Campgrounds near Mertztown, Pennsylvania
Mertztown is a small unincorporated community in Berks County, Pennsylvania, set among the rolling farmland and ridges of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country region between Reading and Allentown. The area sits just south of I-78 and Kutztown, which puts a cluster of private RV parks and family campgrounds within a short drive of town.
Closest to Mertztown is Pine Hill RV Park, a Kutztown-area park with pull-through sites, full hookups, and easy access from I-78. Nearby options include Lazy-K Campground Inc, a smaller family-run property, and Sacony Park Campgrounds outside Kutztown. Robin Hill RV Resort and Campground in Lenhartsville is a larger destination resort with a pool, cabins, and roughly 212 sites spread across a hillside property.
For travelers willing to drive 20 to 30 minutes, Allentown KOA Journey in New Tripoli offers a stream-side setting, cabins, and a family-oriented amenity package. Together these parks cover overnight travelers on I-78 as well as families booking week-long stays.
Things to do near Mertztown
Crystal Cave, one of Pennsylvania's best-known show caves, is a short drive from Mertztown and works well as a rainy-day option with kids. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, north of Kutztown, is a major raptor-migration lookout with several miles of trails along the Kittatinny Ridge. The Appalachian Trail also crosses the ridge just north of the region.
Families often pair a campground stay with Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom in Allentown, the Crayola Experience in Easton, and Cabela's in Hamburg. Kutztown itself hosts the long-running Kutztown Folk Festival each summer, and several wineries and farm stands operate in the surrounding valleys.
For water and paddling, Blue Marsh Lake near Reading and the Schuylkill River offer boat launches, swimming beaches, and multi-use trails within about a 30-minute drive.

Most private campgrounds in the Mertztown area run a spring-through-fall season rather than staying open year-round. Allentown KOA Journey operates from about April 1 through November 1, and Robin Hill RV Resort and Campground follows a similar early-April to early-November window. Pine Hill RV Park is listed as seasonal as well, so travelers planning shoulder-season trips should confirm opening dates before booking.
Peak demand runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, with holiday weekends and the Kutztown Folk Festival period in late June and early July filling sites earliest. Pools at family parks like Allentown KOA typically open Memorial Day weekend and close after Labor Day. September and early October are quieter, with warm days, cool nights, and reliable fall foliage across the ridges.
Winter camping options in the immediate area are limited. General nightly RV camping essentially pauses from November until spring, though some parks offer extended monthly or seasonal stays.

How to book campgrounds near Mertztown
Private parks in the area take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Allentown KOA Journey books through the KOA reservation system, and Robin Hill RV Resort and Campground reserves through the Thousand Trails and Encore network. Pine Hill RV Park, Lazy-K Campground Inc, and Sacony Park Campgrounds are family-run and generally accept phone reservations along with online forms.
For state park camping in the wider region, such as French Creek State Park to the south, reservations go through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation website on ReserveAmerica. Most Pennsylvania state park sites open 11 months in advance at noon Eastern Time, and popular summer weekends often sell out the day they become available.
Book summer holiday weekends and festival dates several months out. For midweek stays outside July and August, shorter lead times are usually workable.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Mertztown is rolling farmland framed by forested ridges, and most campgrounds sit on gently sloped or terraced ground rather than flat river bottom. Sites at Pine Hill RV Park are generally level with pull-through options suited to larger rigs, though the park is close enough to I-78 that some road noise carries. Robin Hill's terraced sites deliver open views but can turn soft after heavy rain.
Cell coverage from major carriers is generally usable across the area, and most private parks offer Wi-Fi of varying quality. Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are common at the larger parks; smaller properties may offer water and electric only.
Expect farmland smells near dairy and horse operations, seasonal insects in summer evenings, and typical mid-Atlantic thunderstorm activity from June through August.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mertztown,PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Mertztown, PA?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mertztown, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels, no matter the size. You'll just need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and you'll confirm your identity right through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pair your home-country license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club before you fly in. Most first-timers are shocked at how simple the paperwork is, so you can focus on planning the fun stuff like Crystal Cave and the Pinnacle hike.
dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/default.aspxIs RV insurance and roadside assistance included with my Mertztown rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Mertztown booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built into your reservation, so you can hit Route 222 with peace of mind. The protection plan covers accidental damage to the RV up to the limits of your selected tier, and you choose your coverage level during checkout to match your comfort zone. Roadside help covers flat tires, lockouts, jump starts, and towing if something unexpected happens between Mertztown and the Poconos. It is not a standard auto insurance policy, but the combined coverage takes a huge weight off first-time renters' shoulders.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Mertztown RV rental?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every RV rental in Pennsylvania, including Mertztown, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your summer trip with confidence. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, and extenuating circumstances like severe weather may be considered. You will see the full policy details and any applicable refund window during checkout, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Mertztown RV trip?
