Camping near Masthope, Pennsylvania
Masthope sits in Pike County in the northern Poconos, on the Pennsylvania side of the Upper Delaware River and within short driving distance of Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest lake in the region. The location puts RV travelers between two major water-based recreation corridors: the Delaware, with its rafting outfitters and riverfront campgrounds, and Lake Wallenpaupack, with its ring of public recreation areas and marinas.
Campground options nearby fall into three main categories. Kittatinny Campgrounds and Kittatinny's K-Camp Campground serve river-focused visitors with tent and RV sites tied to the outfitter's paddling operation on the Delaware. Wilsonville Recreational Area PPL offers lakeside camping on Lake Wallenpaupack with electric hookups and boat access. The Pines - Promised Land State Park delivers a rustic, forested experience on the Pocono Plateau, and Happy Days Campground adds another private-park option in the surrounding area.
Most sites are seasonal, and demand is highest for summer weekends and fall foliage weeks, so early reservations are important for RV parties.
Things to do around Masthope
The Delaware River is the headline activity. Kittatinny Campgrounds runs rafting, canoe, kayak, and tubing trips on the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, offering trips for a range of experience levels with equipment and shuttle included.
Lake Wallenpaupack covers roughly 5,700 acres with 52 miles of shoreline and supports boating, fishing for bass, pickerel, and stocked trout, plus the Wallenpaupack Lake Trail along the shore. A public swimming beach adjacent to Wilsonville Recreational Area PPL is the designated swimming spot on the lake.
Promised Land State Park adds around 3,000 acres on the Pocono Plateau, surrounded by more than 12,000 acres of Delaware State Forest. Two lakes, non-wake boating, swimming beaches, and a network of easy-to-moderate hiking trails make it a good choice for families with younger children.

The core RV season runs from late April or early May through mid-October. Wilsonville Recreational Area PPL and the other Brookfield-operated Lake Wallenpaupack campgrounds run from about the last weekend in April through the third Sunday in October, with electricity, hot showers, coin laundry, and an on-site dump station available during that window. Kittatinny's riverfront campgrounds typically run from mid-spring into fall.
At Promised Land State Park, camping loops vary. Lower Lake Campground is open from early April through mid-October, with modern facilities from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, while The Pines - Promised Land State Park is a summer-only campground open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Limited sites and camping cottages at Pickerel Point stay open year-round.
Summer brings the warmest water and busiest campgrounds. Late September into mid-October is prime for fall color in the hardwood forests. Winter closes most sites, and area roads see significant snowfall.
How to book campgrounds near Masthope
Promised Land State Park sites, including The Pines - Promised Land State Park, are reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance and must be made at least three days ahead of arrival. Cabins and prime summer weekends fill early, so book as soon as the window opens.
Wilsonville Recreational Area PPL is booked directly through the campground rather than a central state system, so contact the operator for site availability and cancellation terms. Kittatinny Campgrounds and Kittatinny's K-Camp Campground are reserved through Kittatinny's own website, often bundled with a river trip. Happy Days Campground and other private parks in the area take reservations directly. For RV travelers, confirm hookup type, rig length limits, and pet policies before booking.
What to expect on the ground
Hookup levels vary widely. Wilsonville Recreational Area PPL offers electric sites with an on-site dump station and hot showers, but no full sewer at individual sites. Kittatinny's Delaware River campgrounds mix tent, waterfront, and RV sites over wooded acreage with bathhouses, a camp store, and laundry on site. At Promised Land State Park, The Pines - Promised Land State Park has 58 rustic sites without hookups but with flush toilets, while the Lower Lake Beechwood loop offers electric sites best suited to RVs and Pickerel Point includes some full-hookup sites.
Black bears are active throughout the region, and park staff at Promised Land require food to be stored in vehicles or hard-sided compartments. Pets are prohibited at the Lake Wallenpaupack PPL recreation areas but allowed on designated sites at Promised Land. Cell coverage can be spotty in forested pockets, so download maps before arrival.

