, and the park has an extensive multi-use trail network winding through mature forest. A swimming pool operates in season and is closed during the off-season, and cell service can be spotty in and around many Pennsylvania state parks, so downloading the park map before arrival is a good idea.
Beyond the park, downtown Scranton is about ten miles south and offers rainy-day options including the Steamtown National Historic Site, the Electric City Trolley Museum, and the Lackawanna Coal Mine tour. The surrounding Abingtons and Endless Mountains region supports fishing on smaller lakes, farm stands in summer, and foliage drives in fall.

The Lackawanna State Park campground opens the second Friday in April and closes October 14. The park itself is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset, so day use, ice fishing, and winter hiking remain possible even when overnight camping is unavailable. Private campgrounds in the area generally follow a similar spring-through-fall pattern, though some offer seasonal sites into late fall.
Summer weekends and holidays are the busiest period, and reservations are strongly recommended for Lackawanna State Park, especially during weekends, holidays, and the peak summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Fall brings cooler nights and strong foliage color across the Endless Mountains, typically peaking in mid-October just as the state park campground closes for the season.
Winter conditions in northeastern Pennsylvania include regular snowfall and cold snaps, so RV campers should plan for freeze protection or choose lodging alternatives during the closed season.
How to book Glenburn area campgrounds
Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival for most site types. Phone reservations are available by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday.
Campers may stay in a state park campground for up to 14 consecutive nights from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and up to 21 consecutive nights during the remainder of the year. Beginning in 2027, the Lackawanna campground is undergoing a major shower house renovation project, with portions temporarily closed in phases and impacted sites blocked from the reservation system. Private campgrounds in the area handle their own reservations directly.
What to expect at Glenburn area campgrounds
The Lackawanna State Park campground is set in mature forest with multiple loops offering varying degrees of privacy. RV sites have electric hook-ups, and modern restrooms with showers and flush toilets are provided, though sites may not be perfectly level, so leveling blocks are useful. A sanitary dump station is near the campground entrance. Pets are allowed in designated areas but must be kept on a leash and supervised.
Quiet hours are typically from 9 PM to 8 AM, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Because of the spotted lanternfly, bringing firewood into Pennsylvania is prohibited and could result in a citation, so campers should source firewood locally and burn it on site.
