Camping near Weissport East, Pennsylvania
Weissport East sits along the Lehigh River in Carbon County, a few miles north of Lehighton and minutes from the historic town of Jim Thorpe. The area serves as a practical base for exploring Lehigh Gorge State Park, which follows the Lehigh River from the Francis E. Walter Dam in Luzerne County south to Jim Thorpe in Carbon County.
RV travelers typically stay at private campgrounds in the surrounding valley because Lehigh Gorge State Park itself does not offer camping within park boundaries, so nearby state parks and private campgrounds handle overnight stays. Pocono Point RV & Campground, 100 Mile View Camping, Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, Lizard Creek Campground, and Stoneybrook RV Resort all sit within a short drive of Weissport East and cover a range of formats from full-hookup resort sites to wooded, rustic pitches.
The location works well for families combining river recreation with small-town sightseeing. Jim Thorpe's Victorian downtown, Mauch Chunk Lake, and the D&L Trail are all reachable in under twenty minutes from most campgrounds in the corridor.
Things to do around Weissport East
The signature activity is whitewater rafting on the Lehigh. Commercial outfitters run scheduled dam-release weekends from spring through fall, and family float trips run on non-release days. Cyclists ride the Lehigh Gorge Trail, a 26-mile crushed-stone rail trail that forms part of the 165-mile Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor and runs through the gorge from White Haven to Jim Thorpe.
Other nearby options include the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway out of Jim Thorpe, kayaking and swimming at Mauch Chunk Lake, and hiking at Hickory Run State Park. Hickory Run has more than 40 miles of hiking trails, including the Hawk Falls Trail to a 25-foot cascade and the Shades of Death Trail, plus Boulder Field, a National Natural Landmark. Trout fishing on the Lehigh is also popular; a Pennsylvania fishing license is required.

The private campgrounds along the Lehigh corridor operate on a warm-season calendar. Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, for example, runs its camping season from April 1 through October 31, with the pool, entertainment, and events kicking off on Memorial Day weekend. Some parks operate year-round or with limited winter sites, while smaller rustic operations close for the cold months.
Summer is peak season for rafting and biking, and weekends fill quickly. Fall is the marquee window for scenery: late September through mid-October typically brings peak foliage, when the Lehigh Gorge fills with red, orange, and gold and area festivals draw visitors from across the region. Book fall foliage weekends well in advance.
Winter brings snow, ice, and reduced services. Winter conditions can support cross-country skiing and snowmobiling on some trails, but most private campgrounds are closed or offer only limited winter sites, and nearby state park facilities scale back. Hickory Run State Park's main campground typically operates from mid-April through mid-October.

Great weekend getaway!
Kami A. - Nov 2024
Great vehicle and friendly owners. This compact camper has a lot of creature comforts while allowing one to maneuver and park in regular parking lots. The van is really easy to drive and handles really nice. The beds were comfortable and IMO accommodate 2 adults (top bed) and 1 adult or 2 kids in the lower bed. We were able to use the bike rack, too, and that worked great for a road bike and mountain bike (I think 2 mountain bikes might not fit unless the handle bars were turned on 1 of them). We didn't use the, generator, heater, hot water, shower, sink, microwave or toilet so I can't comment on them but I wish we rented it longer so we could've taken advantage of all this van has to offer. We would absolutely rent again.

How to book campgrounds near Weissport East
Private campgrounds in the area each use their own reservation channels. Jim Thorpe Camping Resort takes direct bookings through its website and by phone, while 100 Mile View Camping, Stoneybrook RV Resort, Lizard Creek Campground, and Pocono Point RV & Campground accept phone and online reservations through their operator sites.
For state park camping at nearby Hickory Run, reservations go through the Pennsylvania State Parks portal on ReserveAmerica, which opens sites up to eleven months in advance. For summer holiday weekends and October foliage, book as early as possible, ideally several months ahead. Confirm rig length limits, hookup type, and pet rules directly with the campground before arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain in the Lehigh Gorge corridor is hilly and wooded. Access roads to some campgrounds are narrow and winding; larger Class A rigs should confirm approach routes and site dimensions in advance. Most established RV parks offer full or partial hookups, dump stations, laundry, and camp stores, while more rustic sites in the area may provide only picnic tables, fire rings, and basic sanitary facilities.
Cell coverage is generally reliable in Lehighton, Jim Thorpe, and along Route 209, but drops in the gorge itself and on side roads. Black bears, whitetail deer, and wild turkey are common, so food should be secured overnight. Pennsylvania state parks require pets on leash and prohibit alcohol in day-use areas.
Groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are available in Lehighton and Palmerton.

visitpa.com/regions/pocono-mountainsDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Pennsylvania?
Good news: your everyday Pennsylvania driver's license is all you need for the vast majority of RVs you can rent in Weissport East. Pennsylvania only requires a non-commercial Class B license for single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and almost every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on RVezy falls well below that threshold. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right in the app. Visiting from abroad? An International Driving Permit (IDP) paired with your home license keeps things simple at pickup.

You're about 25 minutes from the New Jersey border at the Delaware Water Gap, two hours from the Catskills in New York, and roughly four hours from Niagara Falls. Wherever you head in the U.S., your protection plan and roadside assistance follow you across state lines.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan your fuel budget with confidence: Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes deliver 10 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A rigs come in around 7 to 10 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes, so budget around $3.50 to $4.00 per gallon. The closest fuel stops are along US-209 in Lehighton and at the Mahoning Valley exit of the Northeast Extension. Pro tip: top off in Lehighton before heading north toward the Poconos, where gas prices climb at resort-area stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Weissport East?

Private parks like Lehigh Gorge Campground and Don Laine generally need four to eight weeks of lead time in summer. Midweek and shoulder-season trips often have availability just a week or two out. The deposit is released back to you after the host confirms the RV was returned in the same condition. To avoid any hiccups, do a quick walkthrough video with the host at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with fuel and propane levels matching pickup, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it.