Booking is low risk on RVezy. The cancellation policy is set by RVezy (not individual hosts), and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. Bring vaccination records, a 6 foot leash (required in all PA state parks), and a few towels for muddy paws. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and breed preferences. Most Masthope hosts are easygoing about well-behaved dogs.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/pet-friendly-camping.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Masthope?
Yes, RV delivery in Masthope is one of the best perks of booking through RVezy, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. They level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. Delivery fees are set by each host and typically scale with distance. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campground name so they can confirm site access. It turns your campervan rental in Masthope into a true plug-and-play vacation.

penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Masthope, PA?

Pro tip: PA state park sites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, and Ironwood Point fills up fast for July 4th and Labor Day weekends, so book early.
visitpa.com/region/pocono-mountains/campingWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Masthope?
Masthope is genuinely a four-season destination, so the best time depends on your vibe. Late May through mid-October is prime for warm-weather camping, with July highs around 82 degrees Fahrenheit and overnight lows in the low 60s, perfect for lakeside evenings. Fall foliage peaks early to mid-October and is spectacular along Route 590 and the Lackawaxen River. Winter (December through March) brings 50+ inches of average snow and full operations at Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain, less than a mile from the community center, making this a top winter RV destination if you book a winter-ready rig. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (late April to mid-June, and late September to October) deliver the best mix of mild weather, lower rates, and open campsites.
weather.gov/bgm/Is winter RV rental possible in Masthope?
Yes, winter RV rental in Masthope is absolutely doable, and it is a hidden gem of a season. Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain offers downhill trails just a short drive from most rentals in the community. For cold weather, filter for RVs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a reliable propane furnace, then plan to stay at a campground offering winter shore power. Pro tip: ask your host to demo the cold-weather setup or run the rig fully winterized with bottled water for drinking. Pair an early ski day with a hot tub night and you have a Pocono weekend most people never think to book.
skibigbear.com/I've never driven an RV before. Is Masthope a good place to start?
Masthope is a great spot for first time renting an RV. The roads in and around Lackawaxen Township are mostly two-lane rural routes with light traffic, and US-6 and PA-590 are well-maintained and scenic without being technical. Your RVezy host will give you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering propane, slide-outs, leveling, dump procedures, and backing up, so you will not leave the driveway guessing. If maneuvering a 28 foot Class C still feels intimidating, just book delivery and let the host set everything up at your campground. Pro tip: start with a travel trailer at a delivered site, or pick a Class B campervan rental in Masthope for easier driving. You will be confident by day two.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002073013-Renting-an-RVWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so whether you're stuck with a flat on Interstate 84 outside Matamoras, a dead battery at Ironwood Point, or a tow situation on PA-590, one call gets help dispatched. Common services covered include towing, jump-starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Your host is also your second line of support; many Masthope-area hosts live within 30 minutes and will troubleshoot quickly by phone. Pro tip: save the RVezy Help Center number and your host's number in your phone before pulling out of the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, which speeds up any roadside dispatch.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/SafetyandTraining/Pages/default.aspxCan I take my Masthope RV rental to New York or New Jersey?
Yes, interstate trips are common and easy on an RV road trip from Masthope. You are only about 1 mile from the New York state line at Minisink Ford via the historic Roebling Bridge, and roughly 50 miles from the New Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap. Most Masthope hosts allow travel throughout the Northeast, including New York's Catskills, the Finger Lakes, and the Jersey Shore. Always confirm cross-state travel with your host in the booking message before you book. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: a popular three-day loop runs Masthope to Bethel Woods (about 20 miles), up to Cooperstown, NY, and back through the Delaware Water Gap.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Pocono RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger line items, so plan ahead. Class C motorhomes in this size range typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans run 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Pennsylvania gas prices have recently been hovering around $3.40 to $3.70 per gallon for regular, with diesel slightly higher. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile loop from Masthope to Lake Wallenpaupack and Bushkill Falls, budget roughly $120 to $180 in fuel for a mid-size Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Honesdale or Hawley before heading deeper into the mountains, since prices climb at the smaller stations near Lackawaxen and Shohola. Apps like GasBuddy will save you real money.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Masthope?
