Mountain Top camping overview
Mountain Top sits on the Wyoming Valley plateau in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, within easy reach of the western Poconos and the Lehigh Gorge. RV travelers use it as a base for two distinct camping styles: quiet, forested state park loops and full-service private campgrounds geared to families and river trips.
The closest state park camping is at Frances Slocum State Park, which consists of 1,035 acres in Luzerne County and centers on a horseshoe-shaped, 165-acre lake popular for boating and fishing. South of town, the 15,990-acre Hickory Run State Park lies in the western foothills of the Pocono Mountains and features over 40 miles of hiking trails, three natural areas, and miles of trout streams. Private options include Lehigh Gorge Campground near White Haven, Moyers Grove Campground in Wapwallopen, and the Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers near Weatherly.
Highway access is straightforward from I-80 and I-476 (the Northeast Extension), and most sites are within a 30 to 45 minute drive of Mountain Top.
Things to do near Mountain Top
Whitewater rafting and biking on the Lehigh River are the headline activities. The Lehigh Gorge corridor follows the river from the Francis E. Walter Dam south toward Jim Thorpe, and the Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers sits directly on this corridor, pairing camping with guided rafting and inflatable kayak trips.
Hickory Run State Park offers a different pace. The park has over 40 miles of hiking trails, three state park natural areas, and miles of trout streams, plus the Boulder Field, a striking boulder-strewn area that is a National Natural Landmark. At Frances Slocum, the 165-acre lake supports boating and fishing, and hiking and mountain biking trails wind through the large day-use area.

The camping window at Pennsylvania state parks in this area runs roughly from the second Friday in April to the third Sunday in October for modern facilities. At Hickory Run, the campground has modern facilities from the second Friday in April until the third Sunday in October, when the dump station and all facilities with running water close for the season, and rustic camping continues until mid-December. Frances Slocum operates its 100-site campground from the second Friday in April to the third Sunday in October. The Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers is seasonal and typically runs from spring through mid-October.
Summer weekends and holidays fill first, especially sites with electric or full hookups. Fall brings cooler nights, foliage color through the Poconos, and better midweek availability. Winter closes most overnight facilities, though day-use access to the state parks continues year-round.
Bear activity is a real planning factor. At Hickory Run, overnight guests are required to store all food and any scented items such as toothpaste, deodorant, and dish soap in their vehicle while away from their site, and trash must go in the bear-proof dumpsters.

This was our family’s first time renting an RV after years of tent camping, and it was a great experience overall. Michael was an excellent host. He delivered the RV to our campsite, had everything set up and ready to go, and took the time to explain how everything worked. As first-time RV renters, that made the experience stress-free and much less intimidating. The RV itself was exactly what we needed for our family of four. It was spacious enough to sleep comfortably, kept us cool during the hot weather, kept us dry through the rain, and everything worked as expected. We spent most of our time outdoors and primarily used the RV for sleeping, and it was perfect for that. The only reason I’m mentioning this is so future renters know what to expect. When we first arrived, there was a noticeable odor inside the RV. As the trip went on, it seemed to be coming from the bathroom/holding tank area. When I mentioned it to Michael at pickup, he was very open about it and explained that it’s something he has to deep clean every few rentals to eliminate the smell. I appreciated his honesty, but since it’s a known issue rather than a one-time occurrence, I think it’s fair for future renters to be aware of it. Other than that, we had a fantastic experience. Michael was friendly, responsive, and easy to work with, and I wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again

How to book campgrounds near Mountain Top
Pennsylvania state parks use a single reservation system for both Hickory Run and Frances Slocum. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, and must be made at least 3 days ahead of arrival through the online portal. Bookings can also be made by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Arrival dates earlier than the online window may still be available directly from the campground on a first-come basis.
Private campgrounds book directly with the operator. Moyers Grove Campground and Lehigh Gorge Campground take reservations by phone or through their websites. Onsite camping at the Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers is offered to guests who also book rafting or inflatable kayaking with Whitewater Challengers, so the trip and the site are booked together.
What to expect at Mountain Top campgrounds
Hookups vary by campground. At Hickory Run, the large tent and trailer camping area has modern restrooms with hot showers and a sanitary dump station, many sites offer electric service, and a smaller number of sites have full hookups with water, electric, and sewer. Frances Slocum has 85 tent or trailer sites, some ADA accessible and some with electric hookups, plus 15 walk-in tent sites, flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a sanitary dump station, and a boat launch.
Private campgrounds trend more amenity-heavy. Moyers Grove Campground offers full-hookup sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp service, a solar-heated swimming pool, mini golf, and fishing ponds. Lehigh Gorge Campground offers RV sites with electric hookups and additional amenities on site.
Bear-aware food storage is required at Hickory Run, and cell coverage is uneven off the highway corridors, so download offline maps before arrival.

