South Temple sits in Muhlenberg Township, Berks County, roughly four miles north of Reading in southeastern Pennsylvania. The area places RV travelers within a short drive of the Blue Mountain ridgeline, the Appalachian Trail, and the farm country of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, with Reading, Kutztown, Lancaster, and the Lehigh Valley all reachable in under an hour.
Private campgrounds dominate the immediate area. Sacony Park Campgrounds in Kutztown offers electric and water hookups, pull-throughs, and cabin rentals on level sites. Blue Rocks Family Campground in Lenhartsville occupies over 100 acres of forest divided by mountain streams and is surrounded by hiking trails, with the Blue Rocks boulder field giving the camp its name. Robin Hill RV Resort and Campground, Sills Campgrounds, and Sun Valley RV Campground round out the closest cluster of options for RV renters.
Blue Marsh Lake, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, sits about seven miles northwest of Reading and is a common day-use anchor for trips based out of these campgrounds, though it does not offer overnight camping itself.
Things to do near South Temple
Blue Marsh Lake anchors most itineraries. The reservoir has a swim beach at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area, three boat launches, and a multi-use trail loop open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. The Appalachian Trail crosses the ridge just north of Lenhartsville, with Hawk Mountain Sanctuary nearby for raptor viewing.
Families staying at Blue Rocks Family Campground can access trails leading directly from the campground to popular spots like The Pinnacle and Pulpit Rock, along with the on-site Blue Rocks boulder field. Kutztown, Reading, and Hamburg add outlet shopping, the Reading Pagoda, and Pennsylvania Dutch farm markets. Koziar's Christmas Village in Bernville draws families during the late-fall and holiday season.

Most private campgrounds in Berks County operate seasonally, typically April through October, which lines up with the practical RV window in southeastern Pennsylvania. Summer is the peak period, with warm, humid weather, full activity schedules, and pools open at family campgrounds.
Spring brings unpredictable rain and cool nights, but wildflowers, migrating raptors at Hawk Mountain, and quieter sites. Fall is often the best window for RV travel in the region: dry stretches, cool evenings, and hardwood color across the Blue Mountain ridgeline through mid to late October. Halloween-themed weekends run at several family campgrounds.
Winter camping options are limited. French Creek State Park, southeast of Reading, is one of the few public campgrounds in the area that stays open year-round, while most private parks close for the cold season. Snow and freezing rain are common from December through February.

How to book campgrounds near South Temple
Private campgrounds around South Temple are booked directly with each operator by phone or through their websites. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill first, especially holiday weekends and themed event weekends at family parks like Blue Rocks Family Campground and Robin Hill RV Resort and Campground. Reservations at Blue Rocks require a two-night minimum, and holiday or weekend reservations require a three-night minimum. Booking two to three months ahead is realistic for summer Saturdays; midweek and shoulder-season stays are usually easier.
For Pennsylvania state park sites, reservations run through the state's ReserveAmerica-powered system or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival, with unreserved sites available on a first-come, first-served basis.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain around South Temple is rolling farmland broken by wooded ridges. Sites at Blue Rocks Family Campground sit on the side of a mountain, so RV renters should ask about site grade, size, and hookup type when booking; the campground has a smaller number of full-hookup pads and some tent areas that suit smaller rigs better than large trailers.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near Reading and the Route 222 corridor but can drop in wooded valleys and along the Blue Mountain ridge. Summer thunderstorms are common and can move through quickly, so plan for wet awnings and muddy pads. Black bears are present in the wider region, so standard food storage practices apply.
There are no entrance fees or day use fees for any state park in Pennsylvania, which makes day trips to French Creek State Park or nearby lakes an easy add-on from any base campground.
