Campgrounds near Tunkhannock
Tunkhannock sits in the Endless Mountains region of northeastern Pennsylvania, in Wyoming County along the Susquehanna River. The area gives RV travelers a mix of private campgrounds and state park campgrounds within roughly an hour's drive, plus easy access to small-town amenities, groceries, and fuel along U.S. Route 6.
Private options closest to town include Slumber Valley Campground, a family-run park along Meshoppen Creek with 80 sites that range from primitive tent spots to full-hookup RV sites with 30 and 50 amp service. Highland Campgrounds and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park round out the closer choices for travelers who want shorter drives to Tunkhannock proper.
For public-land camping, Lackawanna State Park sits about ten miles north of Scranton and offers wooded sites, cabins, and yurts around a 198-acre lake. Frances Slocum State Park, southwest of Tunkhannock in Luzerne County, runs a 100-site campground beside a 165-acre horseshoe-shaped lake. Both state parks are managed by the Pennsylvania DCNR and reserved through the statewide system.
Things to do near Tunkhannock
Water activities dominate the area. Frances Slocum State Park centers on a 165-acre lake open to boating with electric motors only and stocked for fishing, while Lackawanna State Park surrounds the 198-acre Lackawanna Lake and supports boating, fishing, swimming, and mountain biking on multi-use trails. Slumber Valley Campground has its own in-ground pool, two fishing ponds, a basketball court, a sand volleyball court, and a nature trail leading to a 20-foot waterfall on Meshoppen Creek.
Hikers and cyclists have miles of trail at both state parks, including roughly 13 miles of paths at Frances Slocum that accommodate skiers in winter and hikers year-round. Tunkhannock itself has restaurants, breweries, and shops along Tioga Street, and Scranton is about 30 minutes south for larger attractions and museums.

Camping season in northeastern Pennsylvania is shaped by the state-park calendar. Lackawanna State Park and Frances Slocum State Park both open their campgrounds on the second Friday in April and close in mid-October, and Slumber Valley Campground also runs from mid-April through mid-October. Outside that window, most regional campgrounds are closed, though day-use areas at the state parks stay open year-round from sunrise to sunset.
Late spring brings cool nights, green-up, and lower campsite demand. Summer is peak season: warm days, lake swimming, and the highest booking pressure, especially around the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends. Early to mid-fall is widely considered a strong window for shoulder-season travelers, with foliage typically peaking in early to mid-October and lighter crowds.
July is one of the wettest months, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and the spotted lanternfly remains an active invasive concern: campers are asked to inspect vehicles and firewood before leaving any Pennsylvania state park.
How to book a campsite
Pennsylvania state-park sites at Lackawanna State Park and Frances Slocum State Park are reserved through the DCNR system on ReserveAmerica, either online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), with phone hours 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, and many site types require booking at least three days ahead of arrival, though some sites may be available for same-day or first-come, first-served stays.
The maximum stay at Lackawanna State Park is 14 consecutive days in summer and 21 consecutive days in the off-season. Private campgrounds such as Slumber Valley Campground and Highland Campgrounds book directly through their own offices. For summer weekends and holidays, reserve as early as possible since popular loops fill months out.
What to expect
Expect wooded, rolling terrain rather than wide-open RV resort layouts. State-park sites at Lackawanna and Frances Slocum are gravel pads in forest loops, with electric hookups available on many sites; both parks have a sanitary dump station, flush toilets, hot showers, and drinking water. Pets are allowed on designated sites only.
Cell coverage is unpredictable in and around the state parks, so DCNR recommends downloading park maps before arrival. Private parks like Slumber Valley Campground offer full-hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service, a camp store, and a swimming pool. Sites are generally treed and not always perfectly level, so leveling blocks are useful. Note that beginning in 2027, Lackawanna State Park is starting a phased shower-house renovation, with portions of the campground temporarily closed in stages.

Travel trailers and campervans tend to sit at the lower end, while Class C and Class A motorhomes climb higher, especially during peak summer weekends. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tunkhannock,%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Tunkhannock?
For nearly every RV rental in Tunkhannock, your regular Class C driver's license is all you need. Pennsylvania only requires an upgraded non-commercial Class B license for single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and the vast majority of travel trailers, campervans, Class C motorhomes, and most Class A rigs on RVezy fall under that threshold. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and your identification is verified directly inside the platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country alongside your valid license and you're ready to roll into the Endless Mountains.

Just use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service, and check their listing for delivery range and fees. Pro tip: ask about delivery to Ricketts Glen State Park, which is about 25 miles west, so you can wake up next to the waterfalls without ever turning a key.

pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lackawanna-state-park.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Tunkhannock?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV road trip from Tunkhannock, with summer highs typically in the upper 70s to mid-80s F and cool, comfortable nights perfect for a campfire. September and early October are arguably the best of all: Endless Mountains foliage turns red and gold, bugs are gone, and campgrounds quiet down. Spring brings wildflowers and rushing waterfalls at Ricketts Glen, while winter often dips below freezing and most private campgrounds close, though year-round state park sites remain open for the adventurous. Pro tip: time your trip for fall foliage peak in early October for unforgettable views across Wyoming County.
weather.gov/bgm/I've never rented an RV before. Is Tunkhannock a good place to start?
Tunkhannock is honestly one of the friendliest spots in Pennsylvania for first time renting an RV. Roads through Wyoming County are uncrowded, speed limits are reasonable, and most campgrounds are level and pull-through-friendly. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to run the generator, hook up to shore power, dump tanks, and level the rig, so you're never figuring it out alone. You can also message the host anytime during your trip with questions. Pro tip: book a smaller Class C or campervan rental in Tunkhannock for your first outing, and aim for Cozy Creek Family Campground just 10 minutes from downtown for an easy maiden voyage.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/things-to-do/camping.htmlWhat happens if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You're never stranded. Every RV rental in Tunkhannock, PA includes 24/7 roadside assistance with your protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 6 or a generator hiccup at Ricketts Glen is one phone call away from help. You can also message your host directly through RVezy because they know their rig inside and out and often troubleshoot small issues in minutes. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip if you need backup. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number and your host's contact in your phone before pulling out, especially since cell coverage can drop in the deeper canyons around the Endless Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations from Tunkhannock?
Tunkhannock is a great launch pad for an RV road trip in Pennsylvania and beyond. Top picks within a few hours: Ricketts Glen State Park (about 25 miles, 22 named waterfalls), Scranton and Steamtown National Historic Site (about 30 miles), the Pocono Mountains and Lake Wallenpaupack (about 60 miles), Watkins Glen and the Finger Lakes in New York (about 110 miles), and the Catskills (about 130 miles). Cross-border travel into New York is straightforward, just confirm out-of-state travel with your host before booking. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval, while trips into Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: the Susquehanna River corridor along Route 6 is a scenic-byway dream for slow-paced driving.
visitpa.com/regions/pocono-mountainsWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I expect?
Budgeting fuel for your Tunkhannock RV trip is straightforward once you know the ranges. Campervans (Class B) average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes typically deliver 10 to 14 MPG, larger Class A rigs sit at 7 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gas prices in Wyoming County usually run close to the Pennsylvania state average, with stations in Tunkhannock proper along Route 6 and Route 29. A weekend trip to Ricketts Glen and back generally needs less than a tank in a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Tunkhannock before heading west toward the state park because options get sparse once you're in the hills.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Tunkhannock?
Book sooner than you think, especially for the marquee spots. Pennsylvania State Parks open reservations 11 months in advance through the official DCNR reservation system, and Ricketts Glen's lakeside sites at Lake Jean fill quickly for summer weekends and fall foliage. Private campgrounds like Cozy Creek and Stony Mountain take direct bookings and often sell out holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) months ahead. For midweek or shoulder season visits, two to four weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: lock in your campground first, then book your RV rental in Tunkhannock around those dates so delivery logistics line up perfectly.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Tunkhannock?
Driving an RV around Tunkhannock is refreshingly mellow compared to bigger Pennsylvania cities. Route 6 and Route 29 are well-maintained two-lane roads with gentle grades along the Susquehanna River, and traffic is light outside of summer weekends. You will encounter some winding climbs heading west toward Ricketts Glen and steeper terrain in the Endless Mountains, so take it slow on descents and use lower gears. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and be ready for sudden rain showers in spring. Winter brings snow and ice, so most renters stick to April through November. Pro tip: avoid the Pennsylvania Turnpike with larger trailers because regulations and tolls can be unfriendly for big rigs.
511pa.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Tunkhannock?
Campgrounds around Tunkhannock are well-equipped for a comfortable RV camping experience. Cozy Creek and Stony Mountain Family Campground both offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), pull-through sites, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi in common areas. Ricketts Glen State Park provides electric hookup sites, modern restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station, though there are no sewer hookups at individual sites. Lackawanna State Park has electric sites and a dump station as well. Potable water fill stations are available at all three. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving Tunkhannock since state park fill stations occasionally have lines on busy summer Saturdays.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/ricketts-glen-state-park/stay.htmlWhat's actually inside an RV rental in Tunkhannock?
You'll be impressed by how much rolls into a typical Tunkhannock rig. Most Class C and Class A motorhomes come with a queen or king bed, bunk options for kids, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, a dinette that converts to extra sleeping, air conditioning, furnace, and a generator for off-grid power. Many include a TV, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots. Campervans pack a clever galley and convertible bed. Every passenger needs a designated seatbelt seat, so check the sleeps-versus-seats count carefully. Pro tip: for a family RV trip in Tunkhannock, filter by sleeps count so everyone has a real bed and a buckled seat for the drive.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons can I get, and how does pickup and drop-off work?
Hosts in Tunkhannock often sweeten the deal with add-ons that make the trip easier: linens and bedding packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, kayaks (perfect for Lake Carey or Lake Jean), generator hour packages, and propane fill-ups. Fees and inclusions are listed right on each RVezy listing. Pickup usually happens at the host's driveway in or near Tunkhannock, where they'll walk you through every system. Drop-off is at the same location at the agreed time, with the RV cleaned and tanks dumped (or pay a dump fee to skip it). Pro tip: ask about delivery as an add-on if you'd rather have the rig waiting at Ricketts Glen.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/things-to-do.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in Tunkhannock runs entirely through the secure RVezy platform, with your card charged when the booking is confirmed. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is held as a temporary authorization on your card before pickup, then released after the host confirms the RV came back in the same condition it left. Deposit amounts vary by rig but are clearly shown before you book. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, and keep all communication with your host inside RVezy messaging so everything is documented if any question comes up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I dump tanks and fill fresh water near Tunkhannock?
Dumping and filling is easy to plan around Tunkhannock. Many local private campgrounds offer on-site dump stations and potable water fill for registered guests. Ricketts Glen State Park, about 25 miles west, offers a dump station near the campground area, and Lackawanna State Park to the east has one as well. Many Tunkhannock hosts will also let you return the RV with full black and grey tanks for a flat dump fee, taking the chore off your plate entirely. Pro tip: never dump grey or black water anywhere except a designated station, and always rinse your hose thoroughly to keep things sanitary for the next camper.