Booking is low risk because RVezy has a clear cancellation policy that includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you have breathing room to finalize plans. Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Mountain Top options are easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings where dogs (and often cats) are welcome with a quick note in the booking request. Many Luzerne County campgrounds, including Moyers Grove in Wapwallopen, welcome leashed pets. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee (usually $25 to $75) and bring a long lead so Fido can stretch out at camp.

penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat are the best campgrounds near Mountain Top, PA?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Mountain Top travelers love. Top picks include Hickory Run State Park in White Haven (about 15 minutes south, with hundreds of sites, a famous boulder field, and waterfalls), Ricketts Glen State Park (about an hour north, famous for its 22 waterfalls and year-round camping), Frances Slocum State Park near Wyoming (great for families and kayaking), Moyers Grove Campground in Wapwallopen (private park with full hookups and a pool), and Council Cup Campground in Wapwallopen for quieter wooded sites. Most state parks offer electric hookups but limited water and sewer, so plan a stop at a dump station before heading home. Book Pennsylvania state parks well in advance for summer weekends, they fill fast.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/RickettsGlenStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Mountain Top, PA?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for an RV rental Mountain Top vacation. July is the warmest month with highs near 81°F and comfortable nights around 59°F, perfect for swimming at Lake Jean in Ricketts Glen. September and early October bring jaw-dropping fall foliage across the Poconos with daytime highs in the 60s and 70s, and it's the local insider's favorite season because crowds thin out and campsites get cheaper. Winters here are genuinely cold (January averages 19 to 31°F) with about 50 days of snow per year and 10 inches of total snowfall, so most campgrounds close from November through March. Pro tip: book mid-September for the best mix of weather, color, and availability.
weather.gov/bgm/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Mountain Top?
You've got this, and you won't be alone. First time renting an RV in Mountain Top is easier than people expect because every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, slide-outs, dumping tanks, and propane. If you're nervous about size, start with a Class B campervan or a smaller 20 to 25 foot travel trailer, both very manageable on Route 309 and the local back roads. Stick to daylight driving your first day, take the truck route around downtown Wilkes-Barre, and use I-80 or I-81 for longer hauls (both pass right through). Pro tip: book delivery for your first rental so the host parks and sets up the rig, you just enjoy it.
penndot.pa.gov/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You are covered. 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RV rental in Mountain Top, PA as part of your renter protection plan. Whether it is a flat tire on Route 437, a dead battery at a Hickory Run trailhead, or a tow needed on I-81, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also your first-line resource and is usually quick to respond by message if something simple comes up, like figuring out the water heater switch. The RVezy support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's roadside contact card at pickup so you have the number handy without cell service in the mountains.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best road trips from Mountain Top, PA?
You're in a fantastic launch pad for an RV road trip from Mountain Top. Top routes include: Jim Thorpe and Lehigh Gorge State Park (35 miles south, scenic river town and bike trails); Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (60 miles east, waterfalls and river beaches); Ricketts Glen State Park (45 miles north, 22 waterfalls); Watkins Glen and the Finger Lakes in New York (about 130 miles north for wineries and gorges); and Gettysburg (170 miles south for Civil War history). Cross-border travel into New York, New Jersey, and Maryland is allowed on most rentals, just confirm with your host. Mexico travel is not permitted. Pro tip: an easy 3-night loop hits Jim Thorpe, the Pocono Raceway area, and the Delaware Water Gap.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Mountain Top RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's easy to budget. Pennsylvania gas prices typically sit around $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon, with diesel a bit higher. A Class B campervan gets 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and bigger Class A rigs land around 6 to 9 MPG. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, expect to spend $90 to $130 on gas. Pro tip: fuel up at the larger Pilot and Sheetz stations along I-81 in Hazleton or Pittston, they have RV-friendly pumps with higher canopies and easier pull-throughs than the smaller stations on Route 309 in Mountain Top.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Mountain Top?
