Campgrounds near Steelton
Steelton sits along the Susquehanna River just south of Harrisburg in Dauphin County, placing RV travelers within an easy drive of state parks, private resorts, and family-oriented campgrounds across south-central Pennsylvania. The area works well as a base for Hershey attractions, Lancaster County day trips, Gettysburg, and river recreation.
The closest full-service option is Harrisburg East Campground, a year-round park east of the city with pull-through sites and full hookups. Families heading to the amusement park often choose Hersheypark Camping Resort in Hummelstown, which runs a shuttle to Hersheypark, or the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday, a wooded property a short drive from the park.
For a more traditional outdoor stay, Gifford Pinchot State Park in northern York County offers one of the largest state-run campgrounds in Pennsylvania on the shore of 340-acre Pinchot Lake. Camp Hebron, a nonprofit Christian campground in Halifax north of Harrisburg, adds a quieter, wooded option with lake and creek access along the Appalachian Trail corridor.
Things to do near Steelton
Hersheypark anchors most family itineraries, with roller coasters, water rides, and live entertainment a short drive from any of the nearby campgrounds. Adjacent stops include ZooAmerica, Hershey's Chocolate World, Hershey Gardens, and the Hershey Story Museum. Downtown Harrisburg adds the State Capitol, the National Civil War Museum, and the Susquehanna riverfront trail.
On the water, Pinchot Lake at Gifford Pinchot State Park supports boating with electric motors, fishing, swimming at the Quaker Race beach, and paddling from spring through fall. Camp Hebron sits near Mountain View Lake and Powell's Creek for fishing and small-craft use.
Day trips extend to Lancaster County Amish farmland, the Appalachian Trail crossings north of Harrisburg, Gettysburg National Military Park, and factory tours across York County.

Central Pennsylvania has a four-season humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, sometimes snowy winters. Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Hersheypark is fully operational and lake campgrounds are busiest. Weekend sites at Hersheypark Camping Resort and the Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday routinely fill weeks in advance during summer and around fall event weekends.
The Gifford Pinchot State Park campground operates from mid-April through late October, and Camp Hebron's campground is open from mid-April to mid-October. Fall foliage brings a second surge of bookings across York and Dauphin counties, so travelers should reserve well ahead for October weekends.
Harrisburg East Campground stays open year-round, making it the practical choice for late-fall, winter, and early-spring trips when seasonal parks have shut down.

How to book
State park sites at Gifford Pinchot are reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks system on ReserveAmerica, with bookings available up to 11 months in advance. Reservations open at noon Eastern time on the release date, and lakeside sites tend to go first for summer weekends.
Hersheypark Camping Resort books directly through Hershey Entertainment and Resorts, and package rates often bundle park tickets and shuttle access. The Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday takes reservations through the KOA website or app, and Harrisburg East Campground books through its own site or by phone.
Camp Hebron reserves campsites online through its website. Campground stays require a minimum of 2 nights and a maximum of 10 consecutive nights, and the campground is pet and alcohol free, which matters for RV travelers with dogs.
What to expect on site
Site style varies widely across the area. Hersheypark Camping Resort is a large, activity-heavy park with pools, a game room, and a shuttle to the amusement park; big-rig drivers should note that some sites can be tight for backing in. The Elizabethtown / Hershey KOA Holiday spreads across a wooded property with a mix of RV pads, cabins, and tent sites.
Each Gifford Pinchot site includes a macadam pad, picnic table, and fire ring, with modern bathhouses and sanitary dump stations available. Most sites offer electric hookups and a smaller number include full hookups.
Camp Hebron has 38 campsites in wooded areas, with 11 full-hookup RV sites, additional electric sites, and primitive tent sites. Amenities include a heated bathhouse, seasonal pool, covered pavilion, and dump station, though sites sit close together and group bookings are common in summer.

