Campgrounds and RV parks near Plains, PA

The lake at Frances Slocum State Park anchors most family days close to Plains, with boating and fishing on the 165-acre horseshoe-shaped lake, plus a seasonal swimming pool open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. A network of hiking and mountain biking trails, including the level Lakeshore Trail, loops through the surrounding forest. South of town, Hickory Run State Park is the region's main hiking hub. Trails lead to Hawk Falls, a 25-foot waterfall, and past old dams and cascades on the Shades of Death Trail. The Boulder Field, a National Natural Landmark, is the park's signature stop, and Sand Spring Lake has a seasonal sand beach. On the Lehigh River, Whitewater Challengers runs guided rafting during dam releases from the Francis E. Walter Dam. The Delaware and Lehigh rail trail through Lehigh Gorge State Park is a flat, scenic option for biking.

Both major state parks near Plains follow the Pennsylvania DCNR camping calendar. The modern campground at Frances Slocum State Park runs from the second Friday in April through the third Sunday in October. Hickory Run State Park operates its modern area on the same schedule, with rustic camping continuing until mid-December and the dump station and other water-dependent facilities closing after the third Sunday in October. Summer weekends fill fastest, especially at Frances Slocum, and popular sites can book months ahead. Dam-release weekends on the Lehigh River drive heavy demand at Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers and Lehigh Gorge Campground from spring through fall, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers schedules releases from the Francis E. Walter Dam. Shoulder-season trips in late April, May, and September through mid-October generally bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations. Winter access continues for day use at both state parks, with ice fishing, sledding, and cross-country skiing possible at Frances Slocum when conditions allow.

Sites at Frances Slocum State Park include a picnic table and fire ring, with flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a sanitary dump station, and a nearby boat launch. The campground has electric and non-electric sites plus 15 walk-in tent sites for more privacy. Alcohol is prohibited in all Pennsylvania state parks. Hickory Run sits in active bear country. Overnight guests are required to store all food and scented items such as toothpaste, deodorant, and dish soap inside a vehicle when away from the site, and garbage goes in the park's bear-proof dumpsters. Cell coverage inside the parks is inconsistent, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is worthwhile. Private rafting-focused campgrounds tend to be louder, with group traffic and evening activity during release weekends. Families looking for a quieter base often pair a Lehigh River day trip with a night at one of the state parks instead.
