Campgrounds near Sugar Notch
Sugar Notch sits in Luzerne County in northeastern Pennsylvania, a few miles south of Wilkes-Barre on the eastern edge of the Wyoming Valley. The area puts RV travellers within reach of two very different landscapes: the lakes, forests and hiking trails around the Susquehanna Valley to the north and west, and the Pocono Mountains and Lehigh Gorge to the south and east.
Campgrounds within a short drive cover the full range of RV needs. Frances Slocum State Park offers a state-run modern campground on a 165-acre horseshoe-shaped lake, while Moyers Grove Campground and Council Cup Campground are private parks with hookups, pools or swimming holes, and family activities. Toward the Poconos, Lehigh Gorge Campground and the Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers cater to rafting and rail-trail visitors.
Road access is straightforward via I-81 and I-80, and most parks in the area sit within a half-hour to hour drive of Sugar Notch. Cell service can be spotty inside state parks and rural private grounds, so downloading maps before arrival is recommended.
Things to do near Sugar Notch
Water recreation anchors most trips. Frances Slocum has a horseshoe-shaped, 165-acre lake popular for boating and fishing, and campers can use the park swimming pool since lake swimming is not permitted. Council Cup Campground has a 1.5-acre stocked trout stream and swimming at the base of a 25-foot waterfall, plus miles of hiking trails. Moyers Grove features a solar-heated in-ground pool and catch-and-release fishing ponds, plus mini golf.
South of Sugar Notch, the Lehigh Gorge corridor delivers whitewater rafting and a popular flat rail-trail ride along the D and L Trail through Lehigh Gorge State Park. Hickory Run State Park sits within reach for boulder fields, waterfalls and longer hikes, and Frances Slocum offers roughly 14 miles of trails.

The main camping season in this part of Pennsylvania runs mid-April through mid-October. Frances Slocum State Park's campground opens in mid-April and closes in mid-October, and the Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers operates its shower facilities on a similar schedule. Council Cup Campground is open from April through November, while Moyers Grove markets year-round access.
Summer is peak season. July is typically the warmest and busiest month, with families filling weekend sites and dam-release rafting weekends drawing crowds to the Lehigh. Reserving several weeks ahead is advisable for state park sites and any holiday weekend.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Fall brings hardwood colour through the ridges and gorges, and private campgrounds hold themed weekends into October and November. Winter closes state park camping in the area and most private grounds shift to limited services, so expect freezing conditions and reduced amenities.

This was our family’s first time renting an RV after years of tent camping, and it was a great experience overall. Michael was an excellent host. He delivered the RV to our campsite, had everything set up and ready to go, and took the time to explain how everything worked. As first-time RV renters, that made the experience stress-free and much less intimidating. The RV itself was exactly what we needed for our family of four. It was spacious enough to sleep comfortably, kept us cool during the hot weather, kept us dry through the rain, and everything worked as expected. We spent most of our time outdoors and primarily used the RV for sleeping, and it was perfect for that. The only reason I’m mentioning this is so future renters know what to expect. When we first arrived, there was a noticeable odor inside the RV. As the trip went on, it seemed to be coming from the bathroom/holding tank area. When I mentioned it to Michael at pickup, he was very open about it and explained that it’s something he has to deep clean every few rentals to eliminate the smell. I appreciated his honesty, but since it’s a known issue rather than a one-time occurrence, I think it’s fair for future renters to be aware of it. Other than that, we had a fantastic experience. Michael was friendly, responsive, and easy to work with, and I wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again

Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Moyers Grove and Council Cup take reservations by phone or through their websites. Onsite camping at the Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers is generally tied to booking a rafting or inflatable kayaking trip with Whitewater Challengers, so plan the river trip first.

nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for your Sugar Notch RV trip is straightforward. Class B campervans get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8-12 MPG, Class A coaches 6-10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10-14 MPG combined). Pennsylvania gas prices typically hover slightly above the national average, often $3.40-$3.80 per gallon in the Wilkes-Barre area in 2026. For a 200-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan around $70-$90 in fuel. Stations along I-81 and I-80 are RV-friendly with high canopies. Pro tip: GasBuddy combined with the Pilot/Flying J app near Hazleton (15 miles south) routinely saves 20-30 cents per gallon, real money on a 60-gallon tank.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Sugar Notch?
For Pennsylvania state parks like Hickory Run, Frances Slocum, and Ricketts Glen, you can book up to 12 months ahead through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and summer weekends genuinely sell out within hours of opening. For private RV parks like Moyer's Grove or Council Cup, 6 to 8 weeks ahead is usually plenty outside of July 4th, Memorial Day, and Labor Day holidays. Midweek and shoulder-season trips (May, September, October) often have same-week availability. Pro tip: set a reminder for the booking window opening if you want a specific waterfront site at Frances Slocum, locals do exactly this for prime summer Saturdays.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Sugar Notch?
Driving an RV around Sugar Notch is very manageable. The area sits just off Interstate 81, a wide, modern highway, and most routes to Pocono campgrounds use four-lane US-209 or I-80. Expect rolling mountain grades, occasional tight switchbacks on PA-118 toward Ricketts Glen, and a few low railroad bridges in old coal-region towns, always know your rig's height. Winter brings snow and salt November through March, so most rentals operate April through October. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk on rural routes. Pro tip: take I-80 west rather than older PA-115 when heading toward Williamsport, it adds 10 miles but saves you a serpentine climb over the Pocono Plateau in a tall motorhome.

Private parks like Moyer's Grove, Council Cup, and Lehigh Gorge Campground offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, dump stations, and hot showers. Pennsylvania state parks (Hickory Run, Frances Slocum, Ricketts Glen) provide 30-amp electric at many sites, central water spigots, modern restrooms, and dump stations, but typically no sewer at the site. Most campgrounds have on-site fresh water fills and free dumping for registered guests. Pro tip: Hickory Run's dump station is open to the public for a small fee, handy if you're returning your rig to a Sugar Notch host with empty tanks.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/hickory-run-state-park.htmlWhat's included inside a typical Sugar Notch RV rental?
Your motorhome rental in Sugar Notch will come ready to camp. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette and sofa for extra sleepers, air conditioning, a furnace for those cool Pocono nights, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Most rigs sleep 4-8 people. Many hosts include a generator for boondocking at Worlds End State Park, plus extras like a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and even Starlink Wi-Fi on premium listings. Pro tip: read the listing's amenity list carefully, then message the host to confirm linens, cookware, and a starter kit of toilet paper and propane are included so you can roll up empty-handed.
penndot.pa.gov/Pages/default.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
When you rent an RV in Sugar Notch, hosts offer thoughtful add-ons that make your trip smoother: linen and towel packages ($25-$60), camp chairs and outdoor mats ($15-$30), generators ($25-$50/day), bike racks, kayaks, propane refill service, and starter kits with paper goods and dish soap. Pickup is usually at the host's home in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area, with delivery available to most campgrounds within 50 miles. Mileage policies vary by listing, you'll see exactly how many free miles per night before you book. Pro tip: ask for the 'campground package' if the host offers one, bundling linens, chairs, and a generator typically beats picking them à la carte and saves you a Walmart run.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Booking an RV rental in Sugar Notch through RVezy is straightforward and secure. You pay the full trip cost (rental, protection, taxes, and any add-ons) by credit or debit card directly through the platform, with no cash or third-party transfers. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment a few days before pickup, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig, and released after return assuming no damage or policy issues. To keep things smooth, do a video walk-around with your host at pickup and drop-off. Pro tip: return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted on your trip checklist, this is the single biggest reason deposits get partially withheld.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I find a cheap RV rental in Sugar Notch for a quick weekend?
Yes, cheap RV rental in Sugar Notch is absolutely doable, especially if you're flexible. Filter RVezy by price (low to high) and sort for travel trailers, which often start under $100/night in the Wilkes-Barre area. Booking Sunday-through-Thursday nights, choosing a slightly older but well-maintained rig, and picking up rather than paying for delivery all stretch your budget further. A two-night family RV trip to Sugar Notch and nearby Frances Slocum State Park can come in under $400 all-in including the campsite. Pro tip: May and late September weekends are the sweet spot, full Pocono scenery, half the summer prices, and you'll still have hosts competing for your booking with weekly discounts.