PennDOT only requires a non-commercial Class B license for single vehicles over 26,000 pounds, and the Class A, B, C motorhomes and travel trailers on RVezy almost always fall well under that threshold. pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Steelton?
Late April through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping Steelton travelers love, but every season has its charm. Spring (April to May) brings 55 to 70 degree days and dogwoods blooming along the Susquehanna. Summer (June to August) hits 80 to 90 degrees with high humidity, ideal for Hersheypark and lake swimming at Gifford Pinchot. Fall (mid-September through late October) is a local favorite: crisp 50 to 70 degree days, excellent foliage along Route 30 toward Gettysburg, and the AACA Fall Meet in Hershey. Winter dips into the 20s and 30s with occasional snow; many campgrounds close November through March, while a handful of year-round parks stay open for off-season deals.
weather.gov/ctp/I have never rented an RV before. Is it really this easy?
Yes, and you are going to be fine. First time renting an RV is a normal moment for the majority of Steelton bookings, and every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery if they bring it to you). They walk you through propane, fresh water, gray and black tanks, generator, slide-outs, and the dashboard before you turn a key. Choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental Steelton if you are nervous about size; they drive much like a large van. Most central PA highways (I-83, I-81, Route 322) are well-marked and RV-friendly. You can message your host any time during the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down on my trip?
Take a deep breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you blow a tire on the PA Turnpike, the generator quits at Pine Grove Furnace, or the slide-out gets stuck at Hersheypark Camping Resort, help is one phone call away. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, they know their RV better than anyone and can often troubleshoot smaller issues on the spot. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway and travel with total confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the best RV road trip from Steelton?
An RV road trip from Steelton can go in five gorgeous directions. Head west on Route 30 to Gettysburg (45 miles) for Civil War history, then continue to Cowans Gap State Park for a swim. Drive northeast on I-78 to the Poconos (110 miles) for waterfalls and Lake Wallenpaupack. Take I-83 south to Washington D.C. (130 miles) for the Smithsonian and a stop at Codorus State Park. Cruise east on US-30 through Lancaster's Amish country (35 miles) for buggies and farmstands. Or run north on US-15 to Williamsport and the Pennsylvania Wilds (90 miles). Cross-border trips into Maryland, West Virginia, New York, or New Jersey are fine on most rentals; trips to Canada need host approval, and travel to Mexico isn't permitted.
visitpa.com/regions/dutch-country-roadsWhat kind of fuel mileage will I get, and how much should I budget for gas?
Realistic numbers help you budget like a pro. Class B campervans get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, Class A motorhomes get 6-10 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer averages 9-12 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average because of state fuel taxes, so check GasBuddy near Steelton's Routes 230 and 441 before filling up; Sheetz and Rutter's stations along Eisenhower Boulevard are usually competitive. For a 4-day, 400-mile trip from Steelton to Gettysburg, Lancaster, and back in a Class C, plan roughly $150-$200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up off-turnpike for noticeably better prices.
energy.gov/eere/vehicles/fuel-economyHow far ahead should I book a campground near Steelton?
Book sooner than you'd think. Pennsylvania state parks like Gifford Pinchot, Pine Grove Furnace, and Codorus open reservations 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and the prime summer Saturday sites near Steelton vanish fast, especially Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends. Hersheypark Camping Resort and Gettysburg / Battlefield KOA fill 3-6 months ahead for summer weekends. For shoulder-season trips in May or late September, you can often grab a great spot 2-4 weeks out. Pro tip: if your dream park is full, check Tuesday and Wednesday for last-minute cancellations, they pop up constantly. Reserve the campground before you finalize your RV booking so dates line up perfectly.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Steelton?
Driving around Steelton is genuinely RV-friendly. The town sits right on I-83 and just minutes from I-81, US-322, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76), all wide, well-maintained highways built for big vehicles. Watch for the Susquehanna River bridges (especially I-83 over the river into Harrisburg) on windy days, take it slow. Avoid driving directly through downtown Harrisburg during weekday rush hour; the Capitol Complex streets are narrow with low-clearance underpasses. In winter, central PA gets ice storms and snow squalls between December and March, so check PennDOT's 511PA before heading out. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly; pull over if you can't see the lane lines.
511pa.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Steelton?
Campgrounds near Steelton run the full spectrum, so you can pick your comfort level. Private parks like Hersheypark Camping Resort and Jonestown/Hershey KOA typically offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, pools, and on-site dump stations. Pennsylvania state parks like Gifford Pinchot and Pine Grove Furnace usually offer electric-only or modern non-hookup sites with potable water spigots and centrally located dump stations, plus restrooms with flush toilets and showers in season. Need to dump or fill water mid-trip? Most state parks let day-users use the dump station for a small fee. Bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose, a sewer hose, and leveling blocks just in case.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs I'll find in Steelton?
More than you might expect. Most motorhome rental Steelton listings include a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunks (some sleep 6-8), a full kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and sink, plus a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet. Expect roof-mounted air conditioning, a propane furnace for chilly Pennsylvania nights, seatbelts at every designated passenger seat, an awning, and often a flat-screen TV. Many hosts include a generator for off-grid power and outdoor cooking gear. Wi-Fi varies, central PA has solid cellular along I-83, so a phone hotspot works well at most campgrounds. Each listing photo and amenity list spells out exactly what's included, no guessing.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Steelton RV rental?
Plenty, and they make family RV trip Steelton planning a breeze. Common add-ons on RVezy include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits with pots, dishes, and utensils, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and even pre-stocked groceries from some hosts. Delivery and setup to your campground is the most popular add-on around Steelton. Pickup and dropoff usually happen at the host's home (typically in Steelton, Harrisburg, Hershey, or Middletown), and many offer Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) meet-ups. Mileage policies vary by listing, so review your daily allowance and per-mile overage rate before booking, then add extra miles if you are planning a longer loop.
flyhia.com/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through RVezy, no cash, no checks, no awkward driveway transactions. You pay with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, and the platform securely processes everything. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment; the exact amount is shown on each listing and depends on the RV and the renter protection plan you select. As long as you return the RV in the same condition you received it (fuel topped off, tanks emptied if required, no new damage), the deposit hold is released after the trip. Snap a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, it protects everyone.
