Camping near New Milford, Pennsylvania
New Milford is a small borough in Susquehanna County in the Endless Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, just off Interstate 81 about 30 miles north of Scranton and 25 miles south of Binghamton, New York. The setting is rural and wooded, with rolling hills, small lakes, and the headwaters of the Susquehanna River drainage nearby. The town works well as a base for RV travelers because it sits directly on a major interstate corridor, yet most local campgrounds are within a short drive on quiet county roads.
Private, family-run campgrounds dominate the area and most cater to RVs with hookups, pull-thru sites, and weekend activities. Lakeside Campground and Shore Forest Campground sit closest to town, followed by Shady Rest Campground, Pine Crest Campground, and Guestward Ho Family Campground. For public land, Salt Springs State Park lies about 15 miles west near Montrose and is the only Pennsylvania state park managed by a non-profit, offering rustic tent sites and camping cottages rather than full RV facilities.
Things to do around New Milford
The main draws are water, woods, and waterfalls. Salt Springs State Park is known for towering old-growth hemlocks, many estimated to be over 300 years old, and a rocky gorge cut by Fall Brook with three waterfalls, plus trails through meadows, hemlock forest, and the gorge. Lakeside Campground and Shore Forest Campground put families on the water for swimming, kayaking, and bass and panfish angling. Pine Crest Campground and Shady Rest Campground are quieter, wooded options good for hiking, biking the back roads, and stargazing on clear nights. Guestward Ho Family Campground leans toward planned weekend activities for kids. Day trips include Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, tubing and fishing on the Susquehanna River, and the antique shops and farmers markets in nearby Montrose.

Camping season around New Milford runs roughly from late April through mid-October, with peak demand in July and August. Summer is the busiest tourism stretch, so reserve RV sites at Lakeside Campground, Shore Forest Campground, and the other family parks several weeks ahead for summer weekends and holidays.
Spring is muddy and cool, with snow still possible into April and many private campgrounds not yet open for the season. Summer months tend to be the wettest, driven by afternoon thunderstorms and occasional tropical moisture, so plan for sudden downpours and soft ground at wooded sites. Fall brings the best weather window for many RVers: cool nights, fewer bugs, and hardwood color through late September and October. Snowfall is possible from late fall into early spring, and most private parks close or shift to limited operations after late October. Salt Springs State Park itself is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset, but its rustic sites are best suited to warmer months.
How to book
Private campgrounds near New Milford, including Lakeside Campground, Shore Forest Campground, Shady Rest Campground, Pine Crest Campground, and Guestward Ho Family Campground, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) fill earliest and often require a two- or three-night minimum, so book those well in advance.
For public-land options, most Pennsylvania state park reservations must be made at least 3 days ahead of arrival and can be booked up to 11 months in advance through the state's reservation system, with the booking window opening at noon Eastern. Salt Springs State Park is handled differently because it is operated by a non-profit: overnight reservations for its campsites, camping cottages, or group camping go through the Friends of Salt Springs Park at 570-967-7275 or [email protected]. Verify rig-length limits when booking, since several local parks have tight interior roads.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a rural, small-town feel. New Milford sits right at Interstate 81 Exit 219, so fuel, propane, groceries, and a few diners are easy to reach, but cell coverage thins out on the back roads toward the campgrounds. Most private parks in this area offer 30-amp electric, water, and dump stations; 50-amp service and full sewer hookups are less common, so check before booking a larger rig.
Sites are generally wooded with a mix of gravel and grass pads. Mosquitoes and black flies are active in late spring and early summer near lakes and creeks, so pack repellent. Black bears live in the surrounding hills, so store food and trash properly. At Salt Springs State Park, the 14 rustic campsites are a mix of walk-in and drive-up sites without hookups, with site 8 accommodating campers up to 30 feet and sites 9 through 13 limited to 20 feet or less, so larger rigs should plan for a private campground instead.

