Campgrounds near Kingston
Kingston sits in Luzerne County along the Susquehanna River, across from Wilkes-Barre in northeastern Pennsylvania. The area is a practical staging point for RV trips into the Endless Mountains, the Pocono Mountains, and the Lehigh Gorge, with several private campgrounds and a state park within a short drive.
Frances Slocum State Park, the closest public option, covers 1,035 acres in Luzerne County and centers on a horseshoe-shaped 165-acre lake used for boating and fishing. Private options west and south of the city include Council Cup Campground in Wapwallopen, which offers over 100 sites across 400 acres of scenic woodland, plus Moyers Grove Campground nearby in a 70-acre creekside setting.
For trips oriented toward the Poconos and the Lehigh River, Lehigh Gorge Campground in White Haven is roughly a 40-minute drive south. North of Kingston, Highland Campgrounds in Dalton puts RV renters within reach of Lackawanna State Park and the Scranton area. Together, these sites cover state-park camping, full-hookup family RV parks, and rustic wooded stays.
Things to do near Kingston
Water recreation is the main draw. Frances Slocum Lake supports boating and fishing, with canoe and kayak rentals available, and the park adds hiking and mountain biking trails plus a large day-use area for picnics. A swimming pool operates during summer with lifeguards on duty, useful when the lake is off-limits for swimming.
South of Kingston, the Lehigh Gorge corridor offers whitewater rafting, biking on the rail-trail, and river fishing. Visitors staying at Lehigh Gorge Campground can reach Lehigh Gorge State Park and Hickory Run State Park for hiking, biking, and paddling.
Families looking for on-site amenities can pick a private park. Moyers Grove has an in-ground pool, a fishing pond, and mini-golf. Council Cup adds hiking trails, Susquehanna River overlooks, a stocked trout stream, and a 25-foot waterfall with a swimming hole at its base.

The camping calendar is shaped by Pennsylvania's northern climate. Frances Slocum State Park's campground opens in mid-April and closes in mid-October, which matches most public campgrounds in the region. Highland Campgrounds runs a similar season, and Council Cup Campground operates from April through November. Moyers Grove keeps a comparable spring-to-fall calendar.
Late spring brings reliable weather and rising river flows suitable for paddling. Summer is peak season: warm days, active pool and event schedules at family parks, and heaviest reservation demand around the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends. Bookings for popular loops fill months in advance.
Fall delivers cool nights, foliage color through the Endless Mountains, and themed weekends at several private campgrounds. Winter access at Frances Slocum State Park includes ice skating, sledding, and cross-country skiing when conditions allow, but modern RV camping is limited once state-park loops close for the season.

This was our family’s first time renting an RV after years of tent camping, and it was a great experience overall. Michael was an excellent host. He delivered the RV to our campsite, had everything set up and ready to go, and took the time to explain how everything worked. As first-time RV renters, that made the experience stress-free and much less intimidating. The RV itself was exactly what we needed for our family of four. It was spacious enough to sleep comfortably, kept us cool during the hot weather, kept us dry through the rain, and everything worked as expected. We spent most of our time outdoors and primarily used the RV for sleeping, and it was perfect for that. The only reason I’m mentioning this is so future renters know what to expect. When we first arrived, there was a noticeable odor inside the RV. As the trip went on, it seemed to be coming from the bathroom/holding tank area. When I mentioned it to Michael at pickup, he was very open about it and explained that it’s something he has to deep clean every few rentals to eliminate the smell. I appreciated his honesty, but since it’s a known issue rather than a one-time occurrence, I think it’s fair for future renters to be aware of it. Other than that, we had a fantastic experience. Michael was friendly, responsive, and easy to work with, and I wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again

