Camping near Weatherly, Pennsylvania
Weatherly sits in Carbon County in the western foothills of the Pocono Mountains, close to the Lehigh River corridor and a cluster of well-known outdoor recreation areas. RV travelers use the town as a base for whitewater rafting on the Lehigh, biking the D&L Trail, and hiking in Lehigh Gorge and Hickory Run State Parks. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Allentown, and the historic town of Jim Thorpe are all within roughly an hour's drive.
Campground options within about 20 miles range from full-service private parks to a large state park campground. Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers sits on the rafting outfitter's property, while Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, 100 Mile View Camping, and Lehigh Gorge Campground offer private, family-oriented sites with hookups. Hickory Run State Park runs the largest campground in the area, with sites spread across a 15,990-acre park in Carbon County.
Cell service is inconsistent across much of the surrounding forest, so downloading maps and directions before arrival is recommended.
Things to do around Weatherly
Whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River is the signature activity, with guided trips running from mild family floats to dam-release days when water is released from Francis E. Walter Dam for bigger rapids. The Lehigh Gorge Trail (part of the D&L Trail) runs through the gorge and is popular for biking, with shuttle-supported downhill rides available from local outfitters.
Hickory Run State Park has over 40 miles of hiking trails, including Hawk Falls Trail to a 25-foot waterfall and the Shades of Death Trail. The Boulder Field, a National Natural Landmark, is a signature stop. Families also use Mauch Chunk Lake for swimming, fishing, and boating, and the scenic railway and Victorian downtown in Jim Thorpe are a short drive from most campgrounds.

The main camping season in the area runs from mid-April through mid-October. At Hickory Run State Park, modern campground facilities open the second Friday in April, and the dump station and running-water facilities close the third Sunday in October, with rustic camping continuing until mid-December. Private parks in the area generally operate on a similar April through October schedule.
Summer is peak season. Rafting outfitters run daily trips, private campgrounds host pool days and weekend events, and state park sites can book weeks in advance for holiday weekends. Thunderstorms are common in July and August, and dam-release rafting weekends draw larger crowds and should be booked well ahead.
September and October bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall color across the Pocono ridges. Winter is cold and snowy, with most private campgrounds closed and only limited rustic camping available at Hickory Run through the end of deer season in mid-December.

This was our family’s first time renting an RV after years of tent camping, and it was a great experience overall. Michael was an excellent host. He delivered the RV to our campsite, had everything set up and ready to go, and took the time to explain how everything worked. As first-time RV renters, that made the experience stress-free and much less intimidating. The RV itself was exactly what we needed for our family of four. It was spacious enough to sleep comfortably, kept us cool during the hot weather, kept us dry through the rain, and everything worked as expected. We spent most of our time outdoors and primarily used the RV for sleeping, and it was perfect for that. The only reason I’m mentioning this is so future renters know what to expect. When we first arrived, there was a noticeable odor inside the RV. As the trip went on, it seemed to be coming from the bathroom/holding tank area. When I mentioned it to Michael at pickup, he was very open about it and explained that it’s something he has to deep clean every few rentals to eliminate the smell. I appreciated his honesty, but since it’s a known issue rather than a one-time occurrence, I think it’s fair for future renters to be aware of it. Other than that, we had a fantastic experience. Michael was friendly, responsive, and easy to work with, and I wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again

How to book campgrounds near Weatherly
Hickory Run State Park reservations go through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system (visitPAparks.com or 888-PA-PARKS). Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance and must be made at least three days before arrival; peak summer weekends typically fill months ahead, so early booking is strongly advised for holiday dates.
Private campgrounds are booked directly. Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, 100 Mile View Camping, and Lehigh Gorge Campground take reservations through their own websites or by phone. Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers offers onsite camping to guests who book a trip with the rafting outfitter, so the reservation is bundled with the river trip.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Weatherly is forested and hilly, and many sites have some slope, so leveling blocks are useful. Private parks in the area generally offer full-hookup RV sites with water, electric, sewer, and often cable and WiFi, plus tent sites, pools, camp stores, and playgrounds. Hickory Run has a mix of electric, full-hookup, and non-hookup sites, along with camping cottages and group camps.
This is active bear country. Hickory Run requires all food and scented items to be stored in a vehicle when guests are away from the site, and the same practice is smart at any campground in the region. Alcohol is prohibited in Pennsylvania state parks except under specific permit conditions. Firewood, ice, and basic supplies are available at most on-site camp stores, with Albrightsville and White Haven nearby for larger resupply runs.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Weatherly%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Weatherly, PA?
