Shillington camping overview
Shillington sits in southeastern Berks County, just south of Reading and inside the Schuylkill River corridor. The borough puts RV renters within a short drive of Blue Marsh Lake, Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center, and French Creek State Park, the 7,730-acre largest block of contiguous forest between Washington D.C. and New York City. That geography shapes the camping options: private RV parks in the surrounding farm country, plus state park campgrounds within roughly a half-hour drive.
Closest to town, Sills Campgrounds and Sun Valley RV Campground serve renters who want short transit times and full or partial hookups. Farther out, Adventure Bound Oak Creek (also listed as Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Oak Creek) and Sun Retreats Lancaster County lean toward family resort amenities with pools, playgrounds, and organized activities.
The area works well for renters who want a base for day trips to Lancaster County, the Poconos foothills, and the Philadelphia region without dry camping or long backcountry drives.
Things to do near Shillington
French Creek State Park anchors most outdoor itineraries. The forests, lakes, wetlands and fields are a destination for the people of southeast Pennsylvania to hike, fish, camp and bike, and the habitats are homes to many animals and plants that are rare in this corner of the commonwealth. The park draws hikers, mountain bikers, and paddlers to Hopewell Lake and Scotts Run Lake, and it surrounds Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, a restored 19th-century iron plantation. Blue Marsh Lake, run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, adds a perimeter trail, a swimming beach, and boat launches.
Closer to Shillington, the Schuylkill River Trail carries walkers and cyclists along the river, and Nolde Forest offers shaded, kid-friendly hikes. For rainy days, downtown Reading has the Reading Public Museum and the GoggleWorks arts center. Lancaster County's Amish farm country, outlet shopping, and Dutch Wonderland are within a 45-minute drive.

Southeastern Pennsylvania has four distinct seasons. Summer is the peak RV window: warm, humid, and busy, with average July highs near 29°C (85°F) and thunderstorms building through many afternoons. Weekends at private parks like Sun Valley RV Campground and Sun Retreats Lancaster County book well in advance from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and holiday weekends often fill months out.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV renters who prefer cooler nights and open sites. April through early June brings wildflowers, migrating songbirds, and green trails; late September through October delivers the region's strongest foliage, particularly through French Creek State Park and along the Schuylkill.
Winter is quiet. Many private campgrounds close or shift to limited service between late October and early April, while French Creek's cabins can be reserved year round. Snow, ice, and freezing overnight temperatures are common, so water hookups may be winterized even at parks that stay open.

Booking campsites near Shillington
Private parks handle their own reservations directly. Sills Campgrounds, Sun Valley RV Campground, Adventure Bound Oak Creek, and Sun Retreats Lancaster County take bookings by phone or through their websites, with deposits typically required at the time of booking. Summer weekends and any holiday should be locked in as early as possible.
For Pennsylvania state parks, including French Creek, reservations run through the DCNR system at pa.gov or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. For RV renters, confirm site length, hookup type, and any big-rig restrictions with the campground before locking in dates.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain around Shillington is rolling ridge-and-valley country, so expect some grades on the approach to French Creek State Park and the wooded private parks north and east of town. Sites at private resorts are generally level with full or partial hookups; state park sites include wooded tent and trailer sites, some with electric hook-ups, and modern restroom facilities with warm showers, with a central dump station.
Cell service is reliable in the boroughs and along main highways but can drop inside French Creek and around Blue Marsh Lake. Bring a paper map or download offline directions before leaving town.
Bears are present but uncommon; standard food storage rules apply. Ticks are active from spring through fall, mosquitoes peak mid-summer, and firewood should be bought locally to avoid moving invasive pests like spotted lanternfly.

rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Shillington RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Shillington. Popular routes include the Jersey Shore (about 2.5 hours to Cape May), the Finger Lakes in New York (4 hours), the Outer Banks of North Carolina (7 hours), and Acadia in Maine (9 hours). Cross-border trips to Canada are sometimes allowed depending on the host and the insurance on the vehicle, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a Niagara Falls loop through upstate New York is a classic week-long Shillington RV trip.
cbp.gov/travelWhat kind of fuel economy and gas costs should I budget for?
Realistic fuel budgeting makes your Shillington RV trip smoother. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A's around 6 to 8 MPG, campervans 14 to 18 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer 10 to 13 MPG. Regular gas in the Reading area generally runs a bit above the national average due to Pennsylvania's fuel taxes. For a 4-night trip averaging 300 miles, budget roughly $120 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: the Wawa and Sheetz stations along Route 222 and I-78 have plenty of room for big rigs and easy diesel access.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Shillington?
For Pennsylvania state parks like French Creek and Nockamixon, reservations through the Pennsylvania DCNR system open up to 11 months ahead, and summer weekends genuinely sell out by spring. Private parks like Blue Rocks, Mountain Springs, and Robin Hill usually accept reservations 6 to 12 months out, with holiday weekends gone first. Mid-week stays are far easier to grab last-minute. Pro tip: if your dream French Creek site is taken, check the reservation site daily, cancellations free up regularly, especially 2 to 3 weeks before peak weekends.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhat are local driving conditions like around Shillington?
Driving around Shillington is refreshingly manageable. The town sits just southwest of Reading along Route 222 and Route 724, with mostly flat to gently rolling terrain through Berks County farmland. Avoid driving a tall RV through downtown Reading's older streets and the Penn Street Bridge area; instead, take Route 222 or US-422 to skirt the city. Watch for Amish horse-and-buggy traffic on rural roads heading toward Lancaster County. Winter can bring snow and ice from December to February. Pro tip: PennDOT's 511PA app shows live road conditions and is gold for planning around I-78 weather or PA Turnpike construction.

French Creek State Park has electric (30/50 amp) sites with central water fill and a dump station, while private parks like Mountain Springs, Blue Rocks, and Robin Hill provide full hookups (water, electric, and sewer at the site), Wi-Fi, laundry, and camp stores. You'll find dump stations at virtually every campground in Berks County, plus public ones at some Pilot/Flying J stops near I-78. Potable water fills are standard at park entrances. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter, that combo covers nearly every site you'll encounter.

More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Shillington sleeps 4 to 8 across a mix of queen beds, bunks, and convertible dinettes, with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi hotspots, solar, and backup cameras show up on newer rigs. Campervan rentals in Shillington are more compact but still include sleeping, cooking, and often a wet bath. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Shillington, Wyomissing, or Mohnton, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies range from a set nightly allowance to unlimited mileage, and generator hours typically include a few free per night. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a kitchen kit on your first booking, you'll roll into French Creek totally ready to cook s'mores without a single store run.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shillington%2C+PennsylvaniaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card when you book, no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and pre-authorized on your card before pickup, then released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape and the tanks were handled per the agreement. To avoid surprises on your Shillington RV rental, do a thorough walkthrough video at pickup and dropoff with the host. Pro tip: confirm cleaning fees and dump-tank policies upfront, those two items cause the majority of deposit disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there great road trip routes from Shillington for a first big adventure?
So many. From Shillington, the Pocono Mountains are about 90 minutes north (great for Jim Thorpe, Lehigh Gorge, and Bushkill Falls), Lancaster's Amish Country is 45 minutes southwest, Gettysburg is about 2 hours west, and the Jersey Shore at Cape May is 2.5 hours southeast. For a longer Shillington RV trip, loop north to the Finger Lakes (4 hours) or south through Shenandoah National Park (4 hours). Pro tip: a 5-day Berks-to-Poconos-to-Finger-Lakes loop hits French Creek, Promised Land State Park, and Watkins Glen, three of the prettiest campgrounds in the Northeast, in one unforgettable run.
