Campgrounds near Moosic, Pennsylvania
Moosic sits in the Lackawanna Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania, between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, and puts RV travelers within easy reach of two Pennsylvania state park campgrounds and several private options. The area works as a practical base for exploring the northern Poconos, the Endless Mountains, and the Lehigh River corridor.
The closest public campground is the 1,445-acre Lackawanna State Park, in northeastern Pennsylvania, ten miles north of Scranton. A short drive south, Frances Slocum State Park surrounds a scenic lake in the Wyoming Valley, west of Wilkes-Barre. Both parks offer flush toilets, showers, drinking water, and sanitary dump stations, with electric hookups on many sites.
Private options round out the mix. Highland Campgrounds and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park serve travelers looking for hookup stays closer to town, while Lehigh Gorge Campground, near White Haven, gives access to the Lehigh Gorge Trail and the whitewater section of the Lehigh River in the Pocono foothills.
Things to do near Moosic
Lake recreation drives most trip planning. The 198-acre Lackawanna Lake is surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails winding through forest, with boating, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming as popular activities. Frances Slocum Lake adds boat launches, an ADA-accessible fishing pier, and miles of hiking trails through woodlands and wetlands.
Families with older kids or bikes often head to the Lehigh Gorge corridor. The Lehigh Gorge Trail is a 26-mile multi-use rail trail that winds along the valley of the Lehigh River Gorge from White Haven to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. Whitewater boating and biking are popular activities. In Moosic itself, PNC Field hosts Triple-A baseball, and the Steamtown National Historic Site in downtown Scranton is a short drive north.

The state park camping season is short and predictable. At Lackawanna State Park, the campground opens mid-April and closes mid-October, and the maximum camping period is 14 consecutive days in the summer season and 21 consecutive days in the off-season. Frances Slocum follows the same window: a 100-site campground is available from mid-April to mid-October. Private grounds such as Lehigh Gorge Campground and Highland Campgrounds typically operate on a similar warm-weather schedule.
Summer weekends fill fastest. Weekends in summer fill the campground quickly, and quiet hours and no-alcohol rules are posted. Spring visits, particularly in April and early May, tend to be far less crowded. Fall brings cool nights and hardwood color from late September into mid-October, and is a strong window for hiking without bugs.
Winter shuts down camping but not the parks themselves. The park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset, with cross-country skiing and sledding available when snow cover allows.

How to book campgrounds near Moosic
Pennsylvania state parks use a single central reservation system. Bookings for Lackawanna and Frances Slocum can be made online for day use and overnight facilities or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, so peak summer weekends should be locked in early.
Private campgrounds book directly. Lehigh Gorge Campground takes reservations through its own office and website, and Highland Campgrounds and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park handle bookings by phone. For RV renters, confirm site length, hookup type, and pull-through availability at booking, since RV sites are paved, though some campers note they may not be perfectly level.
What to expect on-site near Moosic
State park campgrounds in this region are modern but rustic. At Lackawanna, options include traditional tent sites (including walk-in tent sites), RV sites with electric hookups, cabins, and yurts, and shower houses provide warm showers and flush toilets, with a sanitary dump station near the campground entrance. Frances Slocum offers flush toilets, showers, drinking water, sanitary dump station, and boat launch, with electric hookups on many sites but no full sewer connections.
Private campgrounds fill the hookup gap. Expect closer site spacing, pools, playgrounds, and family activities. Cell service is inconsistent throughout the region, so download park maps before arrival. Firewood rules are strictly enforced: bringing outside firewood into Pennsylvania state parks is discouraged to protect against invasive pests, so buy local instead.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Moosic, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Moosic, PA?
Renting an RV in Moosic, PA is more affordable than you might expect, especially compared to staying at hotels near Montage Mountain or PNC Field. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes average $175 to $275 per night, and luxury Class A coaches can reach $300 plus. You'll save the most by booking midweek, traveling in shoulder seasons (May or September), and choosing a tow-behind trailer if you already have a capable truck. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book listings to lock in availability fast during RailRiders home games and Pavilion at Montage Mountain concert weekends, when local demand spikes and prices climb.
moosicborough.com/information/attractions/What license do I need to rent an RV in Moosic, PA?
Good news: a regular driver's license from any U.S. state or Canadian province is all you need to rent an RV in Moosic. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for recreational vehicles under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Approved drivers must generally be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your identity through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra trip to a notary or DMV. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. Most first-time renters in Moosic are pleasantly surprised by how simple the paperwork is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Moosic RV rental?
Every RV rental in Moosic, PA comes with an RVezy protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included with your booking, so you can hit Interstate 81 with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover damages to the vehicle during your trip, a major financial safety net compared to renting from a private party. RVezy offers multiple renter protection tiers at checkout, so you (not the host) choose the level of coverage that fits your trip. Whether you're parking near PNC Field or heading into the Poconos, you're covered for the unexpected. For a first-time RV rental in Moosic, the higher tier is a smart choice.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I cancel my Moosic RV rental if my plans change?
