Camping near Old Forge, Pennsylvania
Old Forge sits in the Lackawanna Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania, just south of Scranton and within easy reach of the Endless Mountains, the Poconos, and the Lackawanna and Susquehanna river corridors. The location gives RV travelers a practical base for exploring state parks, rail-trails, and small towns, with I-81, I-84, and I-380 all within a short drive.
Most overnight options are state park campgrounds and privately owned parks tucked into the surrounding hills. The 1,445-acre Lackawanna State Park is in northeastern Pennsylvania, ten miles north of Scranton, and its 198-acre Lackawanna Lake is surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails winding through forest. Frances Slocum State Park consists of 1,035 acres in Luzerne County, and its horseshoe shaped, 165-acre lake is popular for boating and fishing.
Closer options include Highland Campgrounds and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park, while Lehigh Gorge Campground extends the range southward toward the Lehigh River gorge. Together, these parks cover a mix of forested tent sites, electric RV sites, cabins, and long-stay options.
Things to do around Old Forge
Water-based recreation anchors most trips at Lackawanna State Park, where boating, camping, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming are popular recreation activities. The horseshoe shaped, 165-acre lake is popular for boating and fishing, and is a home to many species of birds, fish, and wildlife at Frances Slocum.
Hikers have miles of trail within a short drive. Frances Slocum State Park offers roughly 14 miles of hiking trails winding through forest, and numerous hiking and mountain biking trails and the large day use area attract visitors to picnic and explore the forests. Lackawanna State Park adds forested loops around the lake and connections to bridle paths.
Off-park attractions include the Steamtown National Historic Site and Electric City Trolley Museum in Scranton, the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail, and the Lehigh Gorge State Park rail-trail to the south, all workable as day trips from a campground base.

State park campgrounds in this area run a defined season, not year-round. The Lackawanna campground opens the second Friday in April and closes October 14. The maximum camping period is 14 consecutive days in the summer season and 21 consecutive days in the off-season. A 100-site campground is available from the mid-April to mid-October at Frances Slocum.
Summer weekends and holidays are the peak. Sites in the popular loops fill months out, so weekend reservations for July and August should be locked in well in advance. Weekday and shoulder-season stays in May, early June, September, and early October are typically easier to book and bring cooler nights and lighter crowds.
Fall foliage in the Endless Mountains and Poconos peaks in October, overlapping the final weeks of the state park season. Winter closes most public campgrounds in the region; RV travelers looking for cold-weather stays should confirm year-round status directly with private parks such as Highland Campgrounds or Benton Hills Mobile Home Park.
How to book campsites near Old Forge
Pennsylvania state parks use a central reservation system. Make online reservations for day use and overnight facilities or call toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival. Campers without a reservation arriving after noon should check at the near the campground entrance for instructions.
At Lackawanna State Park, reservations must be made 3 Day(s) ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 Month(s) in advance for many site types. Pet-friendly and ADA sites are limited and must be selected specifically at booking.
Private parks such as Highland Campgrounds, Benton Hills Mobile Home Park, and Lehigh Gorge Campground each set their own booking windows, deposit rules, and seasonal dates. Contact them directly to confirm rig-length limits, hookups, and cancellation terms.
What to expect on-site
State park campgrounds in this region are modern but rustic. The Lackawanna campground offers forested sites with electric hookups and walk-in tent sites, shower houses with warm showers and flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station is near the campground entrance. Frances Slocum offers 85 tent or trailer sites, some are ADA accessible and some have electric hookups. The 15 walk-in tent sites offer additional privacy.
Expect full-hookup service to be rare in state parks; most sites are electric-only, with water spigots and a central dump station. Sites are wooded, and pads vary in levelness. Pets are allowed only in designated loops, so pet-friendly sites must be reserved specifically.
Bringing firewood into Pennsylvania is prohibited and could result in a citation, so buy or gather firewood locally. Cell service can be unreliable in park interiors; download maps before arrival.

Booking an RV rental in Old Forge through RVezy is low-risk because the cancellation policy is set by RVezy, not by individual hosts. RVezy support is available if you need help with changes.

Yes, many pet-friendly RV rentals in Old Forge are available on RVezy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and message the host to confirm any specific rules, since some allow multiple pets while others have weight or breed limits. Once you are booked, head to Lackawanna State Park, where leashed pets are welcome on trails and in designated campsites. Nay Aug Park in Scranton and the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail are also great for dog-friendly walks. Pack a towel for muddy paws after creek-side strolls, and bring your pet's vaccination records in case the campground requests them at check-in.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lackawanna-state-park.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Old Forge?
Yes, RV delivery is one of the most popular options for renters in Old Forge, especially first-time RVers. Many local hosts on RVezy will tow or drive the RV directly to your campground, whether you are staying at Lackawanna State Park, a private campground in the Poconos, or another nearby site. They will level it, connect water and electric, and walk you through every system before leaving. This is ideal for travelers flying into Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, which is roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive from Old Forge. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host, and many hosts also offer a setup and pack-down package so you can fully relax.