Earlier is better, especially for summer weekends. Pennsylvania state parks like Hickory Run, Ricketts Glen, and Frances Slocum take reservations through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and prime sites for July, August, and fall foliage weekends can be gone six to nine months ahead. Private campgrounds like Moyers Grove and Council Cup typically book three to four months out for peak weekends. For shoulder season (late April to mid-June, mid-September to October), two to four weeks of lead time usually works. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, watch for cancellations on the PA state parks reservation system, openings pop up often within two weeks of the date.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Mountain Top, PA?
Driving here is straightforward as long as you respect the terrain. Mountain Top sits at about 1,800 feet elevation on the Wyoming Valley plateau, so you'll climb and descend on Route 309 (the main route up from Wilkes-Barre) which has a steep grade, use lower gears on the way down. I-80 and I-81 both pass within 15 minutes and are wide, well-maintained interstates ideal for first-time RVers. Winter brings real snow and ice from December through March, which is why most rentals run May through October. Watch for sudden mountain fog at higher elevations and deer at dawn and dusk. Pro tip: avoid the narrow back roads through Penobscot Mountain after dark, stick to numbered routes for stress-free driving.
511pa.com/What amenities and hookups can I expect at campgrounds near Mountain Top?
You'll find a good mix of options. Private parks like Moyers Grove Campground and Council Cup Campground offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer) plus Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Pennsylvania state parks such as Hickory Run and Frances Slocum mostly provide electric-only sites with shared water spigots and centralized dump stations, a great fit for a self-contained RV. Most parks include picnic tables, fire rings, and clean bathhouses with hot showers. For dumping and fresh water on the road, the Flying J in Bartonsville (about 40 minutes east on I-80) has a public RV service lane. Pro tip: fill your fresh tank before leaving Mountain Top, state park spigots can be a hike from your site.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat features and amenities come with a Mountain Top RV rental?
More than you would expect. A typical campervan rental Mountain Top guests book comes equipped with a queen or full bed, a kitchenette with fridge, stove, sink, and cookware, a wet bath with toilet and shower, heating and air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Larger Class C and Class A motorhomes add bunk beds, dinettes that convert to sleeping, generators, outdoor TVs, awnings, and sometimes outdoor kitchens. Travel trailers and fifth wheels work great if you already have a tow vehicle. Wi-Fi hotspots and solar panels are common add-ons. Pro tip: check the listing's 'Sleeps' count and bed layout carefully if you are traveling with kids, the queen-over-cab bunk in Class C rigs is a family favorite.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mountain%20Top%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons can I get and how does pickup work?
Hosts in Mountain Top make customizing your trip easy. Common add-ons include camping chairs, outdoor grills, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, kayaks, and Wi-Fi hotspots, typically $10 to $50 each. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a nearby meeting point, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included so you understand every system. If you would rather skip driving entirely, RV delivery is offered by many hosts, often free within 25 miles of Mountain Top. Mileage policies and any pet fees are listed clearly on each listing before you book, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a linen package and you have basically got a fully-stocked vacation rental on wheels.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mountain%20Top%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. At booking you are charged the trip total (nightly rate, service fee, taxes, and your selected protection plan). A refundable security deposit, typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, is placed as a temporary hold separate from your booking payment and released after the trip if there is no damage and the RV comes back clean with empty tanks. To avoid issues: take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and return, refuel before drop-off, and follow the host's tank dumping instructions. Pro tip: ask your host where the nearest dump station is during the walkthrough.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Mountain Top during winter or cold weather?
Yes, winter RV rentals are possible in Mountain Top, PA, and they're an underrated adventure. A handful of hosts keep their rigs available year-round with four-season packages, including heated and enclosed holding tanks, propane furnaces, and shore power compatibility for cold-weather hookups. Ricketts Glen State Park stays open for winter camping and the frozen waterfalls are a bucket-list view. With January lows around 19°F and regular snow, prep matters: use the campground's shore power for continuous heat, keep the fresh water tank partially filled and use heat tape on hoses, and add an RV skirt if your host offers one. Pro tip: filter for 'four-season' or message hosts directly to confirm winterized features before booking.