Absolutely, and Berks County is a fantastic place to road trip with a pup. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Mertztown, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings whose hosts explicitly welcome dogs and cats. Once you arrive, French Creek State Park, Blue Marsh Lake, and Nolde Forest all have leashed-dog trails, and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary's lookout trails permit dogs on leash too. Most local campgrounds, including Robin Hill Camping Resort and Blue Rocks Family Campground in nearby Lenhartsville, allow pets at the site. Pro tip: bring a long tie-out and a collapsible water bowl, since summer afternoons in Berks County regularly hit the mid-80s.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/FrenchCreekStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or property in Mertztown?
Yes, RV delivery in Mertztown is one of the smartest ways to enjoy your trip, especially if you've never towed a trailer or driven a motorhome. Many RVezy hosts in Berks, Lehigh, and Schuylkill counties will drive the RV to your campsite, set it up, level it, connect water, electric, and sewer hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular drop spots include French Creek State Park, Robin Hill Camping Resort, Sacony Family Campground, and Blue Rocks Family Campground. Just use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host to confirm the destination and any mileage fee. It turns a Mertztown RV trip into something closer to a turn-key cabin stay.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/Pages/default.aspxHow does mileage work, and can I find an RV rental with unlimited mileage?
Hosts set their own mileage policies in Mertztown, and you will see the included daily mileage and per-mile overage rate clearly on every listing before you book. Many local hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer Pennsylvania loop. For reference, Mertztown to Philadelphia is about 65 miles, to the Pocono Mountains around 70 miles, to Hershey roughly 55 miles, and to Gettysburg about 130 miles, so most weekend adventures fit comfortably inside standard mileage caps. Pro tip: if you are planning a big multi-state run, filter for unlimited-mileage listings first.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsWhere are the best campgrounds near Mertztown, PA?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Mertztown include French Creek State Park in Elverson (about 20 miles south, with 200+ wooded sites and Hopewell Lake), Blue Rocks Family Campground in Lenhartsville (15 miles north, famous for its boulder field and Appalachian Trail access), Robin Hill Camping Resort in Lenhartsville (full hookups and a pool), Sacony Family Campground in Kutztown (just minutes away with creekside sites), and Pine Hill RV Park in Kutztown for full-hookup pull-throughs. For RV camping Mertztown locals love, French Creek's dump station and electric sites are the gold standard. Pro tip: book state park sites through the official Pennsylvania reservation system up to 11 months in advance for prime summer weekends.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Mertztown?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for a Mertztown RV trip, with the absolute sweet spots being May (wildflowers and 70-degree days), late September, and the first three weeks of October when Berks County's sugar maples and oaks explode into red and gold. Summer highs typically hover in the low to mid 80s with humid afternoons, while spring and fall stay in the 60s and 70s with crisp nights. Winter rentals are available too, with January lows around 20 degrees, so look for hosts whose motorhomes have heated holding tanks and onboard furnaces. Pro tip: book leaf-peeping weekends by July, since Hawk Mountain raptor migration draws crowds every October.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
Yes, and you're in great hands. First time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy's host model is built for: every Mertztown host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, generator, leveling, hookups, and the dump valves, and they're a text away during your trip. If you're nervous about size, start with a Class B campervan rental Mertztown hosts list, or a 20 to 24 foot Class C, both of which drive much like a large pickup. Berks County's gentle two-lane roads (think Route 100 and Old Route 22) are forgiving practice ground before you tackle I-78 or the Northeast Extension. Pro tip: do a couple of right turns and a back-in at the host's driveway before you leave.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never stranded. Every RV rental in Mertztown booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified repair shop. If a system inside the RV acts up like the AC, fridge, or slide-out, your host is your first call since they know their rig best, and RVezy support is there to back you both up. PennDOT also runs 511PA, a free statewide traffic and incident service that is handy on I-78, I-476, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Pro tip: save your host's number, RVezy support, and 511PA in your phone before you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations within driving distance of Mertztown?
