Campgrounds near Nicholson, Pennsylvania
Nicholson is a small borough in Wyoming County in northeastern Pennsylvania, tucked between Scranton and Binghamton, New York, along U.S. Route 11 and Interstate 81. The town sits in the Endless Mountains and is best known for the Tunkhannock Creek Viaduct, a concrete deck arch bridge that measures 2,375 feet long and towers 240 feet above the creek bed. That landmark, combined with wooded ridges and creek valleys, defines the setting RV travelers will camp in.
Options in the area range from a Pennsylvania state park campground to smaller privately run parks. Lackawanna State Park anchors the region to the south, while Shady Rest Campground, Highland Campgrounds, Shore Forest Campground, and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park offer nearby alternatives with varying amenities.
Most travelers use Nicholson as a base for exploring the Lackawanna Valley, the Susquehanna River corridor around Tunkhannock, and the ski country around Elk Mountain. Cell service can be spotty in the hills, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is wise.
Things to do near Nicholson
The Tunkhannock Viaduct is the signature stop. Drivers can view it from along U.S. Route 11 just outside Nicholson and pass directly under one of the arches. The local community celebrates Nicholson Bridge Day on the second Sunday of September, with a street fair, parade, and other activities.
Outdoor recreation centers on Lackawanna State Park, roughly ten miles north of Scranton. The 198-acre Lackawanna Lake sits at the center of the park, surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails through forest. Boating, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming are popular activities, and a seasonal swimming pool operates in summer.
Further afield, RVers can reach Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, explore the Susquehanna River corridor around Tunkhannock, or head to Elk Mountain for winter skiing.

The camping calendar in this part of Pennsylvania is shaped by cold winters and warm, wet summers. The campground at Lackawanna State Park opens in mid-April and closes in mid-October, with a maximum camping period of 14 consecutive days in the summer season and 21 consecutive days in the off-season. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day and again during fall foliage in late September and October.
Private parks vary in season length, and smaller seasonal parks may close by late October or early November. Spring shoulder season can be muddy and buggy but is quiet and easier to book. Summer brings warm days, humid afternoons, and frequent thunderstorms.
The viaduct area is a popular fall foliage destination, so sites near Nicholson fill quickly on October weekends. Winter travel is possible for RVers heading toward Elk Mountain ski country, but expect snow, ice, and reduced hookup availability at parks that only run partial off-season loops. Confirm winter operation directly with each private operator before arrival.
Booking and reservation rules
Lackawanna State Park is booked through the Pennsylvania state parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. The park itself is open year round, and campsite reservations must be made at least 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Online reservations are available for day use and overnight facilities, or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
The park has announced a multi-year shower house renovation project during which portions of the campground will be temporarily closed while other areas remain open. Impacted sites are blocked on the reservation system, so check availability before booking to see which loops are affected.
Private campgrounds like Shady Rest Campground, Highland Campgrounds, Shore Forest Campground, and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park are booked directly with the operator by phone or website. Off-season stays typically require advance reservations.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Nicholson is hilly and wooded, so sites are often sloped. At Lackawanna State Park, options include tent sites, RV sites with electric hookups, walk-in tent sites, camping cottages, and yurts. Sites sit in forested loops with varying privacy, and some pads are not perfectly level, so bring leveling blocks.
The campground is within walking distance of the lake and swimming pool. Shower houses provide warm showers and flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station is near the campground entrance. Fox Run and Maple Lane loops allow pets at designated sites.
Private parks in the area typically offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service and gravel pads, though amenities vary by operator. Bringing firewood into Pennsylvania from out of state is discouraged due to pest quarantines, so plan to buy local wood on arrival.
