Campgrounds and RV parks near Swarthmore, PA

Ridley Creek State Park is the main outdoor draw. The park offers hiking, biking, fishing along Ridley Creek, horseback riding, and wildlife watching, with most educational programming running from April through October. Highlights include a five-mile paved multi-use trail, a 4.7-mile equestrian trail, the Hunting Hill Mansion complex with formal gardens, and the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation, a living-history farm that operates seasonally within the park. Center-city Philadelphia is a short drive from any of the nearby campgrounds and puts Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the Philadelphia Zoo, and the Franklin Institute within easy reach. Families staying on the New Jersey side of the river also have access to Camden's waterfront attractions and South Jersey day trips. Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday adds on-site amenities such as a heated pool, playground, jumping pillow, catch-and-release pond, and an off-leash dog park for downtime between city excursions.

The greater Philadelphia area has a humid subtropical climate with strong seasonal contrasts. Summer is hot and often humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and the region's peak booking window. Private campgrounds like Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday, Four Seasons Campgrounds, and Lake Kandle typically run their pools and full activity calendars from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and weekend sites can fill weeks in advance. Spring and fall are milder and better for hiking and sightseeing without the crowds. Most educational programming at Ridley Creek State Park runs April through October, and autumn brings solid fall foliage in October. Shoulder-season nights can drop into the 40s Fahrenheit, so RVers should be ready to run furnaces. Winter is cold and quieter, and the area sees regular snowfall. Many private parks reduce services or close their bathhouses and pools during the coldest months, though some keep RV sites open year-round. Ridley Creek State Park stays open year-round from sunrise to sunset, with multi-use trails that allow cross-country skiing when there is snow and a grassy hill near the park office that is popular for sledding.

Campgrounds near Swarthmore are suburban in feel rather than backcountry. Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday is a well-manicured park with paved roads, grassy sites, and shade trees, and it offers pull-through and back-in 50/30-amp full-hookup sites, KOA Patio sites with concrete pads and firepits, tent sites, cabins, and glamping tents. Access from the interstate network is a strong point. I-95, I-476, and I-295 tie the Swarthmore area to campgrounds in Delaware County and across the Delaware River in Gloucester County, and most parks in the area are big-rig friendly. Expect closely spaced sites, gravel or grass pads, and busy summer weekends. Traffic in and out of Philadelphia is heaviest on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, so building extra buffer time into arrival and departure plans is worthwhile.
