Campgrounds near Noxen, Pennsylvania
Noxen is a small village in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, sitting in the Endless Mountains region between the Susquehanna River and the North Branch Mountain plateau. It puts RV renters within a short drive of two major state park campgrounds and several private options, with public land, waterfalls, and lake fishing all within roughly a 30-minute radius.
Ricketts Glen State Park is comprised of 13,193 acres in Luzerne, Sullivan, and Columbia counties and is the marquee draw to the west. To the south, Frances Slocum State Park consists of 1,035 acres in northeastern Pennsylvania's Luzerne County, with a horseshoe shaped, 165-acre lake popular for boating and fishing. Private campgrounds in the area include Slumber Valley Campground, Highland Campgrounds, and Council Cup Campground, which offer alternatives when state park sites fill up.
Most travelers base out of Noxen for hiking, paddling, and Susquehanna River access. The mix of state park loops and privately run RV parks makes the area workable for both quick weekend trips and longer multi-park itineraries.
Things to do near Noxen
The headline attraction is the Falls Trail at Ricketts Glen. The trail is a seven-mile loop that takes hikers past 22 stunning waterfalls, and can be slippery due to the presence of water and rocks, so proper hiking boots and caution are advised. The 94-foot Ganoga Falls is the highest of 22 named waterfalls.
On the water, Lake Jean offers a swimming beach with lifeguards on duty at designated times, and non-powered and electric boats are allowed with boat rentals available. Frances Slocum Lake supports kayaking and fishing, and trails accommodate hikers year round with skiing possible in winter. Lake Jean and other park streams are popular for catching a variety of fish including trout, bass, and panfish, and a Pennsylvania fishing license is required.
Cold-weather visitors can add snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing to the mix.

The prime RV window in this part of Pennsylvania runs from mid-April through mid-October, driven mostly by state park schedules. A 100-site campground at Frances Slocum is available from mid-April to mid-October, and five deluxe cottages at Ricketts Glen open in mid-April and close in mid-October. Summer is peak for waterfalls, swimming, and lake use, while early fall brings hardwood color across the ridges and cooler nights.
Winter changes the calculus. The Ricketts Glen Park Campground offers five cottages, 10 cabins, and 120 tent and trailer sites, most of which close for the winter, though a few campsites and all cabins stay available for winter stays. Every winter the Falls Trail closes due to ice and hazardous conditions, and during this time the only persons allowed on the trail are registered ice climbers and experienced hikers with the proper equipment.
The Falls Trail system typically reopens once the ice has melted and park staff have cleared hazards. Plan spring trips accordingly if waterfalls are the goal.
Booking campgrounds near Noxen
Pennsylvania state park sites are handled through a single reservation system. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Make online reservations for day use and overnight facilities or call toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Booking is done through the ReserveAmerica portal linked from the DCNR park pages.
Booking early is recommended during peak seasons, especially for lakeside sites or holiday weekends. Lakefront loops at Ricketts Glen and electric sites at Frances Slocum move first. Private options such as Slumber Valley Campground, Highland Campgrounds, and Council Cup Campground book directly with the operator and are useful backups when state park inventory is gone.
What to expect on arrival
Access roads to Ricketts Glen include some steep grades. The campground sits within the state park, accessible via a steep two-mile climb on an 18% grade that challenges larger RVs, and the campground divides into two distinct areas: a large loop positioned on a peninsula jutting into Lake Jean, and a smaller loop offering full hookups for RVs up to 15 feet with water, sewer, and electric connections. Renters with longer rigs should plan routing carefully and confirm site length before booking.
Facilities at the state parks are modern but basic. Campground amenities include hot showers, restrooms with flush toilets, and a dump station. At Frances Slocum, flush toilets, showers, drinking water, sanitary dump station, and boat launch are available. Gas, groceries, firewood, and other supplies are available in nearby towns, and alcohol is prohibited in all Pennsylvania state parks.
