Campgrounds and RV parks near Hallstead, PA

The Susquehanna River is the main draw. Paddlers use it for flatwater canoeing and kayaking, and anglers target smallmouth bass, walleye, and panfish. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission operates the Hallstead Access in Great Bend Township, which provides fishing and boating access to the Susquehanna River, with additional public access points upstream and downstream. Hiking is concentrated at Salt Springs State Park, where the towering old growth hemlock trees are estimated to be over 300 years old and the rocky gorge cut by Fall Brook has three waterfalls. The Fall Brook Natural Area is part of the Old-Growth Forest Network. Families often combine a trail day there with an afternoon at a campground pool or lake. Binghamton, New York, is a short drive north for groceries, restaurants, a zoo, and rainy-day museums.

Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. Most private campgrounds in the area, including options such as Lakeside Campground and Pine Crest Campground, run seasonal operations from roughly mid-April through October and shut water and dump stations before hard freezes. Shore Forest Campground, for example, operates from mid-April through October with full hookups for RVs. Amenities like pools and lake beaches typically open by Memorial Day weekend. Summer is peak. July and August bring warm days, active river paddling, and full weekends at family campgrounds. Book early for holiday weekends, especially July 4 and Labor Day. September and early October are quieter, with cooler nights, fall color across the Endless Mountains, and easier site availability. Winter camping options are limited. Salt Springs State Park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset, but overnight facilities and most private RV parks close or restrict services once temperatures drop. Hunting seasons run through late fall, so campers should check Pennsylvania Game Commission dates before visiting wooded areas.

Expect a rural setting. Roads into campgrounds are often narrow two-lane county routes with hills and tight turns, so drivers of larger Class A rigs should map the final approach before arriving. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks, and coverage is inconsistent once off the main highways along Interstate 81 and US Route 11. Sites vary widely. Some parks offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, while others, including Salt Springs, are primitive. Campers should bring their own drinking water; water is available outside at the Wheaton House, but the well water has a sulfurous taste and is currently posted as nonpotable. Firewood is usually sold on-site, and campers are asked not to bring firewood from outside the county, since exotic pests are spread when infested firewood is transported to new areas. Black bears, deer, and ticks are present. Store food securely and check for ticks after hiking.
