Lewistown camping overview
Lewistown sits in the Juniata River Valley of central Pennsylvania, with the ridges of the Seven Mountains rising to the north and Rothrock State Forest just beyond. The area gives RV travelers a mix of private riverside parks and a state park campground within a short drive, plus easy access to trout streams, hiking trails, and Amish country in nearby Belleville.
Closest to town, Waterside Campground and RV Park sits along the Juniata River and takes tents, RVs, and cabin guests. Hartman Center Campground in Milroy offers RV sites, cabins, and tiny homes in a wooded setting. Buttonwood Campground in Mifflintown runs a large family-oriented operation along the Juniata with close to 300 sites, and Seven Mountains Campground near Spring Mills serves as a year-round base close to Penn State.
For a public option, Greenwood Furnace State Park is about 20 miles from Lewistown on PA 305 and offers 49 tent and trailer sites plus two walk-in sites, backed by an 80,000-acre state forest.
Things to do around Lewistown
The Juniata River is the main draw. Guests at Buttonwood Campground can float or tube directly from the property and rent canoes or kayaks, and Waterside Campground and RV Park sits along the river for fishing and paddling access. Trout anglers head for Standing Stone Creek, the Little Juniata, and Spruce Creek, all within reasonable driving range.
For hiking and mountain biking, Rothrock State Forest surrounds Greenwood Furnace State Park and connects to long-distance ridge trails. Families staying at Seven Mountains Campground can day-trip to Poe Valley State Park, Bald Eagle State Park, Penn's Cave and Wildlife Park, and the Arboretum at Penn State in State College. Belleville's Wednesday Amish sale is a short drive from most of these campgrounds.

Buttonwood Campground operates mid-April through the end of October, and reservations fill early for holiday weekends and any dates tied to Penn State home football in the fall.
Greenwood Furnace State Park has a shorter season. Its 49 tent and trailer sites and two walk-in sites are open from mid-April until mid-November, and the park's six-acre lake is stocked with trout in spring. Fall foliage across the Seven Mountains typically peaks in mid to late October.
Winter narrows the choices significantly. Seven Mountains Campground stays open year round for cabins and hardy RVers, while most private parks in the valley wind down after October. Snow, ice, and cold overnight temperatures are the norm from December through February.

Shawn and Melinda made it easy to hold a memorable Penn State tailgate, even for someone like me who is new to RV rental. The Beaver Stadium RV lot didn’t have RV hookups so they made sure we had water and extra gas for the generator. They thought if every detail. The RV was super clean and well-stocked. They had excellent communication and were so friendly and helpful. I would 100% rent from them again.

This was my first time renting an RV and it was the smoothest process! The hosts were in contact with me before delivery so I knew exactly when they would arrive. They were so friendly and set up the entire camper and gave me a tour. We had an awesome experience, thank you!

How to book near Lewistown
Greenwood Furnace State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Sites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, and popular summer weekends often sell out early. Campers arriving after noon are advised to contact park staff for site instructions.
Private parks book directly. Waterside Campground and RV Park, Buttonwood Campground, Hartman Center Campground, and Seven Mountains Campground all accept reservations through their own websites or by phone. For Penn State football weekends, book Seven Mountains and Hartman Center well ahead, since both sit within easy reach of State College.
Check rig-length limits and hookup type when reserving. Greenwood Furnace has 44 electric sites and one host site with full hookups, while private parks in the valley generally offer 30/50-amp electric with varying levels of water and sewer service.
What to expect on site
Terrain around Lewistown is a mix of river flats and steep wooded ridges. Roads through the Greenwood Furnace State Park campground are paved and one-way, but some connector routes in the surrounding state forest are unpaved and narrow, so plan a route in advance for larger rigs. Cell service can be spotty in and around Pennsylvania state parks, and downloading maps before arrival is recommended.
Amenities vary widely. Buttonwood runs a pool, mini-golf, jumping pillow, laser tag, an on-site wine barn, and a camp store. Seven Mountains has RV sites with water and electric plus a dump station. Greenwood Furnace has a shower house, dump station, and amphitheater, but no full-service store on site.
Pet policies differ by park, so confirm breed and weight rules when booking.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lewistown, PA?
RV rental in Lewistown, PA is one of the most affordable ways to explore central Pennsylvania. On RVezy, towable trailers near Lewistown average around $125 per night, while motorhomes average about $200 per night, and many hosts offer 10-20% weekly or monthly discounts. To find a cheap RV rental in Lewistown, filter by your dates, sort by price, and consider midweek pickups in May or September when demand dips. Add fuel, campground fees ($30-$70 at most local parks), and any add-ons like generators or bike racks to plan your full budget. Pro tip: booking a travel trailer paired with delivery often beats the cost of a drivable motorhome, especially for a long weekend at Raystown Lake.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lewistown,%20PennsylvaniaWhat kind of license do I need to rent an RV in Lewistown, PA?
Great news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lewistown, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on RVezy. You must be at least 25 years old to book on RVezy, and your ID is confirmed quickly through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. Pro tip: if you have never towed before, choose a Class C motorhome for your first Lewistown RV trip, it drives much like a large van.
pa.gov/agencies/penndot/driver-and-vehicle-services.htmlIs RV rental in Lewistown protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Lewistown, PA booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, and it covers eligible accidental damage to the vehicle so you can drive into the Seven Mountains region with confidence. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip if you need help. Pro tip: review the protection options side-by-side at booking, the higher tier usually pencils out nicely if you are heading onto winding routes like US-322 through Jacks Mountain.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Lewistown RV rental?
You can book with confidence: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental, not individual hosts, so the rules are consistent across listings. There is a money-back grace period after booking, and the refund amount after that depends on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. Central Pennsylvania can see surprise snow into early April or remnants of tropical storms in late summer, so it is genuinely useful to know the policy upfront. Review the current cancellation details on RVezy before you book, then reach out to support if anything shifts. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Lewistown RVs, you can still adjust later within the policy window.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Lewistown?

