Camping near Sunrise Lake, Pennsylvania
Sunrise Lake sits in Pike County, Pennsylvania, just west of the Delaware River and inside the footprint of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The area is a two to three hour drive from New York City, which makes it one of the busier river-corridor destinations in the Poconos for RV travelers.
Most campgrounds nearby are strung along US Route 209 and the river itself. Dingmans Campground is a 65-acre, 134-site rustic campground located along the Delaware River in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, offering spacious tent sites in old growth forest, riverside spots, and RV sites with water and electric hookups plus central dump stations near the bathhouses. A short drive north near Milford, Kittatinny Campgrounds' River Beach location sits on the Delaware River with over 160 sites built on 18 acres, featuring wooded, open field, and riverfront sites for tent and RV camping.
Kittatinny's K-Camp Campground and River Beach Campsites on the Delaware-Kittatinny Canoes, both operated by Kittatinny Canoes, pair riverfront camping with on-site paddling outfitters, which is useful for renters who want to combine an RV base with tubing, canoe, or raft trips.
Things to do near Sunrise Lake
The Delaware River is the main draw. Kittatinny Canoes runs tubing, kayak, canoe, and raft trips directly from its riverside bases, so RV guests staying at Kittatinny Campgrounds or River Beach Campsites on the Delaware-Kittatinny Canoes can walk from site to launch.
On land, the McDade Recreational Trail runs 32 miles along the Pennsylvania side of the river and passes through Dingmans Campground's front entrance, making it easy to bike or hike straight from a site. The surrounding recreation area also offers hiking to Raymondskill Falls, Dingmans Falls, and access to a section of the Appalachian Trail.
Three public beaches along the river corridor, Smithfield, Milford, and Turtle Beach, have seasonal lifeguards, picnic tables, and restrooms, which are useful stops for families traveling with kids.

The main camping season along this stretch of the Delaware runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Kittatinny's River Beach campground operates on a seasonal schedule, with a typical opening in late April and closing in late October. Dingmans Campground follows a similar spring-to-fall pattern tied to the National Park Service concession season.
July and August are the peak weeks. River outfitters, riverside sites, and RV hookup sites at Kittatinny Campgrounds and Dingmans Campground fill well in advance, and holiday weekends carry minimum-stay requirements. Holiday periods at Kittatinny require a three night minimum stay, with an activity for at least 80 percent of the group. At Dingmans, riverside sites require a two-night minimum on weekends and a three-night minimum on holiday weekends.
Late September and October bring cooler nights and fall color across the Kittatinny Ridge, with lighter crowds midweek. Winter camping is generally not available at these river campgrounds; travelers looking for cold-weather stays should plan for private Pocono RV parks farther inland.
How to book campgrounds near Sunrise Lake
Dingmans Campground takes reservations directly through its own online booking system, which is the preferred method since the campground office phone is not checked regularly. The online platform lets travelers select a site from a map view or by number, and groups larger than the standard site limits are handled by phone or email rather than online.
Kittatinny Campgrounds, Kittatinny's K-Camp Campground, and River Beach Campsites on the Delaware-Kittatinny Canoes are all booked through the Kittatinny Canoes website. Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are accepted based on availability, with the note that not every site or trip is available for walk-ins, especially during the off-season, and that certain days and time periods get very busy.
For summer weekends and holidays, book riverside and RV sites with hookups several months out. Midweek stays and shoulder-season dates are easier to secure and often quieter.
What to expect at Sunrise Lake area campgrounds
Expect rustic, river-oriented campgrounds rather than resort-style parks. RV sites at Dingmans Campground offer 20, 30, and 50 amp electric with water hookups and a central dump station near the bathhouses, and riverfront sites are tent only, with no vehicles allowed to park on those sites.
Connectivity is limited. Dingmans Campground is a dry facility and a cellular dead zone. The Kittatinny river campgrounds have Wi-Fi around their camp stores but weaker coverage at sites. Bring paper maps and download navigation before arrival.
RV renters should note narrow interior roads on some loops and check length limits when booking a larger rig; Dingmans can accommodate rigs up to 50 feet on designated RV sites. General stores, bathhouses, and firewood are available on-site at both Dingmans and the Kittatinny locations.

dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/PromisedLandStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Sunrise Lake in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for a Sunrise Lake RV trip, but each season has its own magic. Summer (June to August) brings warm 75 to 85°F days perfect for swimming and kayaking on the lake. Fall (mid-September through late October) is arguably the showstopper, the Pocono foliage peaks around the second and third weeks of October with crisp 50 to 65°F days. Spring offers quieter campgrounds and wildflowers along the Delaware. Local insider tip: the weekend after Columbus Day usually has the most vivid leaf color and is the smartest time to book if you want fall magic without July crowds.
weather.gov/bgm/I have never rented an RV before, will I be able to handle a trip to Sunrise Lake?
You've got this. A first time renting an RV in Sunrise Lake is genuinely easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, slide-outs, propane, water, and the electrical panel, and you can text them during the trip with questions. The Pike County roads around Sunrise Lake are mostly two-lane country highways with low speeds and gentle grades, ideal for new drivers. Start with a Class B campervan or a smaller Class C motorhome rental in Sunrise Lake, both drive much like a large van. Do a parking lot loop right after pickup to build confidence before hitting Route 739.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Pocono RV road trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, or mechanical issue on Interstate 84 or Route 209 gets handled with one phone call. Your host is also a text away for quick questions, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Cell service can dip in the deep woods of Delaware State Forest, so screenshot your host's number and the roadside assistance number before you leave Sunrise Lake. With backup this solid, most renters never need to use it, which is exactly the point.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Sunrise Lake RV rental into New York or New Jersey?
Yes, cross-state travel is one of the best perks of basing your trip in Sunrise Lake. The community sits just a few miles from the New Jersey border at the Delaware River and roughly 15 miles from New York, so an RV road trip from Sunrise Lake easily includes High Point State Park in NJ, the Catskills in NY, or a long weekend at Lake George about 4 hours north. Most hosts allow travel throughout the continental US, just confirm your route when you message them. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Canada-bound trips may be possible with host approval.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Sunrise Lake RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's easy to plan for. Expect 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 18 to 22 MPG for a Class B campervan, and tow-vehicle MPG for travel trailers. Pennsylvania gas prices in Pike County typically hover around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon, and the Pilot Travel Center in Matamoras (about 12 miles north) usually has the lowest diesel and gas prices in the area. Pro tip: top off in Matamoras before heading deeper into the Poconos, prices climb the further west you drive on Interstate 84.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds around Sunrise Lake?
Book early and your trip falls into place easily. Pennsylvania state parks like Promised Land and Tobyhanna open reservations 11 months in advance through the official Pennsylvania State Parks system, and summer Saturdays at Dingmans Campground (run by the National Park Service concessioner) often fill 3 to 4 months out. Private parks like Otter Lake and Lake Adventure usually have more last-minute openings, especially midweek. For peak foliage weekends in October, lock in your spot by July. Pro tip: if your first-choice park is full, search a Tuesday-to-Friday window instead, you'll often find prime lakefront sites still wide open.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Sunrise Lake?
Driving here is refreshingly low stress. Sunrise Lake sits at about 1,300 feet elevation in the Glaciated Low Plateau region, so roads are gently rolling rather than mountainous. Route 739 (the main road through the community) is a wide, well-maintained two-lane with a 25 to 45 mph limit. Interstate 84 runs just north for easy access to Scranton or NYC, and Route 209 follows the scenic Delaware south to the Water Gap. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, and in winter, PennDOT plows quickly but rural side roads can stay icy. Local insider tip: avoid the Milford-Matamoras bridge area Sunday afternoons in summer, weekenders heading back to NJ create the only real bottleneck.

You'll find everything you need close by. Most private parks in Pike County (Otter Lake, Lake Adventure, Cherry Ridge) offer full hookups with 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer, plus Wi-Fi, laundry, and dump stations. State parks like Promised Land and Tobyhanna offer electric-only sites with shared water spigots and a central dump station, free for registered campers. You can fill freshwater at any park entrance station. Local insider tip: the Delaware Water Gap NRA's Dingmans Campground has a dump station open to non-guests for a small fee, super handy if you're boondocking on private land near Sunrise Lake before heading home.

Mileage policies vary, some offer unlimited, others 100 to 150 free miles per night. Pro tip: bundle add-ons during booking instead of adding them later, hosts often discount packages and pre-stage everything so pickup is faster.
visitpa.com/region/pocono-mountainsHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Sunrise Lake?
Payment is straightforward and fully online through RVezy, with no cash and no in-person transactions. You pay the rental total and any add-ons by credit card at booking, and a refundable security deposit is authorized separately on your card shortly before your trip starts. Deposit amounts typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class. As long as you return the RV in the same condition, refueled per the agreement, and within your mileage allowance, the deposit is released back to your card after the trip. Take a quick walk-around video at both pickup and drop-off, it is the best way to keep your deposit return smooth and fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Sunrise Lake during winter for a snowy Pocono getaway?
Yes, winter RVing here can be magical. A number of Pike County hosts keep their rigs available year-round, and several Sunrise Lake area motorhomes are equipped with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and strong furnaces built for the Poconos' 20 to 35°F winter days. Promised Land State Park keeps a loop open year-round with electric hookups, and you're 45 minutes from Camelback and Big Boulder ski resorts. Pro tip: filter for RVs listed as four-season or cold-weather ready, plan to stay on shore power so the furnace runs freely, and ask the host about snow tires or chains, a true winter-ready family RV trip Sunrise Lake adventure is one of the area's best-kept secrets.
