Campgrounds near Highland Park, Pennsylvania
Highland Park sits in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, in the Juniata River Valley of the state's ridge-and-valley region. The area is bracketed by long parallel Appalachian ridges and public forestland, with Lewistown as the nearest full-service town and State College roughly an hour north. RV travelers use it as a base for river recreation on the Juniata and for hiking and fishing in the surrounding state parks and forests.
Campground options range from full-hookup family parks to a compact state-park loop. Waterside Campground and RV Park in Lewistown sits along the Juniata River, minutes from local attractions and shops, and accommodates everything from tents to Class-A motorhomes. Seven Mountains Campground in Spring Mills offers RV sites, cabins, and tent sites with 30 and 50-amp service and room for larger rigs. Buttonwood Campground provides family camping with a large site count in the Juniata River Valley.
For a quieter state-park stay, Greenwood Furnace State Park covers roughly 423 acres, including a six-acre lake, campground, hiking trails, and a historic iron-furnace district, with access to backpacking, hiking, mountain biking, hunting, and fishing in the surrounding state forest. Hartman Center Campground rounds out the local options for group and traditional camping.
Things to do in Highland Park
Water recreation drives most trips. The Juniata River supports tubing, kayaking, canoeing, and smallmouth bass fishing, and area campgrounds add heated pools, canoe and kayak rentals, and catch-and-release ponds. Waterside Campground and RV Park sits near two waterways just minutes from the shops and restaurants of Lewistown.
Hiking and mountain biking are the other draw. Rothrock and Bald Eagle State Forests wrap the region with hundreds of miles of trail, and Seven Mountains Campground works well as a basecamp for both. Greenwood Lake inside Greenwood Furnace State Park is stocked with trout and allows ice fishing during winter, and the park also has a sand-beach swim area and a walkable historic district.
Families gravitate to Buttonwood Campground, where a jumping pillow, pedal carts, mini-golf, an arcade, and a gem mine keep younger campers busy alongside canoe and kayak options on the Juniata.

The camping season in this part of central Pennsylvania is shaped by the state-park calendar. At Greenwood Furnace State Park, the tent and trailer campground is typically open from mid-April through mid-November, and most sites have electric hook-ups. Most private parks in the Juniata Valley follow a similar arc, opening in April and closing in late October, with a handful of parks running longer.
Summer weekends are the busiest window, and demand tightens further whenever Penn State home football weekends land on the calendar. Centre County lodging fills for those weekends, so it pays to check the schedule and reserve well ahead if a stay overlaps one, along with hunting season and fall foliage. Fall color in the ridges typically peaks in mid-October.
Winter narrows the options sharply. Seven Mountains Campground stays open year-round, which makes it a genuine winter option in a region where many campgrounds close, and nearby Tussey Mountain adds skiing and snowboarding to the trip mix. Expect snow, ice, and limited services at state parks during the off-season.
How to book Highland Park campgrounds
State-park sites and private campgrounds use different systems in Pennsylvania. Greenwood Furnace State Park is reserved through the Pennsylvania DCNR reservation system, which accepts bookings up to eleven months ahead. The maximum stay is 14 nights during the summer season and 21 nights during the off season, and campers must vacate the park for 48 hours between stays. Popular weekends fill early, especially holidays and foliage weekends.
Private parks book directly. Waterside Campground and RV Park, Buttonwood Campground, and Seven Mountains Campground all take reservations by phone or through their websites. For summer weekends and any football weekend within reach of State College, plan to reserve two to three months in advance for a specific site type, and earlier for pull-throughs sized for larger rigs.
What to expect at Highland Park campgrounds
Hookups and amenities vary by park type. Waterside Campground and RV Park offers 30 and 50-amp full-hookup sites with fire rings and picnic tables, and Buttonwood Campground provides 30 and 50-amp electrical service, water, sewer, and cable connections with pull-through sites for big rigs, plus a pool, dump station, propane service, and a general store. State-park sites are simpler, with electric-only hookups, a central shower house, and a dump station near the entrance.
Expect ridge-and-valley terrain, tree cover at most sites, and mixed cell coverage. Greenwood Furnace has little to no phone service, which suits campers looking to disconnect but matters for anyone needing to work remotely. Trains run through the Juniata River corridor, so riverside sites can be noisy at night. Black bears live in the surrounding forests, so food should be stored inside the RV or in a hard-sided container.

pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Highland Park, PA?
Pittsburgh driving has personality, but it is very manageable in an RV with a little planning. Highland Park itself is quiet and residential, but the surrounding city has steep hills, narrow bridges, and tunnels with height restrictions, the Fort Pitt and Squirrel Hill tunnels both clear well over 13 feet, so almost all rentals fit fine. Avoid Liberty Tunnel during rush hour (7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM) when traffic backs up. Once you are on PA-28, I-376, or the PA Turnpike heading east, driving is smooth and scenic. Winter can bring snow and ice from December through February. Pro tip: ask your host about RV delivery in Highland Park to skip city driving entirely your first day.

Pro tip: return your RV rental in Highland Park clean, with tanks emptied and fuel topped off, that is the single best way to get your full deposit back fast.
