Campgrounds and RV parks near Penns Creek, PA

Penns Creek is nationally known for fly fishing, with wild brown trout and a well-documented green drake hatch. The Green Drake hatch in late May and early June draws anglers from across the country, with large creamy duns blanketing the water at dusk and triggering aggressive surface feeding from big browns. Tubing, kayaking, and canoeing are popular on the creek itself, and Shady Brook Campground and Boat Rental, LLC provides on-water access for renters. Hiking and wildlife watching center on Bald Eagle State Forest. The 620-acre Poe Valley State Park is surrounded by the 198,000-acre Bald Eagle State Forest, with swimming, boating, and fishing at Poe Lake. Poe Paddy State Park sits at the confluence of Big Poe Creek and Penns Creek, and hikers use the Mid State Trail nearby. Family side trips include Woodward Cave, Penn State's campus in State College, and Amish farm stands along the back roads between Millheim and Middleburg.

The main camping season in central Pennsylvania runs from mid-April through early December at state parks, with private parks generally opening in April and closing by late October or early November. Poe Valley State Park's campground is open mid-April to early December, and Poe Paddy follows a similar window. Late spring is the busiest fishing window. The green drake hatch draws anglers from across the country for a window that typically lasts 2 to 3 weeks around Memorial Day, and sites along the creek book out early. Summer weekends and holidays fill fastest at family parks with pools and planned activities, so reservations several weeks ahead are standard. Fall brings cool nights, October foliage, and archery and rifle deer seasons in surrounding state forest lands. Winter camping options are limited: most private parks near Penns Creek close for the season, and access to Poe Paddy during the winter months may be limited, since winter maintenance is not performed on the park roads or state forest roads that access it.

Roads into the Penns Creek corridor are narrow, winding, and shared with Amish buggies. Drivers of larger motorhomes and fifth wheels should plan routes on state highways such as US 15, PA 45, and PA 235 rather than the smaller forest roads that climb into Bald Eagle State Forest. No paved roads lead to Poe Paddy State Park, so tow vehicles and rigs should be prepared for gravel. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks, so download park maps before your visit. Reservation confirmations should also be saved offline. Expect basic grocery and fuel stops in Millheim, Mifflinburg, and Selinsgrove. Firewood is commonly sold on-site at private parks, and quiet hours are strictly enforced at most campgrounds. Black bears are present in the surrounding forest, so store food and trash accordingly.
