Campgrounds near Hilldale, Pennsylvania
Hilldale sits in Luzerne County in northeastern Pennsylvania, just west of Wilkes-Barre and within an easy drive of several state park campgrounds and private RV parks. The surrounding landscape is a mix of forested ridges, lakes, and river gorges on the western edge of the Pocono Mountains, giving RV renters a range of scenery within a short drive of the city.
The closest option is Frances Slocum State Park, about ten miles north, which offers electric and non-electric sites around a horseshoe-shaped, 165-acre lake. Lackawanna State Park sits to the north near Scranton, while Hickory Run State Park lies southeast in the Pocono foothills and covers nearly 16,000 acres. Highland Campgrounds and Lehigh Gorge Campground provide private alternatives with more RV-focused amenities.
Most state park sites accommodate RVs up to around 35 to 40 feet, with electric hookups common at the public parks and full hookups available at Hickory Run and the private campgrounds. Public sites are handled through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and private parks are booked directly through each operator.
Things to do near Hilldale
Water recreation is the main draw. Frances Slocum State Park centers on a 165-acre lake with fishing, non-powered boating, hiking trails, and a swimming pool open to registered campers in season. Lackawanna State Park has a lake with boat rentals, mountain biking, and lakeside trails, and its no-gas-motor rule keeps things quiet for paddlers.
Hickory Run State Park is worth the drive for its Boulder Field, a National Natural Landmark, plus more than 40 miles of hiking trails, trout-stocked streams, and a swimming beach at Sand Spring Lake. Nearby Lehigh Gorge State Park adds whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River and a long crushed-stone rail-trail popular for biking. Guests at Lehigh Gorge Campground and Highland Campgrounds can use on-site amenities between day trips into the surrounding parks.

The Pennsylvania state park campgrounds in this area operate on a defined season. Frances Slocum, Lackawanna, and the modern loops at Hickory Run all open in mid-April and close in mid-October, so water-dependent facilities like dump stations and shower houses follow the same window. Early and late shoulder trips need self-contained rigs.
Summer weekends fill quickly at the state parks, particularly at Frances Slocum and Hickory Run, so booking weeks or months ahead is standard. Fall brings cooler nights, foliage color across the Pocono foothills, and easier midweek availability, though October weekends are heavily booked for leaf-peeping. Private options like Highland Campgrounds and Lehigh Gorge Campground often run longer seasons than the state parks, extending the shoulder-season window for RV renters.
Winter camping is limited. Select rustic sites and cottages at Hickory Run remain open through the end of deer season in December, and the park itself stays open year round for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing where conditions allow.

How to book campgrounds near Hilldale
State park sites at Frances Slocum, Lackawanna, and Hickory Run are reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations system, either online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance, with the release opening at noon Eastern Time, and reservations remain available up to noon on the day of arrival. Some site types, such as organized group tenting and cottages, require a minimum three-day advance booking.
For summer weekends and October foliage weekends, plan to reserve several months out, especially for electric sites and lakeside loops. Weekday and shoulder-season stays are far easier to secure.
Highland Campgrounds and Lehigh Gorge Campground are private operators and take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Full-hookup sites at these parks tend to book earliest for holiday weekends, so confirm rig length and hookup type when reserving.
What to expect on arrival
At the Pennsylvania state parks, campers with reservations check in at the park office or contact station near the campground entrance. Sites include a picnic table and fire ring, and modern loops have flush toilets, warm showers, and a sanitary dump station. Pets are allowed only on designated pet-friendly sites, so confirm the pet policy when booking.
Alcohol is prohibited in all Pennsylvania state parks, and quiet hours run overnight, so late arrivals should plan a low-key setup. This is black bear country, so food, coolers, and toiletries need to be stored inside the RV or in bear-resistant containers, and garbage goes in the designated bins.
Cell service is inconsistent across many park loops, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hilldale, PA?
RV rental in Hilldale is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Pocono Mountains and northeastern Pennsylvania. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A motorhomes run $250 to $400 per night. Pricing depends on the season, the RV's age, and included extras like generators or bedding. For a cheap RV rental in Hilldale, book midweek or during the shoulder seasons of late April or September, when nightly rates often drop 15 to 25 percent. Pro tip: use RVezy filters to sort by price and look for hosts offering generous free miles or unlimited mileage to keep your total trip cost predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hilldale%2C%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Hilldale, Pennsylvania?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular Class C Pennsylvania driver's license (the everyday license you already have) is all you need to drive virtually every RV available on RVezy in Hilldale. Pennsylvania only requires a non-commercial Class B license for single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and almost all rental motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers fall well below that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and we verify your ID right through the platform during checkout, so there's no paperwork to mail in. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set to roll.
dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/Non-Commercial-Drivers-License.aspxWhat protection and roadside assistance are included with my RVezy booking?
