Campgrounds and RV parks near Laflin, PA

Water recreation drives most trips. Frances Slocum Lake supports boating and fishing from a boat launch inside the park. At Lackawanna State Park, no gas motors are allowed on the water, which keeps things noticeably quieter out on the lake, a plus for paddlers and young anglers. Hiking and sightseeing are strong across the region. Hickory Run has over 40 miles of trails, and Boulder Field, a striking boulder-strewn area, is a National Natural Landmark. Nearby Lehigh Gorge State Park adds rail-trail biking and whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River. At Lackawanna, hunters, hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers share 15 miles of multiuse trails throughout the park, giving groups room to spread out even on busy weekends.

Pennsylvania state park campgrounds in this region run a defined season. The campground at Frances Slocum is available from mid-April to mid-October, and Lackawanna opens mid-April and closes mid-October, with a maximum camping period of 14 consecutive days in the summer season and 21 consecutive days in the off-season. Hickory Run stretches longer: the campground is open mid-April through mid-October, with select rustic campsites and cottages remaining open to the end of deer season in December. Summer is peak. Weekends in July and August fill fastest at the state parks, and the park experiences high visitation from spring through fall, and parking areas at trailheads may reach capacity early in the day, even during the week. Fall brings cooler nights, foliage from late September into mid-October, and easier last-minute bookings after Labor Day. Winter access is limited for RV travelers. Most private campgrounds close for the season, and state park campgrounds shut water-dependent facilities once temperatures drop. Late spring reopenings can be cold and wet, so trip planners should watch overnight lows through May.

State park campgrounds in this area are modern but rustic. Frances Slocum has 85 tent or trailer sites, some ADA accessible and some with electric hookups, plus 15 walk-in tent sites for added privacy. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, pets are permitted on designated sites, and flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a sanitary dump station, and a boat launch are available. Lackawanna features forested sites with electric hook-ups and walk-in tent sites, with shower houses providing warm showers and flush toilets, a sanitary dump station near the campground entrance, and Fox Run and Maple Lane loops allowing pets on designated sites. Private parks lean toward full-service, typically offering pull-through RV sites with water, electric, and sewer, along with bathhouses and a camp store. Come prepared for bears: black bears are common in Hickory Run State Park and can be dangerous, so campers should take advantage of the campground's bear-proof lockers and use caution at their site. Alcohol is prohibited at Pennsylvania state parks.