Yes, you have flexibility. RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy that applies to every booking, with a grace-period window after you book where you can cancel for a full refund. The refund amount after that depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. Because RVezy (not the individual host) manages this policy, you get the same fair treatment whether your host has one rig or twenty. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates for a Scranton RailRiders weekend, knowing you have a clear safety net if life changes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Moosic RV trip?
Absolutely, and northeast PA is a fantastic region for it. Many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Moosic, so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see options instantly. Once you're on the road, your pup will love Lackawanna State Park (about 20 minutes north) with leashed trails and a designated pet swim area, plus the dog-friendly paths around McDade Park near the Lackawanna Coal Mine. Most local campgrounds, including Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort and Moon Lake Park, welcome dogs on leash. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee or breed notes, then pack a tie-out, water bowl, and waste bags. It's one of the easiest pet-friendly road trips in Pennsylvania.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LackawannaStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to me in Moosic?
Yes, RV delivery in Moosic is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're flying into Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport (AVP) just 10 minutes away. Many hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer straight to your campground, hotel, or even your driveway, then handle the full setup, including leveling, hookups, and the orientation walkthrough. That's a huge win for first-time renters who don't want to tow anything. Popular delivery destinations include Keen Lake Resort, Lackawanna State Park, and campgrounds in the Pocono Mountains. Filter for Delivery on the listing page, then message the host with your address to confirm the delivery fee, which is usually a flat rate plus mileage beyond a set radius.
flyavp.com/How far can I drive on a Moosic RV trip?
You've got serious range from Moosic, PA, which sits right on Interstate 81 and 30 minutes from Interstate 80, two of the best RV corridors in the Northeast. From here, the Pocono Mountains are about 30 to 40 minutes south, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is about 50 miles (1 hour), the Finger Lakes in New York are around 150 miles (3 hours), and New York City sits 130 miles (2.5 hours) east. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, then charge $0.30 to $0.50 per additional mile. If you're planning a longer RV road trip from Moosic, look for listings advertising RV rental with unlimited mileage to save big on a multi-state loop.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Moosic, PA?
You're spoiled for choice on RV camping in Moosic. Lackawanna State Park (15 miles north in Dalton) offers 89 wooded sites with electric hookups, a lake for kayaking, and quick access to hiking trails. Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort in Waymart is a classic family-friendly RV park with a private lake, full hookups, and a pool. Moon Lake Park in Hunlock Creek offers rustic sites with electric for budget travelers. For a Pocono-area base, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton KOA Holiday in Bear Creek delivers full hookups and resort-style amenities. Pro tip: book the state park sites the moment your dates open on the Pennsylvania reservation system, they sell out fast for summer weekends.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LackawannaStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Moosic, PA in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV trip from Moosic, but each season has its own appeal. Summer (June to August) brings warm days in the high 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit, perfect for RailRiders games at PNC Field and Pavilion at Montage Mountain concerts. September and early October are arguably the best months: highs in the 60s and 70s, fewer crowds, and absolutely jaw-dropping fall foliage across the Endless Mountains and Pocono region. Spring (April and May) is cool and rainy but quiet and affordable. Winters get cold, often in the 20s and 30s with snow, so confirm with the host that the RV has a working furnace and winterized plumbing if you're booking November through March.
weather.gov/ctp/What if it's my first time renting an RV in Moosic?
You're in great hands. First time renting an RV in Moosic is genuinely easier than people expect because every host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, water system, slide-outs, dump procedures, and safe driving tips. Many Moosic-area hosts also offer delivery, which means you skip the driving-the-rig-home part entirely and just step inside a fully set-up RV. The streets around Moosic and nearby Scranton are wide and easy to navigate, and Interstate 81 has gentle grades compared to mountain passes out west. Message your host with any questions before booking, and remember RVezy customer support is reachable 24/7 throughout your trip.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I have a roadside issue during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Moosic, PA includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the RVezy protection plan, covering common situations like flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and towing needs. One call connects you with dispatch that understands what an RV needs, which matters when you're on Interstate 380 heading into the Poconos or on Route 6 toward the Endless Mountains. Your host is also a quick message away in the app for questions about quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the registration and protection documents kept in the RV.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Moosic RV rental on a cross-country or cross-border trip?