Book early, especially for summer weekends and fall foliage. Pennsylvania state parks like Promised Land open reservations 11 months ahead through ReserveAmerica, and prime lakeside sites at Ironwood Point on Lake Wallenpaupack are typically gone 3 to 6 months out for July and August. Private resorts like Otter Lake and the Delaware Water Gap KOA also fill fast for July 4th, Labor Day, and Columbus Day fall-foliage weekends. For midweek or shoulder-season trips, you can often book 2 to 4 weeks out and still get great sites. Pro tip: if your top pick shows full, check back the Monday before your dates. Cancellations roll in once final-payment deadlines hit, and you'll snag last-minute openings.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Masthope?
Driving around Masthope is mostly relaxed and beautiful, with two-lane rural roads winding through Pocono forests. The main routes (US-6, PA-590, and PA-434) are well-maintained, but expect some steep grades and tight switchbacks on the climb up Masthope Mountain itself, plus occasional deer crossings at dawn and dusk. Winter brings real snow (50+ inches annually), so if you're driving December through March, ask your host about tire condition and keep tire chains in mind for ski-week trips. Summer is straightforward. Pro tip: avoid driving the steep community roads after a heavy rain or fresh snow if you're new to RVs, and use the larger pull-offs on PA-590 near Westcolang Lake to let faster local traffic pass.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at Masthope-area campgrounds?
Most campgrounds near Masthope come well equipped. Ironwood Point and Promised Land State Park offer modern restrooms with hot showers, electric hookups (30 and 50 amp at most sites), potable water fill stations, and on-site dump stations. Private parks like Otter Lake Camp Resort and the Delaware Water Gap KOA add full sewer hookups, WiFi, swimming pools, and camp stores. Need to dump or top off water between stops? The Honesdale and Hawley areas have public dump stations at select campgrounds for a small fee. Pro tip: PA state park sites are alcohol-free and have a 9 PM quiet-hours rule, so if you want a livelier vibe with a poolside tiki bar, lean toward private resorts. Either way, you're set for a comfortable stay.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat features and amenities should I expect inside a Masthope RV rental?
You'll find more comfort than you might expect. Most Masthope-area RV rentals come with a full kitchen (3-burner propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer), a bathroom with hot shower and flush toilet, sleeping for 4 to 8 depending on size, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and a dinette that converts to a bed. Many include a TV with DVD, outdoor speakers, awning with LED lights, and seatbelted seating for travel. WiFi and onboard generators vary by listing, so check the amenities tab. Pro tip: if you want to boondock at one of the more rustic Delaware River access points, filter for an onboard generator and solar. For glamping-level luxury, search for Class A motorhomes with washer/dryer combos. Either way, you'll be cozy.
nps.gov/upde/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhat add-ons can I get with my RV rental Pennsylvania trip?
Hosts offer a great range of add-ons that make your RV rental Pennsylvania experience smoother. Popular options include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, kayaks or SUPs (perfect for Lake Wallenpaupack), bike racks, portable grills, and generators for boondocking. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup, propane refills, and dump-station service for a flat fee at trip end. Pickup and dropoff times are typically 11 AM and noon respectively, but flexible if the calendar allows. Mileage policies vary by listing, so check before booking. Pro tip: bundle a few add-ons and message the host. They'll often discount the whole package if you ask politely.
visitpa.com/region/pocono-mountainsHow do payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Masthope?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, and the security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, typically pre-authorized on your card shortly before pickup rather than charged outright. Deposit amounts vary by listing depending on the size and class of RV. As long as you return the rig in the condition you received it, with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after the trip. To avoid any surprises, complete the pre-trip walkthrough photos and video with your host at pickup, and do the same at return. Pro tip: keep fuel and dump-station receipts handy, they are your best proof if any question pops up later.