An RV road trip from Mertztown opens up some of the East Coast's best weekend escapes. Top picks include the Pocono Mountains (about 70 miles northeast for lakes and waterfalls), Hershey and Lancaster's Amish Country (55 to 70 miles west for chocolate, buggy rides, and farmers markets), Gettysburg National Military Park (around 130 miles southwest), the Delaware Water Gap (75 miles northeast), and Cape May, NJ for beach camping (about 165 miles southeast). Crossing into nearby states like New Jersey, New York, Maryland, or Delaware is generally fine on RVezy rentals, just confirm with your host before booking. Cross-border travel into Canada may be possible with host approval, but trips to Mexico are not permitted.
nps.gov/gett/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable on a Mertztown RV trip, but it is easy to plan for. Class A motorhomes typically get 7 to 10 miles per gallon, Class C rigs 10 to 14 MPG, Class B campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and trucks pulling travel trailers usually 10 to 13 MPG. Pennsylvania fuel prices tend to run slightly above the national average, so expect roughly $3.20 to $3.70 per gallon for regular and $3.80 to $4.30 for diesel in the Kutztown and Allentown area. Pro tip: fuel up in Berks County before heading into New Jersey, where pumps are full-service, or onto the PA Turnpike where prices climb.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground?
For RV camping Mertztown weekends in summer and fall, plan to reserve campgrounds 3 to 6 months ahead, and longer for holidays. Pennsylvania State Parks like French Creek, Blue Marsh, and Hickory Run open reservations 11 months in advance through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and prime summer Saturdays at French Creek often sell out within days of opening. Private parks like Blue Rocks, Robin Hill, and Sacony Family Campground take direct bookings on their websites and tend to fill 1 to 3 months out. Pro tip: if you strike out for a Saturday, grab a Sunday-through-Thursday stretch instead; you'll get the same trails with half the crowds and easier site selection.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Mertztown?
Driving an RV around Mertztown is genuinely manageable. Most of Berks County is rolling farmland with wide two-lane state routes like 222, 100, and 73 that are RV-friendly. The main things to watch: covered bridges in the Oley Valley have low clearances (some under 10 feet), so always route on Google Maps or RV Trip Wizard with vehicle height set, and avoid old downtown Kutztown's tight angle parking on a busy Saturday. I-78 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike are your best high-speed corridors. Winters can bring snow and ice from December through February, so check 511PA before heading out. Pro tip: skip Route 143 over Hawk Mountain in a big Class A, the switchbacks are tighter than the map suggests.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Mertztown?
Local campgrounds are well equipped for any rig. French Creek State Park offers electric hookups, modern restrooms with hot showers, a sanitary dump station, and potable water fill stations. Blue Rocks Family Campground and Robin Hill Camping Resort both offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer), laundry, pools, and Wi-Fi at many sites. Sacony Family Campground in Kutztown has electric and water sites plus a dump facility. For where to park an RV in Mertztown overnight without a reservation, Cabela's in Hamburg (about 15 miles north) is a well-known RV-friendly stop. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground; rural Berks County fill stations are sparse between parks.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/FrenchCreekStatePark/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs I'll see on RVezy in Mertztown?
Expect a real home on wheels. A typical motorhome rental Mertztown listing on RVezy sleeps 4 to 8 people and includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds, a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink, an enclosed bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most rigs come with a built-in generator or solar setup, awning, outdoor speakers, and an LED TV; many also have Wi-Fi hotspots, backup cameras, and Bluetooth stereos. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer similar layouts without the driving cab. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps to match your group, then check the listing photos for the specific bed configuration so nobody fights over the bunk.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Mertztown commonly offer add-ons like generator hours, propane refills, bike racks, kayaks, camp chairs, outdoor grills, linen and kitchen kits, and pet-cleaning fees, all priced per booking and listed clearly before you check out. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Berks, Lehigh, or Montgomery County, and many offer delivery to French Creek, Blue Rocks, or Robin Hill for a per-mile fee. Mileage caps and generator-hour limits are also shown on each listing. Pro tip: if you want a no-stress family RV trip Mertztown weekend, bundle delivery, setup, a linen package, and unlimited generator; you'll roll up to a finished campsite and start the marshmallows the moment you arrive.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit card at booking, and your reservation total covers the nightly rate, cleaning fee, taxes, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons you select. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card a few days before pickup and released after the trip if the RV is returned in the same condition it left in, with the tanks handled per the listing instructions. Deposit amounts vary by rig and are clearly displayed before you confirm. Pro tip: snap a quick video walkaround of the RV at pickup and dropoff in Mertztown; it is the easiest way to protect your deposit and avoid any back-and-forth.