Travel trailers typically run about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes average $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A coaches range from $200 to $375 per night. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Milford%2C%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in New Milford, Pennsylvania?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Milford. Pennsylvania does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, even for larger Class A coaches. You need to be at least 25 to be an approved driver on RVezy, and ID verification happens right inside the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your valid home license along with an International Driving Permit. Once that is set, you are cleared to hit Route 11 and start your Endless Mountains adventure.

Every RV rental in New Milford booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-81 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort during checkout (the renter selects the plan, not the host). Roadside assistance covers events like flat tires, lockouts, battery jumps, and towing. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers on the booking page and pick the one that lets you enjoy Salt Springs State Park without second-guessing every gravel turn.

Booking your New Milford RV trip is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy across every listing, not individual hosts. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so you are not left stranded. Northeast PA can throw a surprise snowstorm or summer thunderstorm your way, and RVezy support is there to help you navigate changes. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for Harford Fair week in August.

Spring (April to May) is quieter and great for fishing on the Susquehanna, while winter campers can still find year-round private sites if they want a snowy escape. Pro tip: target the last weekend of September or first weekend of October for peak fall color.

After you book on RVezy, your host meets you at pickup or delivers the RV to your campsite and walks you through every system: water, propane, slide-outs, generator, dump valves, and the basics of driving the rig. Most orientations take 45 to 60 minutes, and you can message your host through the RVezy app throughout the trip with questions. Pro tip: choose a travel trailer or Class C for your first cheap RV rental in New Milford; they are easier to handle than a 35-foot Class A.

Pro tip: save the RVezy roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway so you are never digging through paperwork on the shoulder.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my New Milford RV rental into New York or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from New Milford. You are just a few miles from the New York border, so popular routes include the Finger Lakes (Watkins Glen is about 2.5 hours), the Catskills (around 2 hours east), and Niagara Falls (about 4 hours northwest). The Poconos, Gettysburg, and even Washington DC are all comfortable drives. Cross-border travel into Canada may be permitted by some hosts but requires advance approval and proper documentation; travel into Mexico is not allowed under RVezy's coverage. Pro tip: message your host before booking with your planned route so they can confirm coverage and share tips for your destinations.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a New Milford RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for on a New Milford RV trip. Class B campervans average about 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches typically run 6 to 10 mpg. Use the EIA's weekly retail gasoline prices for the Lower Atlantic region to set a current per-gallon estimate, then multiply by your planned miles divided by mpg. A weekend loop from New Milford to Watkins Glen and back (roughly 250 miles) in a Class C lands in the low to mid three figures in fuel for most trips. Pro tip: fill up in New Milford or Hallstead before heading north into New York, where prices often climb.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near New Milford?
For the best campgrounds near New Milford, plan to book 4 to 8 weeks ahead for summer weekends and at least 3 to 4 months ahead for holiday weekends like Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Pennsylvania State Parks like Lackawanna take reservations through the official PA State Parks reservation system up to 11 months in advance, so set a calendar reminder if you want a prime lakefront site. Private parks in the Endless Mountains generally book directly on their websites or by phone. Pro tip: midweek stays Sunday through Thursday are almost always available last-minute and often come with lower nightly rates.

Local roads like Route 11 and Route 706 are two-lane country highways with gentle grades through the Endless Mountains. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk, and in winter (roughly December through March) be prepared for snow and ice; PennDOT plows main routes promptly but rural roads can stay slick. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Milford%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure on RVezy. You pay the full rental cost (plus any add-ons and taxes) through the platform when you book using a credit or debit card; no cash is exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held on your card shortly before the trip starts and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good condition. Yes, winter RV rental in New Milford is absolutely an option and can be magical. Susquehanna County winters bring snow and cold from December through March, with daytime highs often in the 20s to mid 30s, so you will want a four-season rig with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a working furnace. Some private parks in the area offer year-round sites with electric hookups for cold-weather camping, and nearby Elk Mountain Ski Resort (about 20 minutes away) makes a fantastic ski-and-stay base. Pro tip: filter for RVs with heated tanks and shore power, and message the host to confirm propane is topped off before pickup.
