Camping near Park Crest, Pennsylvania
Park Crest sits in Schuylkill County in Pennsylvania's Anthracite Coal Region, with campgrounds clustered along the wooded ridges and small lakes between Pottsville, Mahanoy City, and Tamaqua. The area draws RV travelers looking for a quieter alternative to the Poconos, with easy access from Interstate 81.
The closest public option is Locust Lake State Park Campground, a Pennsylvania state park with 282 wooded sites around a 52-acre lake. Private options nearby include Lakewood Park Campground in Barnesville, Rosemount Camping Resort, Red Ridge Lake Campgrounds, and Christmas Pines Campground, LLC. Together they cover the full range from full-hookup RV resorts to rustic tent sites.
Most trips here combine on-site lake activities with day drives to Jim Thorpe, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, and Knoebels Amusement Resort. The terrain is forested and hilly, so travelers with larger rigs should check site dimensions before booking, especially at older state park loops.
Things to do around Park Crest
Locust Lake State Park anchors the outdoor options, with fishing, swimming, boat rentals, and hiking trails around the lake, plus a 1.3-mile bike path that circles the water and links to trails through the 1,772-acre park. Lakewood Park Campground opens its 10-acre lake to guests for fishing, kayaking, and paddle boating, with a playground, camp store, and weekend activities on site.
Off-site, families typically drive to Jim Thorpe for the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway and whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River, or head to Knoebels in Elysburg, a free-admission amusement park about an hour west. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is a top fall raptor-migration viewpoint. Yuengling Brewery tours in Pottsville and the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine in Ashland cover the region's industrial history.

The camping season at Locust Lake State Park runs from the start of the Southeast trout season, typically early April, through the third weekend in October. Private parks like Lakewood Park Campground keep cabins available year-round and operate RV sites through much of the year, with reduced services in winter.
Summer is peak season, with warm, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and full campgrounds on weekends. Sites at Locust Lake around holiday weekends often book out months in advance, so early reservations matter. Early fall brings cooler nights and strong foliage, with color typically peaking in early to mid October along the lakeshore.
Winter closes most public sites and services. The state park campground shuts down, boat rentals and the camp store close, and only a limited number of private cabins stay bookable. Spring can be wet and muddy, with steady rain and lingering cold nights through April before conditions settle in May.

How to book campgrounds near Park Crest
Locust Lake State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation system operated by ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance, with the release opening at noon Eastern Time, and reservations can be made up to noon on the day of arrival, either online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Pennsylvania state parks charge no entrance or day-use fee, but campsite fees apply and pets are only allowed at designated sites for an additional fee.
Private campgrounds in the area each use their own booking channels. Lakewood Park Campground books through Campspot, while Rosemount Camping Resort, Red Ridge Lake Campgrounds, and Christmas Pines Campground, LLC take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends fill first, so book those windows early.
What to expect on-site
Locust Lake State Park splits its 282 sites into a tent-only area on the north side of the lake and a trailer-friendly area on the south side, with 88 electric hookup sites and a mix of non-electric, walk-to, and pet-friendly options. Amenities include flush toilets with hot showers, a dump station, three playgrounds, and a camp store near the boat launch with basic supplies, firewood, and boat rentals. Parking spurs range from 20 to 40 feet, and cell service is reported as limited across the campground.
Private options lean more amenity-rich. Lakewood Park Campground offers full 30/50-amp hookups with water, sewer, WiFi, and cable across its 54-acre former amusement-park property, plus luxury, family, and rustic cabins.

Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for non-commercial RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rig listed on RVezy. Approved drivers must generally be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your identity during the booking process. Visiting from overseas? Absolutely, this is great dog country. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Park Crest options, and you can filter directly for Pet-Friendly listings on RVezy before booking. Once you're on the road, your pup will love the trails at nearby Tuscarora State Park and Locust Lake State Park, both of which welcome leashed dogs on hiking paths (pets are not permitted on swimming beaches). Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, about 30 minutes south, also allows leashed dogs on most trails. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, and bring a tie-out, since shaded outdoor space at rural Pennsylvania campgrounds is easy to find.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/TuscaroraStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Park Crest?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery Park Crest service, meaning they will tow or drive the rig directly to your campsite at Locust Lake State Park, Tuscarora State Park, or a private campground like Lakewood Park Campground in Barnesville. They will level the RV, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $5 per mile round-trip from the host's home base. If you're nervous about towing a trailer down winding Route 54 or backing into a tight site, this is the easiest way to enjoy RV camping Park Crest without any of the driving stress.

dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LocustLakeStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Park Crest?
Late May through mid-October is prime time, with a special shout-out to fall. Park Crest sits at about 1,500 feet elevation in the ridge-and-valley region, so summer highs typically run a pleasant 78 to 85 degrees F and nights cool into the 60s: perfect sleeping weather in an RV. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers and trout season. The real magic is late September through mid-October, when the maple, oak, and birch forests around Hawk Mountain and the Schuylkill River turn brilliant red and gold. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary's raptor migration peaks in mid-September, drawing birders from across the country. Book your fall foliage RV rental in Park Crest by July for the best selection.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Park Crest area?
You've got this, and Park Crest is actually an ideal launch pad for first time renting an RV. The roads here are rural and low-traffic, Interstate 81 runs right alongside town for easy highway cruising, and you're far from the white-knuckle congestion of Philadelphia or New York. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and the dump station, and you can text them anytime during the trip. Start with a campervan rental Park Crest or a smaller Class C if you're nervous about size. Pro tip: do a practice loop around the parking lot at Cabela's in Hamburg before heading to camp, it's a flat, oversized lot that's perfect for getting comfortable.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat if my RV breaks down during my Park Crest trip?
You're never alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering tows, flat tires, jump-starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. Whether you're parked at Locust Lake State Park or stopped along Interstate 81 near Hazleton, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for any quirks specific to their rig, like how a finicky slide-out works, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Most trips go smoothly, but knowing backup is built in lets you relax and enjoy the ride.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Park Crest RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to interstate travel, and often yes to Canada too. From Park Crest, you can easily explore New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and Virginia with no extra paperwork, and your RVezy protection follows you throughout the continental U.S. Heading north to Niagara Falls or Quebec? Many hosts allow Canadian travel: just confirm with your host through RVezy's message system before booking so coverage and paperwork are squared away. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular cross-border routes from Park Crest include the Catskills (about 3 hours), the Adirondacks (about 5 hours), and the Maryland coast (about 4 hours).
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on my Park Crest RV trip?
Fuel is the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's manageable. Expect 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 12 to 18 MPG for a travel trailer behind a truck, and 18 to 22 MPG for a campervan rental Park Crest. Pennsylvania gas prices in the Schuylkill County area generally run around $3.30 to $3.70 per gallon for regular, with diesel slightly higher. Sheetz and Wawa locations along Route 309 in Tamaqua and Hometown are typically among the most competitive. Fill up before heading deep into state forest areas, since stations get sparse north of Interstate 80.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Park Crest?
Book early and you'll have your pick. Pennsylvania state parks like Locust Lake and Tuscarora open reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official DCNR reservation system, and summer holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often sell out within hours. For fall foliage weekends in late September and early October, aim to book by July. Private campgrounds like Lakewood Park Campground take reservations year-round and tend to be more flexible. For weekday or shoulder-season trips, you can often find sites a week or two out. If Locust Lake is full, check Hickory Run State Park nearby, which has great availability and similar scenery.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Park Crest?
Generally easy with a few things to know. Park Crest sits in the ridge-and-valley terrain of the Appalachians, so you'll deal with rolling hills and the occasional steep grade on routes like PA-309 and PA-54, but nothing extreme. Interstate 81 is well-maintained and the main artery for getting in and out. Winter (December to March) can bring snow and ice, especially on secondary roads, so most RV trips here run April through November. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially in October and November, Schuylkill County has one of the highest deer-vehicle collision rates in Pennsylvania. Avoid driving large rigs through the narrow, hilly streets of old coal towns like Centralia or downtown Mahanoy City, stick to numbered routes.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds around Park Crest?
Pennsylvania campgrounds near Park Crest range from rustic to full-service, so you can pick your comfort level. Locust Lake State Park offers electric hookups (most sites 30-amp), modern restrooms with hot showers, a dump station, and a potable water fill station. Tuscarora State Park is more basic with no individual electric, ideal for self-contained RVs. Private parks like Lakewood Park Campground and Mountain Springs offer full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, laundry, and camp stores. Cell signal is solid on Verizon and AT&T throughout most of Schuylkill County. Pro tip: the dump station at Locust Lake is free for registered campers, otherwise the closest public dump is at Hickory Run State Park.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Park Crest?
More than you'd expect, even on entry-level rigs. A typical motorhome rental Park Crest sleeps 4 to 8, with a queen bed, convertible dinette, and bunks or a cab-over berth for the kids. Kitchens come standard with a propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink. Bathrooms include a toilet, shower, and small vanity. Most RVs have air conditioning, propane furnace, a TV, and many include Wi-Fi hotspots or solar setups. Larger Class A and Class C rigs often have onboard generators for boondocking, and every passenger gets a seatbelted seat. Hosts list every feature on the RVezy listing page, so you can match the rig to exactly what your family RV trip Park Crest needs.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Park Crest?
Lots of options to customize your trip. Park Crest area hosts commonly offer add-ons like bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor mats ($15 to $30), generators, propane refills, bike racks, and even pre-stocked firewood. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in Schuylkill or Carbon County, with delivery available to nearby state parks for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by listing but typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra-mile packages available at booking. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a linen package often costs less than you'd expect and turns your rental into a true turn-key experience.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/Pages/default.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, never directly with the host, which protects both sides. You pay your booking total (nightly rate, fees, protection plan, and any add-ons) by credit card through RVezy, and a separate refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before the trip, typically a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the RV. As long as you return the rig in the agreed condition with mileage within limits and a clean dump, the hold is released after the trip. Take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff: it's the easiest way to avoid disputes and keep your Park Crest trip stress-free.
