Campgrounds near Silkworth, Pennsylvania
Silkworth is a small census-designated place in Lehman Township, Luzerne County, sitting along Pennsylvania Route 29 on the west shore of Lake Silkworth, about 10 miles northwest of Nanticoke. The area lies in the ridge-and-valley country west of Wilkes-Barre, at roughly 1,180 feet of elevation, which keeps summer temperatures a few degrees cooler than the Susquehanna Valley below.
RV travelers have a mix of private and state-park options within a short drive. Council Cup Campground and Moyers Grove Campground sit closest to town, with Bodnarosa Campground a bit further out; all three are private grounds oriented toward RV and trailer stays. For public land, Frances Slocum State Park is a 1,035-acre woodland park in Luzerne County built around a 165-acre horseshoe-shaped lake, roughly a 20-minute drive from Silkworth.
The headline destination in the region is Ricketts Glen State Park, west of the town. Ricketts Glen spans 13,050 acres across Luzerne, Sullivan and Columbia counties, and its 22 named waterfalls draw campers from across the Mid-Atlantic.
Things to do near Silkworth
Waterfall hiking is the region's marquee activity. The Falls Trail is a roughly seven-mile loop system in Ricketts Glen that visits both the upper and lower glens and passes 21 of the park's 22 named waterfalls, with steep stone steps that reward strong hikers and older kids. Ganoga Falls, the tallest, drops 94 feet.
On the water, the 245-acre Lake Jean sits above the Falls Trail and offers a swimming beach, boat launches, and kayak rentals during the warm months. Closer to Silkworth, Frances Slocum Lake is open to fishing and paddling; boating is restricted to electric motors only, which keeps the water calm for families with young paddlers. Mountain biking on roughly 14 miles of trails, picnicking, and the seasonal swimming pool round out day-use options at Frances Slocum.

The main camping window runs mid-April through mid-October. Frances Slocum State Park's 100-site campground operates from the second Friday in April to the third Sunday in October. At Ricketts Glen, sites 1 to 73 and the deluxe cottages open in mid-April and close in mid-October, while selected sites from 74 to 137 remain open year-round for winter camping. The ten modern rental cabins at Ricketts Glen are available year-round.
Summer is peak. Weekends fill first, especially around the Falls Trail, so booking well ahead is essential from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Fall brings strong foliage color across the hardwood ridges and cool nights that are ideal for campfires.
Winter changes the calculus. Every winter the Falls Trail closes due to ice and hazardous conditions; the only persons allowed on the trail are registered ice climbers and experienced hikers with proper equipment, including crampons, an ice ax, rope, and a hiking partner. Most private campgrounds in the area close or run limited services in the coldest months.
How to book
Pennsylvania state parks use a single reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica and the DCNR website. Reservations can be made online for day use and overnight facilities or by calling the Pennsylvania State Parks Reservation Center at 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757). This applies to both Frances Slocum and Ricketts Glen.
Reservations for campsites, cabins, and cottages open 11 months in advance and must be made at least three days ahead of arrival. For summer weekends and any cabin or cottage stay, booking near the 11-month opening is strongly recommended. Sites may still be available on a walk-in basis through the park office when the online window has closed.
Council Cup Campground, Moyers Grove Campground, and Bodnarosa Campground handle bookings directly through each operator, so call or use the campground's own site. Confirm rig length limits and hookup type at booking; not all sites accept large Class A motorhomes.
What to expect on the ground
Hookups vary by park. Ricketts Glen has a modern campground with a mix of non-electric, electric, and full-hookup sites plus pull-thrus, along with an amphitheater, sanitary dump station, and modern restrooms with warm showers. Frances Slocum offers 85 tent or trailer sites, some ADA accessible and some with electric hookups, plus 15 walk-in tent sites, flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a sanitary dump station, and a boat launch. Private grounds in the area more commonly offer full hookups on most sites.
Expect thin cell coverage on the ridges around Ricketts Glen; plan offline maps before arrival. A few rules to note: quiet hours apply overnight, and pets are allowed only at designated sites in the state parks. Stock groceries, firewood, and fuel in Dallas, Hunlock Creek, or Wilkes-Barre before heading out.