How to book a campsite near Kingston
Public and private sites use different systems. Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks, including Frances Slocum, can be reserved up to 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival. Online reservations for day-use and overnight facilities can be made through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation site, or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday.
Private campgrounds are booked directly. Lehigh Gorge Campground, Highland Campgrounds, Moyers Grove, and Council Cup each take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Payment policies vary, so confirm accepted methods and cancellation windows when booking.
For summer weekends and holiday periods, reserve as early as possible. Groups should ask about dedicated group tenting sites, which typically require longer lead times.
What to expect
Terrain is wooded and hilly. Sites are shaded, roads are often gravel, and some private parks have tight interior lanes, so RV renters with larger rigs should confirm site length and access. Moyers Grove accommodates campers up to 40 feet on its sites, and its covered entry bridge clears trailers up to 14 feet 2 inches in height.
Amenities differ by park. Frances Slocum has tent and trailer sites, ADA-accessible sites, some with electric hookups, plus 15 walk-in tent sites, flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a sanitary dump station, and a nearby boat launch. Private parks typically add pools, camp stores, laundry, and organized weekend activities.
Cell service can be spotty. Moyers Grove notes that Verizon, AT&T, and Straight Talk are the only carriers that work on-site, and there is no cable or Wi-Fi. Plan for limited connectivity in wooded areas.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Kingston, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Kingston, PA?
RV rental in Kingston, PA is often more affordable than big commercial outlets because you book directly from local owners. Travel trailers typically run $75 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A rigs go from $200 to $350 per night. You'll save the most by booking midweek or in the shoulder months of late April, May, September, and October when peak Pocono summer pricing eases. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book listings and bundle a delivery option, since many Kingston-area hosts offer flat-rate delivery to nearby parks like Frances Slocum, which can be cheaper than fuel for a round-trip pickup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kingston%2C%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Kingston, Pennsylvania?
Good news: for almost every RV you'll rent in Kingston, your regular Class C Pennsylvania driver's license (or any standard state-issued license) is all you need. PennDOT only requires a Non-Commercial Class B license for single vehicles over 26,001 pounds, which excludes virtually every campervan, travel trailer, Class C, and most Class A motorhomes on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and ID verification happens right in the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick and painless the process really is.
pa.gov/agencies/penndot/driver-vehicle-services/driver-licensingWhat's included to protect me during my Kingston RV trip?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Kingston, PA on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Route 309 or a dead battery at Ricketts Glen won't derail your trip. During checkout you choose your protection level, which covers most physical damage to the vehicle for added financial peace of mind. Roadside help includes towing, jump starts, lockout service, and tire changes. Pro tip: snap a quick walkaround video at pickup so any pre-existing scuffs are documented and you can relax into your trip.

Booking your Kingston RV trip is low-risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book, plus protections for situations outside your control like severe winter storms in the Wyoming Valley or tropical storm remnants pushing through northeastern PA. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel, with more flexibility the earlier you let us know. Pro tip: if a nor'easter is in the forecast a few days out, reach out to RVezy support early and the team will walk you through your options.

Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Kingston is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see dozens of nearby listings whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) for a small cleaning fee. Pennsylvania state parks like Frances Slocum and Ricketts Glen have pet-friendly camping loops, and the trails around Seven Tubs Nature Area just outside Wilkes-Barre are leash-friendly with shaded creek crossings dogs love. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm size and breed preferences, then ask about a tie-out spot at the campsite. Bring a towel for muddy paws after a hike to Nay Aug Falls in nearby Scranton.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Kingston?
Yes, RV delivery in Kingston is one of the most popular options, and it's perfect for first-time renters who'd rather skip driving a big rig through the Wyoming Valley. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer at nearby campgrounds like Moyer's Grove in Wapwallopen, Council Cup Campground in Wapwallopen, or Frances Slocum State Park in Dallas, about 15 minutes northwest. They'll level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $4 per mile each way. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a generator add-on if your campsite has no electric hookup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kingston%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow far can I drive on a Kingston RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?