You're covered from the moment you hit the road. Every RV rental in Hilldale booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan that covers most damages to the vehicle, plus 24/7 roadside assistance for flat tires, lockouts, towing, and battery jumps. During checkout you'll choose from several protection plan tiers, so you can pick the level of coverage that fits your comfort level, whether you're heading out for a short weekend at Ricketts Glen or a longer Pocono Mountains loop. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before pickup so help is one tap away if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking your Hilldale RV trip is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, not the host, and there is a money-back grace period right after booking so you have time to confirm dates, lock in campgrounds, and coordinate the rest of your trip. Beyond that window, refund amounts depend on how far out you cancel. You'll see the full cancellation terms displayed clearly during checkout before you confirm your booking. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Pocono-region rigs for summer and fall foliage weekends, knowing you have flexibility built into your reservation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Hilldale?
Absolutely, your dog is welcome on the adventure. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Hilldale, and you can find them in seconds by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. From there, message the host to confirm pet fees, size limits, or any breed notes. Once you're rolling, you'll find loads of dog-friendly options nearby: Frances Slocum State Park in Wyoming, PA allows leashed pets on most trails and in designated campsites, Ricketts Glen State Park has pet-friendly loops, and Seven Tubs Nature Area in Plains Township is a quick local favorite for a morning hike. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, the Pocono summers can get warm and humid.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/frances-slocum-state-park.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in the Hilldale area?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts in the Hilldale and greater Wilkes-Barre area offer RV delivery, meaning they'll drive the rig to your driveway, a local campground, or a festival site, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Just use the Delivery filter when you search, then message the host with your destination so they can quote a delivery fee (usually based on mileage). Popular drop-off spots include Moon Lake Recreation Area, Frances Slocum State Park, and Council Cup Campground in Wapwallopen. Pro tip: delivery is the secret weapon for first-time renters who'd rather skip driving a big rig through downtown Wilkes-Barre.
visitluzernecounty.com/174/CampingHow many miles are included, and how far can I realistically travel?
You've got plenty of road to roam. Most Hilldale RV hosts include between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and some advertise RV rentals with unlimited mileage, perfect if you're planning a multi-state loop. Additional miles typically run $0.30 to $0.50 each, clearly listed on every listing page. From Hilldale, you can comfortably reach Ricketts Glen State Park (about 35 miles), the Lehigh Gorge area near Jim Thorpe (about 45 miles), the Delaware Water Gap (about 60 miles), Knoebels Amusement Resort (about 65 miles), and Watkins Glen, NY (about 130 miles) without burning through a giant mileage budget. Pro tip: estimate your route mileage in Google Maps before booking, then filter for hosts whose included miles cover your plan.

You're surrounded by excellent options. Some of the best campgrounds near Hilldale include Frances Slocum State Park in Wyoming (about 10 miles north, with 91 electric sites and lake views), Moon Lake Recreation Area in Hunlock Creek (rustic, peaceful, great for boondocking-style stays), Ricketts Glen State Park near Benton (120 sites and 22 named waterfalls), Council Cup Campground in Wapwallopen (full hookups along the Susquehanna), and Hickory Run State Park near White Haven (381 sites and the famous Boulder Field). State park sites typically offer 30-amp electric and a dump station. Pro tip: book Pennsylvania state parks through the official reservation system up to 11 months in advance for prime summer weekends.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ricketts-glen-state-park.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Hilldale?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot for a Hilldale RV trip. May through early October delivers comfortable daytime highs of 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, with cool nights perfect for a campfire. Late September and early October are the real magic window, when the Pocono and Endless Mountains explode into red and gold foliage, and rates often soften compared to peak July and August. Summer (June through August) is ideal for swimming at Lake Jean or Frances Slocum Lake, while April and November bring crisp shoulder-season camping at most state parks before they close non-essential loops for winter. Pro tip: book leaf-peeping weekends by mid-August, foliage travelers fill up Pocono campgrounds fast.
weather.gov/bgm/I've never rented an RV before. How does the pickup and orientation work?
You're in good hands, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, typically 30 to 60 minutes, where they show you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water pump, propane, fridge, heating and AC, and dump valves. Don't be shy about asking them to repeat anything, that's exactly what the orientation is for. You can also message the host before booking with any questions, and many hosts in Hilldale send a personalized video tour ahead of pickup. Pro tip: take your own short phone videos during the walkthrough so you can replay them later at your campsite when you're hooking up at Frances Slocum or Ricketts Glen.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/things-to-do/camping.htmlWhat happens if I have a breakdown or roadside emergency?