Greenwood Furnace State Park, about a 30-minute drive northwest, is another favorite for shaded trails. Pro tip: pack a long tie-out line, a collapsible water bowl, and your dog's vaccination records, Pennsylvania state park campgrounds typically ask to see proof of rabies vaccination at check-in.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/reeds-gap-state-park.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Lewistown?
Yes, RV delivery in Lewistown is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if you are first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to your campsite at Waterside Campground, Seven Mountains Campground in nearby Spring Mills, or a private property in Mifflin County, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything. You just show up with your gear and groceries. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host, usually a flat rate plus a per-mile cost beyond a set radius. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your campground name, most will quote you a delivered-and-set-up price within hours.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lewistown,%20Pennsylvania&Delivery=trueHow does mileage work, and how far can I realistically drive from Lewistown?
Mileage is straightforward: every RVezy host sets a daily mileage allowance with a per-mile rate for anything over, and a growing number of Lewistown listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for longer loops. From Lewistown, you can easily reach Raystown Lake (about 50 miles south), State College and Penn State (about 35 miles northwest), Knoebels Amusement Resort (about 70 miles east), Gettysburg (about 90 miles south), and Hershey (about 75 miles southeast). Even Washington, D.C. is only about 165 miles. Pro tip: estimate your total miles before booking, including campground side trips, then compare a higher daily rate with unlimited miles against a lower rate plus overage fees, the unlimited option often wins on any Lewistown RV trip over four days.