Good news: your everyday driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Weatherly, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, motorhomes, or travel trailers used recreationally. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is, then they're hooked after one Pocono RV trip.
dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/default.aspxIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Weatherly RV rental?
Yes. Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out on I-476 or Route 93 with confidence. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip and you choose your level of coverage at checkout, not the host, so you can dial it up for added peace of mind on Pocono backroads or keep it standard for a quick Hickory Run weekend. If you have a flat tire near Lehigh Gorge or a dead battery at a trailhead, one call to RVezy roadside support gets help on the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my RV rental in Weatherly?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, and it is applied consistently to every reservation. Your refund amount depends on how far in advance of your trip start date you cancel, and the policy details are shown at checkout so there are no surprises. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund or travel credit. Lock in your Weatherly dates now and review the exact cancellation terms during checkout before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Weatherly, PA?
Absolutely, and the Poconos are dog heaven. Many pet-friendly RV rental Weatherly hosts welcome four-legged passengers, so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see them instantly. Hickory Run State Park has pet-permitted campground loops and miles of leashed-dog trails to Hawk Falls and the famous Boulder Field, while the Lehigh Gorge Trail is a flat, shaded gravel path perfect for paws. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees or size limits, then pack a tie-out, a collapsible bowl, and your pup's vaccination record.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/HickoryRunStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Weatherly?
Yes, RV delivery Weatherly is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you have never towed before. Many RVezy hosts will deliver the RV directly to Hickory Run State Park or another nearby campground or cabin, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically charged per mile from the host's location, and some hosts include a free delivery radius. Use the Delivery filter to find them, share your exact campsite number with the host, and you will have a turn-key home on wheels waiting when you arrive.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/HickoryRunStatePark/Pages/Camping.aspxHow does mileage work, and can I get unlimited miles?
Mileage is flexible on RVezy because hosts set their own policies, and many Weatherly-area listings include a generous daily allowance (often 100-150 miles) plus a low per-mile rate after that. Some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for a bigger Pennsylvania loop. Weatherly sits at the crossroads of I-80 and the PA Turnpike Northeast Extension, so it's easy to stack short drives: Jim Thorpe is 12 miles, Hickory Run State Park 9 miles, Lehigh Gorge 15 miles, and the Delaware Water Gap about 50 miles. Tell the host your rough route before booking and they'll often customize a package that fits.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat are the best campgrounds near Weatherly, PA?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Weatherly include Hickory Run State Park Campground (about 9 miles away, around 380 sites and walking distance to Boulder Field), Mountain Springs Camping Resort with full hookups in classic Pocono terrain, Pine Cradle Lake Family Campground, and Don Laine Campground in Palmerton with shaded full-hookup pull-throughs. State park sites tend to book up months in advance for summer weekends and peak foliage. Pro tip: midweek arrivals at Hickory Run often score quieter, more scenic sites that vanish by Friday afternoon.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/HickoryRunStatePark/Pages/Camping.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Weatherly for an RV trip?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for a Weatherly RV trip, with the sweet spot being late September into mid-October when Pocono foliage peaks. Summer highs typically sit in the upper 70s to mid-80s F, nights cool into the 60s, and humidity is lower than in Philadelphia. Spring brings wildflowers and strong waterfall flow at Hawk Falls, while winter dips into the 20s F with regular snow, perfect for a cozy heated-trailer getaway near Big Boulder or Jack Frost ski resorts. Book foliage weekends 3 to 4 months ahead, because everyone in the Northeast has the same idea.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in the Poconos?
Totally, first time renting an RV in the Poconos is easier than you'd think. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedures, and they stay reachable by message all trip. Weatherly's roads are mostly gentle two-lanes, and Route 93 and I-80 are easy highway runs for any motorhome. If you're nervous, choose a Class C motorhome (drives like a big van) or book a host with delivery so you never have to drive the RV at all. Practice in a parking lot in town first, then point yourself toward Hickory Run with confidence.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Weatherly RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on the PA Turnpike, a dead battery at Beltzville State Park, or a lockout at a trailhead is just one phone call away from help. Pennsylvania also has a strong network of RV-friendly service centers in nearby Hazleton, Lehighton, and Wilkes-Barre, all within about 30 miles. Your host is also a great resource since they know the RV inside and out, so message them first for quick fixes like resetting a GFCI or relighting a water heater. Screenshot your booking confirmation and the roadside number in case you lose cell signal in Lehigh Gorge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations from Weatherly, PA?
