Campgrounds and RV parks near Waverly, PA

Lackawanna State Park anchors outdoor recreation in the area. The 198-acre Lackawanna Lake is surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails winding through forest, and boating, camping, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming are popular activities. Horseback riding and shoreline fishing are also permitted on designated routes. Scranton, ten miles south, adds rainy-day options: the Steamtown National Historic Site, the Electric City Trolley Museum, and the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour. Families with older kids often pair a campground stay with a day trip to Montage Mountain for waterpark access in summer or skiing in winter. Shorter drives reach Salt Springs State Park, the Delaware State Forest, and the upper Susquehanna River for paddling and trout fishing.

The main camping season in northeastern Pennsylvania runs from mid-April through mid-October, which aligns with the Lackawanna State Park campground schedule: the campground opens the second Friday in April and closes October 14. Private campgrounds in the area often open a few weeks earlier and close a few weeks later, but water hookups are typically shut off once overnight freezes begin. July and August are the peak booking window. Lakefront and electric sites at Lackawanna State Park fill quickly for summer weekends and holidays, and reservations are strongly recommended well in advance. June is the wettest month in the Scranton area, with around 128 mm of rainfall, so RV renters should plan for wet ground and pack accordingly. Late September and early October are the strongest shoulder-season pick. Fall foliage in the Endless Mountains typically peaks in early to mid-October, campgrounds are quieter, biting insects have dropped off, and daytime temperatures remain comfortable for hiking. Winter camping is limited: the state park campground is closed, and most private campgrounds shift to seasonal-resident operation only.

Campgrounds in this part of Pennsylvania are wooded and hilly. Most RV sites at Lackawanna State Park have electric hookups, though some pads are not perfectly level, so leveling blocks are useful. Shower houses, flush toilets, drinking water, and a sanitary dump station near the campground entrance are all available on-site. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks, so download the park map before arrival. Pennsylvania has spotted lanternfly and emerald ash borer quarantines that restrict moving firewood, so buy firewood locally and burn it before leaving. Quiet hours at state park campgrounds run from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m., and pets are allowed only in designated loops. Black bears are present in the region, so food should be stored inside the RV overnight.