Help is one phone call away, 24/7. Every RVezy booking in Hilldale includes round-the-clock roadside assistance for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and fuel delivery, so if something goes sideways on Interstate 81 or a back road near Ricketts Glen, you're not stranded. Your first step is always to pull over safely, call the roadside number provided in your booking confirmation, and then message your host so they're in the loop. For mechanical issues unrelated to driver error, the host coordinates repairs or a swap. Pro tip: before leaving Hilldale, snap a photo of the RV's tire pressure sticker and propane tank location so you can describe things quickly if you need to call for help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hilldale RV rental into New York, New Jersey, or across the Canadian border?
Cross-state RV road trips from Hilldale are wide open. You're free to travel across Pennsylvania and into neighboring states like New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia on any RVezy booking, and popular routes include the Finger Lakes (about 3 hours), the Catskills (about 2.5 hours), and the Jersey Shore (about 3 hours). Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection package, so message the host directly to confirm before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a Hilldale-to-Niagara Falls round trip is a popular long-weekend RV road trip, about 4.5 hours each way.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how much will gas cost?
Budgeting fuel for your Hilldale RV trip is easier than you'd think. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes around 10 to 14 MPG, Class A motorhomes about 7 to 10 MPG, and trucks pulling travel trailers typically 10 to 14 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area generally run close to the state average (around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon for regular as of 2026), with diesel slightly higher. A weekend round-trip to Ricketts Glen in a Class C will use roughly 7 to 9 gallons. Pro tip: fill up in Hilldale or along Route 309 before heading into the Poconos, prices climb at small mountain-town stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hilldale?
Booking early is the move, especially for Pennsylvania state parks. Reservations at parks like Frances Slocum, Ricketts Glen, Hickory Run, and Tobyhanna open up to 11 months in advance through the official PA State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day) fill within hours of opening. Private campgrounds like Council Cup or Pine Cove Beach Club typically book 1 to 3 months ahead for peak weekends. For shoulder-season camping in May or late September, you can often snag a great site 2 to 4 weeks out. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, search Sunday-through-Thursday stays, midweek availability near Hilldale is dramatically better and often cheaper too.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks.htmlWhat are the local driving conditions like around Hilldale and the Poconos?
Driving an RV around Hilldale is approachable, even for first-timers. The area sits along Interstate 81 and Route 315, both wide, RV-friendly highways with easy shoulders. Heading into the Pocono Mountains you'll encounter rolling grades and a few sharper curves on routes like PA-118 toward Ricketts Glen, but nothing that requires special skills, just steady speeds and downshifting on descents. Winter (December to March) can bring snow and ice, so most RV trips run April through November. Watch for low bridges near downtown Wilkes-Barre, and avoid narrow scenic roads like Seven Tubs access road in larger Class A motorhomes. Pro tip: download an RV-specific GPS app like RV Trip Wizard to auto-route you around low clearances in northeastern PA.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat hookups and amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Hilldale?
You'll find a good mix to suit any setup. Pennsylvania state parks near Hilldale, like Frances Slocum and Ricketts Glen, offer mostly 30-amp electric sites with a central water spigot and a free dump station near the entrance, but typically no individual sewer hookups. Private campgrounds such as Council Cup Campground (Wapwallopen) and Endless Mountains Hideaway offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer) plus Wi-Fi at many sites. Fresh water fill stations and dump stations are easy to find along your route. Pro tip: bring a 30-amp to 50-amp dogbone adapter and a 25-foot drinking-water hose, those two items unlock 95 percent of campgrounds around the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area regardless of your rig's setup.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/frances-slocum-state-park.htmlWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Hilldale?
You'll be amazed how complete most rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Hilldale comes with a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink, basic cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 4 to 8 people with real mattresses, climate control via roof AC and propane furnace, a dinette, and seatbelts for travel. Most Class C and Class A rigs include a generator for off-grid power, and many hosts also throw in a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor camp chairs. Wi-Fi is usually BYO via your phone hotspot, since cell service in the Pocono Mountains can be spotty. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities list closely, some Hilldale hosts include bedding, towels, and a starter kit of paper goods at no extra cost.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/things-to-do/camping.htmlWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when renting an RV in Hilldale?
You can customize your motorhome rental in Hilldale to fit your trip perfectly. Popular host add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generator hours (often $3 to $5 per hour beyond a daily allowance), bike racks, portable propane fire pits (a must, since many PA state parks restrict open ground fires during dry spells), and even kayaks or e-bikes. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Hilldale, with delivery available from many hosts for an added fee. Mileage policies are spelled out clearly on every listing, typically 100 to 150 free miles per night with reasonable overage rates. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen package if you're flying into Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport (AVP), it turns your trip into a true grab-and-go vacation.
flyavp.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Hilldale, RVezy charges your credit card for the rental total through the platform, with no cash or personal transfers to the host. A refundable security deposit, separate from your booking payment and typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig, is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good condition. To avoid deposit issues, do a careful pre-trip and post-trip photo walkaround with your host, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and empty the holding tanks at a dump station before drop-off. Pro tip: use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees if you're visiting from Canada.