Weatherly's location at the southern edge of the Poconos makes it a launchpad for an epic RV road trip from Weatherly. Top picks: Jim Thorpe (12 miles, the "Switzerland of America" with whitewater rafting on the Lehigh), Hickory Run State Park and Boulder Field (9 miles), Lehigh Gorge State Park (15 miles for biking the rail-trail), Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (about 50 miles, canoeing and waterfalls), and Knoebels Amusement Resort (75 miles, free-admission classic park with full-hookup camping). Want to go bigger? Niagara Falls is a doable 5-hour drive, and Washington D.C. is about 4 hours south for an extended loop.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how much should I budget for gas?
Plan smart and fuel won't blow your budget. Class B campervans get around 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8-12 MPG, Class A coaches 6-9 MPG, and tow setups land between 10-14 MPG depending on the truck. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run slightly above the national average, with regular often sitting near $3.40-$3.80 per gallon around Weatherly and Hazleton. For a 3-night, 200-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $80-$110 for fuel. Pro tip: fuel up at the Pilot in West Hazleton or the Flying J near the I-80/I-81 split before heading deeper into the Poconos, where station prices climb noticeably.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Weatherly?
For Pennsylvania state parks like Hickory Run, you can reserve through the state's official reservation system up to 11 months ahead, and popular summer and foliage weekends genuinely fill that early. For private RV camping Weatherly options like Mountain Springs or Don Laine, 2 to 3 months out is usually enough, except for holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and peak leaf-peeping weekends), when 4 to 6 months is safer. Midweek you can often book a site a week out. Pro tip: book your RVezy rental first, then your campsite the same day, since campground availability moves quickly in this region.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Weatherly?
Driving around Weatherly is mostly relaxed, with a few Pocono quirks worth knowing. Route 93 and Route 940 are gentle two-lane roads with light traffic, while I-80 east-west and the I-476 PA Turnpike Northeast Extension handle the highway miles smoothly. Watch for steep grades on Route 93 north toward Hazleton, occasional deer at dawn and dusk (Pennsylvania leads the nation in deer-vehicle collisions), and winter snow squalls from November through March that can drop visibility fast. Avoid the narrow historic streets in downtown Jim Thorpe in a big rig, just park at the Lehigh Gorge trailhead lot and walk in. Cell service is solid on highways, spotty inside Hickory Run.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Weatherly?
Most campgrounds near Weatherly are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Hickory Run State Park offers electric hookups at many sites, a sanitary dump station, potable water fills, hot showers, and flush toilets, while private parks like Mountain Springs and Don Laine add full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and camp stores. For dump stations on the road, Hickory Run has a public one near the campground entrance, and the Flying J in West Hazleton (about 15 miles south) has 24/7 RV dump and freshwater. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading into Lehigh Gorge, where backcountry sites have no spigots.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/HickoryRunStatePark/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Weatherly?
You'll feel right at home. A typical motorhome rental Weatherly listing includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa for extra sleepers, a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink and cookware, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning, a furnace for chilly Pocono nights, and seatbelts for everyone traveling (4-7 passengers depending on the rig). Many hosts toss in extras like a generator, outdoor camp chairs, a Blackstone griddle, bedding, and even starter coffee. Check each listing's amenity list for Wi-Fi hotspots, smart TVs, solar setups, or backup cameras. Pack light, you'll be surprised how much is already there.
dcnr.pa.gov/Recreation/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options are available when I rent an RV in Weatherly?
RVezy hosts in Weatherly offer add-ons that make your trip easier and more fun, including linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, bikes, kayaks and SUPs (great for Mauch Chunk Lake), generators, camping chairs, fire pits, BBQ grills, Wi-Fi hotspots, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Weatherly, but many hosts offer delivery to your campground, a meet-up at a halfway point, or even airport delivery from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International (AVP, about 30 miles) or Lehigh Valley International (ABE, about 45 miles). Use the Instant Book filter for the fastest confirmation, and ask hosts about a Lehigh Gorge biking add-on.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Weatherly%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy at booking with a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host, which protects both you and the owner. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is released after the trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in the same condition. To avoid surprises, complete a thorough video walkaround with the host at pickup and at return, follow the mileage and generator-hour limits in the listing, and dump tanks and refuel as required. Keep your fuel receipt as proof of top-off at return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Weatherly RV rental into other states or across the border?
Yes, most hosts allow travel throughout the Northeast, so a campervan rental Weatherly trip into New York's Catskills, New Jersey's Cape May, Maryland's Assateague Island, or even Acadia National Park in Maine is on the table. Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the specific host and insurance terms, so message the host before booking to confirm your route. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage does not extend there. Niagara Falls (about 5 hours), Vermont's Green Mountains (about 6 hours), and the Finger Lakes (about 3.5 hours) all make spectacular extensions from Weatherly.