You're surrounded by some of Pennsylvania's best RV camping. Book state park sites at visitPAparks.com up to 11 months ahead. Pro tip: weekday nights at Frances Slocum almost always have last-minute availability, even in July.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parksWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Kingston, PA?
Kingston's sweet spot for RV camping is late May through mid-October, with each season offering something special. June through August brings warm days of 75 to 85°F, perfect for swimming at Lake Jean. Late September through October explodes into world-class fall foliage across the Endless Mountains, with crisp 50 to 65°F days that are ideal for hiking. May and early June are quieter with fewer bugs. Winter RVing is possible too: many hosts list four-season rigs with heated tanks for ski trips to Montage Mountain or Camelback. Pro tip: book your fall foliage week, typically the second or third week of October here, by early summer because Pocono campgrounds fill fast.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before, what should I know for my Kingston rental?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a thorough walkthrough at pickup covering generator, slides, tanks, propane, and driving tips specific to their rig, and they're a text away during your trip. Kingston is a great launchpad for beginners because you can stick to wider roads like Route 309 north toward Dallas or I-81 toward Scranton, avoiding tight historic streets in places like Jim Thorpe until you're comfortable. Choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet for the easiest first experience. Pro tip: ask your host about delivery to your first campground so you can pick up driving confidence after a relaxing first night parked and set up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road near Kingston?
You're never alone out there. Every RV rental in Kingston, PA on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering tows, jump starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery. If a slide-out sticks at Frances Slocum or the fridge stops cooling halfway to Ricketts Glen, message your host first (they know their rig best) or contact RVezy support around the clock. Cell coverage is strong on I-81 and Route 309 around Kingston, with occasional dead zones deep in the Endless Mountains. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps for the Pocono backroads and save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Kingston RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
You've got a lot of freedom on an RV road trip from Kingston. Interstate travel within the US is allowed on virtually every RVezy booking, so popular runs to New York's Catskills (about 2 hours northeast), New Jersey's Cape May (about 3.5 hours southeast), Vermont's Green Mountains (about 5.5 hours), or Washington DC (about 4 hours south) are all fair game. Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the host and their insurance, so message before booking if you're eyeing Niagara Falls or Montreal. Travel into Mexico is not permitted because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: bring your RVezy booking confirmation, the RV registration, and a valid passport for any Canadian border crossing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for in Kingston?
Budgeting is straightforward once you know the numbers. Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, Class A rigs 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG combined). Pennsylvania gas prices typically run about 20 to 30 cents above the national average due to state fuel taxes, so a round trip from Kingston to Ricketts Glen and back (about 60 miles) might cost $20 to $30 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at the Sheetz or Wawa on Pierce Street in Kingston before heading north, prices drop noticeably outside Luzerne County toward Tunkhannock.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Kingston?
For the best sites, plan ahead but know there's flexibility too. Pennsylvania state parks like Ricketts Glen, Frances Slocum, and Hickory Run open reservations 11 months in advance through visitPAparks.com or 888-PA-PARKS, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day) often book within hours of opening. Private parks like Council Cup or Moyer's Grove typically have more last-minute availability. For fall foliage trips in October, book by July. Weekday stays Sunday through Thursday usually have openings even in peak season. Pro tip: if your dream weekend is taken, check the reservation system at 7 a.m. exactly 11 months out, cancellations get released into inventory in real time.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat are driving conditions like around Kingston for a motorhome rental?
Driving a motorhome rental in Kingston is more manageable than you might think. The Wyoming Valley is laid out around I-81 and the cross-valley expressway (Route 309), both of which are wide, modern, and RV-friendly. Watch for the steep grade on the Wilkes-Barre Mountain section of I-81 southbound (about a 6% downhill) where the truck runaway ramp lives, downshift early. Winter brings lake-effect snow squalls from late November through March, especially around the Pocono Plateau, so check 511PA before heading out. Avoid tight downtown Wilkes-Barre streets and the narrow historic district in Jim Thorpe with anything over 26 feet. Pro tip: the Back Mountain area via Route 309 north is the smoothest, prettiest route to Frances Slocum and Ricketts Glen.
511pa.com/What hookups and dump stations are available at campgrounds near Kingston?
You'll find a healthy mix of options for RV camping near Kingston. Full-hookup sites (water, electric 30/50 amp, and sewer) are available at Council Cup Campground, Moyer's Grove RV Resort, and a growing number of Pennsylvania state parks including Frances Slocum's newer loop. Most state parks offer electric and water at the site plus a centralized dump station, which costs $10 to $15 to use. Potable water fill-ups are typically free for registered campers. Cell-boosted Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the Endless Mountains, so don't count on streaming at Ricketts Glen. Pro tip: dump your tanks before leaving the campground, the closest public dump station on I-81 north is at the Hickory Run service plaza.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat features and amenities should I expect inside a Kingston RV rental?
Modern comfort is the norm. A typical motorhome rental in Kingston includes a queen or king bed, a kitchenette with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for 4 to 8. Larger Class C and Class A rigs add slide-outs, TVs, and onboard generators (great for boondocking near Ricketts Glen). Campervan rental in Kingston is also popular for couples wanting easier maneuverability through the Poconos. Most hosts include kitchen basics, bedding, and outdoor chairs. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities tab and message the host to confirm anything specific you need before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kingston%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Kingston?
Hosts in Kingston offer a flexible menu of extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons include bike racks ($25 to $50 per trip), camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30), generators ($30 to $50 per day), propane refills ($25 to $40), linens and kitchen kits ($25 to $75), and unlimited mileage upgrades. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Kingston, Wilkes-Barre, or surrounding towns like Forty Fort, Dallas, and Plains, with the orientation walkthrough taking 30 to 60 minutes. Drop-off is the same location unless you've arranged delivery. Pro tip: request a bike rack if you're heading to the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail or the D&L Trail near Jim Thorpe, both perfect for an easy ride after a day's drive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kingston%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy rental in Kingston?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Kingston, PA, you pay through RVezy's protected checkout using a credit card, no cash is ever exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card before your trip and released after drop-off, assuming no damage or extra cleaning. Mileage overages, propane refills, or late-return fees, if any, are settled through the platform after the trip. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround video with the host at both pickup and drop-off so the deposit returns to your card quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV camping really possible near Kingston, PA?
Yes, and it's a hidden gem of an experience. Winter RV camping near Kingston means waking up to snow-dusted hemlocks at Ricketts Glen (the ice climbing on the frozen falls is legendary) or being just 25 minutes from skiing at Montage Mountain in Moosic and 45 minutes from Camelback in Tannersville. Look for RVezy listings tagged with heated tanks, four-season insulation, and shore-power capability, with January lows around 19°F you'll want them. Some private parks like Council Cup stay open year-round with electric hookups. Pro tip: ask the host to demo the propane furnace and tank heaters during your walkthrough, and travel with extra propane, you'll burn through it faster than expected on a 20°F night.