Yes, longer trips are absolutely allowed and Moosic is a phenomenal launchpad. Popular RV road trip from Moosic routes include the Finger Lakes wine country (about 3 hours northwest), Acadia National Park in Maine (about 9 hours northeast), Niagara Falls (about 4.5 hours), and Washington D.C. (about 3.5 hours south). Travel into Canada is generally permitted as long as you confirm with your host before booking and insurance is valid for the trip, so send a quick message through the listing. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Map your route, pack your passport for Canada trips, and you're set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Realistic expectations make budgeting easy. Class C motorhomes around Moosic typically get 8 to 10 miles per gallon on regular unleaded, Class A coaches average 6 to 8 mpg, campervans (Class B) get a respectable 14 to 18 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but usually drop its mpg by 25 to 40 percent. Pennsylvania gas prices generally run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes, so budget around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon when planning. A weekend Moosic to Pocono Mountains loop (around 150 miles total) might use $50 to $75 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up off-highway in Scranton or Dunmore for the best prices before heading into the mountains.
revenue.pa.gov/TaxTypes/MotorFuelTax/Pages/default.aspxHow far ahead should I book a campground near Moosic?
Earlier is better, especially for summer weekends. Pennsylvania State Parks like Lackawanna and Promised Land open reservations 11 months in advance through the state's online system, and the best lakeside electric sites disappear within hours for July and August Saturdays. Private parks like Keen Lake Resort and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton KOA typically open bookings further out and fill 2 to 3 months ahead for peak dates. For shoulder season (May, September, October), 3 to 4 weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: if you strike out on a state park site, check the system on Sunday evenings, that's when cancellations from the prior weekend's no-shows often free up prime spots.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Moosic?
Driving an RV around Moosic, PA is mostly stress-free thanks to wide highways and gentle terrain compared to mountain states out west. Interstate 81 runs right past town and connects you north to Binghamton or south to Wilkes-Barre with manageable grades. Interstate 380 toward the Poconos has a few longer climbs where you'll want to drop a gear in a heavier rig. Watch for rush hour congestion (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.) around the Montage Mountain Road exit and downtown Scranton. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so avoid mountain routes during active storms. Local tip: the Davis Street exit into Moosic itself has low-traffic side streets that are perfect for getting comfortable with a larger rig before hitting the highway.
511pa.com/What hookups and amenities will I find at Moosic-area campgrounds?
You'll have plenty of options. Most full-service RV parks near Moosic, including Keen Lake Resort and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton KOA, offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations on-site. Pennsylvania State Park campgrounds like Lackawanna and Promised Land typically offer electric-only sites with shared potable water spigots and central dump stations, so you'll need to fill your fresh tank at the entrance and dump on the way out. Cell service is solid across most of the Lackawanna Valley but gets spotty in the deeper Pocono woods. Pro tip: the Flying J Travel Center in Bartonsville (about 35 minutes south on I-380) has dedicated RV dump and fresh-water fill lanes if you need a mid-trip top-up.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Moosic?
More than you'd think. A typical motorhome rental in Moosic comes fully equipped with real beds (queen or king in many Class C and Class A rigs), a full kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge and freezer, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both AC and a propane furnace, and dining/lounging areas. Most include a TV, and many hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots, generators for boondocking, outdoor camp chairs, and fully stocked kitchen kits as add-ons. Seatbelts are provided for everyone listed on the booking, and the sleep count on each listing is accurate so you can match the RV to your group. Check the listing's amenities section carefully and message the host if you want specifics about coffee makers, BBQs, or bedding.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Moosic offer a great mix of add-ons that can simplify your trip. Common extras include kitchen and linen packages ($50 to $100 each), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generators ($25 to $40 per night plus fuel), bike racks, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees if you're bringing a dog. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a convenient meeting spot near Interstate 81, with delivery to local campgrounds or Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Airport available for an additional fee. Mileage policies typically range from 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.50 each. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking rather than asking last-minute, hosts often discount packages and you'll arrive to a fully-loaded rig ready to roll.
flyavp.com/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Moosic through RVezy, you pay the trip cost (rental, fees, taxes, and protection plan) by credit card through the platform, not directly with the host. A refundable security deposit is also held on your card before your trip starts, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, and it's released after the host confirms the rig is returned in good shape. To avoid deposit issues, take time-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and return, follow the dump and fuel-return instructions in your trip agreement, and clean up before drop-off. Transparent and simple, no surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV in and around Moosic for the night?
You have solid options for where to park an RV in Moosic and nearby. Overnight parking on residential streets and most public lots in Moosic Borough isn't permitted, so plan to stay at a designated campground or RV park. The closest full-service options are Lackawanna State Park (about 15 miles north), Keen Lake Camping and Cottage Resort (about 25 miles northeast), and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton KOA Holiday in Bear Creek (about 20 miles south). For a quick overnight stop, message ahead to local Walmart or casino properties that sometimes allow RV overnight parking, and always confirm with management on arrival. For a planned mid-trip rest, head to a designated campground rather than a highway service plaza.