Waterside Campground & RV Park at 475 Locust Road sits riverfront with full hookups, a pool, and easy access to the Juniata River. Seven Mountains Campground in Spring Mills offers wooded RV sites about 25 minutes away. Penn Roosevelt State Park and Greenwood Furnace State Park round out the best campgrounds near Lewistown for those wanting a forested feel. Pro tip: book Waterside early for summer weekends, riverfront sites fill fast once the Mifflin County Youth Fair rolls around in July.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/greenwood-furnace-state-park.htmlWhen is the best time to visit Lewistown in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for a Lewistown RV trip, with June, August, and September offering the most comfortable weather. Summer highs typically run in the low 80s with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s, while September delivers crisp mornings and that famous central Pennsylvania foliage starting in early October. Winters are cold (January highs around 33°F and lows near 20°F) and snowy, so most campgrounds close from late October to mid-April, though Waterside stays open year-round. Pro tip: aim for the second weekend in October, you'll catch peak fall color across the Seven Mountains, the Reeds Gap Fall Festival, and far fewer mosquitoes than in July.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Lewistown&state=PA&site=CTPI have never driven an RV before, what should I know?
You're going to do great, and you're not alone, most people renting an RV in Lewistown are first-timers. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and dumping tanks, so you leave knowing how everything works. Class C motorhomes drive like an oversized van and are the friendliest entry point. The roads around Lewistown are forgiving once you're off US-322 and onto local highways like PA-103 or PA-655. Pro tip: do a slow lap of an empty parking lot (the Mifflin County fairgrounds works well on weekdays) to practice turning and backing before heading to your campsite, and ask your host to text you their cell number for quick questions on day one.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/SafetyHomePageFiles/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're parked at Waterside or rolling through the Bald Eagle State Forest. Roadside covers things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. RVezy's customer support team is also available to coordinate with you and your host. Cell coverage can be spotty in the ridges around Lewistown, so save the roadside number in your phone and screenshot it before you head out. Pro tip: ask your host at pickup where the propane tank shutoff, fuse panel, and spare tire live, knowing those three things prevents most stress on a central PA RV road trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lewistown RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most RVezy hosts in Lewistown happily allow interstate travel, perfect for an RV road trip from Lewistown to New York's Finger Lakes, Maryland's Assateague Island, or West Virginia's New River Gorge. Travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the individual host and the protection package, so just message the host through the listing before booking to confirm and they'll let you know what's needed for cross-border insurance. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: popular multi-state loops from Lewistown include the 250-mile run east to Lancaster's Amish Country and on to the Pocono Mountains, or south to Shenandoah National Park (about 4 hours), both doable in a long weekend.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on a Lewistown RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but Lewistown's central location keeps it manageable. Class B campervans average 18-22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8-12 mpg, and Class A motorhomes 6-9 mpg. Pennsylvania has some of the higher gas taxes in the country, so expect pump prices a bit above the national average, check GasBuddy along US-22 in Lewistown for the best stations. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C at 10 mpg with $3.60/gallon gas, you're looking at roughly $145 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Lewistown or Burnham before heading into the mountains, prices climb noticeably once you get closer to State College and Penn State football traffic.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campsite near Lewistown?
For the best campgrounds near Lewistown, book as early as you can: Pennsylvania State Parks allow reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official reservation system, and popular spots like Reeds Gap, Greenwood Furnace, and Poe Valley fill quickly for summer weekends. Private parks like Waterside Campground and Seven Mountains take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. For Memorial Day, July 4th, and the October foliage weekends, aim for at least 3-4 months out. Midweek stays in June or September can often be snagged just a week or two ahead. Pro tip: if your first-choice state park is full, use the cancellation alert tools that monitor the PA reservation system, sites open up almost daily as plans change.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the roads and driving conditions like around Lewistown?
Driving an RV around Lewistown is genuinely pleasant once you know the layout. US-322 is the main four-lane corridor connecting Lewistown to State College and Harrisburg, with gentle grades through Seven Mountains, no white-knuckle passes. Local routes like PA-103, PA-655, and PA-35 are two-lane and curvy through the ridges, so take them slow in a larger rig. Watch for Amish horse-drawn buggies in the Belleville and Big Valley area, especially Wednesdays during the Belleville Auction. Winter brings ice and lake-effect snow on the ridges from December through March. Pro tip: avoid US-322 westbound on Penn State home-football Saturdays, traffic backs up for miles, take PA-655 north through Reedsville as a scenic and faster alternative.
511pa.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Lewistown offer, and where can I dump or refill water?
Most campgrounds near Lewistown are well-equipped for RVs. Waterside Campground & RV Park offers full hookups (water, electric 30/50 amp, sewer), Wi-Fi, a dump station, and potable water fill. Seven Mountains Campground has similar full-hookup sites plus laundry. State parks like Greenwood Furnace and Poe Valley typically offer electric and water sites with a central dump station, but no sewer at the pad. If you're boondocking on state forest land in nearby Bald Eagle or Rothrock, plan ahead, dump stations are scattered. Pro tip: the dump station at Waterside is available to non-guests for a small fee, which is handy if you're returning your rental and want to drop the tanks empty to avoid any dumping add-on charge from your host.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/poe-valley-state-park.htmlWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Lewistown?
You'll feel right at home: a motorhome rental in Lewistown typically includes a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette or sofa bed, a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, plus a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower. Most Class C and travel trailer rentals sleep 4-6 comfortably, with seatbelts for travel passengers in motorhomes. Air conditioning, furnace, and a TV are standard on most listings, and many hosts include a generator or solar setup. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts add a mobile hotspot as an option. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps and check the photos and amenity list on each listing, and message the host if you need specifics like a CPAP-friendly outlet or a quiet inverter for a riverside stay along the Juniata.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/things-to-do/camping.htmlWhat add-ons can I get, and how does pickup and drop-off work?
Hosts in Lewistown make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, generators, propane fire pits, and even kayaks, with fees typically ranging from $10 to $75 per item for the trip. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a mutually agreed spot in Lewistown, Burnham, or Reedsville, and includes a 30-60 minute orientation walkthrough. Drop-off is at the same location at the time you both agreed on, with the RV returned reasonably clean and tanks handled per the listing. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you're heading to a non-electric site at Reeds Gap or boondocking in Bald Eagle State Forest, central PA evenings get chilly fast and you'll want heat without draining the house battery.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-forests.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: RVezy processes everything through the platform, so you never hand cash or a check to a host. You pay your rental total at booking, and a refundable security deposit is placed on hold shortly before your trip begins, with the amount set by the host and shown on the listing. After return, assuming there's no damage beyond what the protection plan covers and the RV is returned per the listing terms, the hold is released back to your card, typically within a few business days. Pro tip: at pickup, do a quick walk-around video with your host on your phone showing the exterior, tires, and interior condition, it takes two minutes and gives both of you a clear record for a smooth deposit refund after your Lewistown RV trip wraps up.
