Campgrounds near White Haven
White Haven sits in the western foothills of the Pocono Mountains along the Lehigh River, at the northern end of Lehigh Gorge State Park. The park's 6,107 acres follow the Lehigh River from the Francis E. Walter Dam in the north down to Jim Thorpe in the south, making the town a natural staging point for rafting, biking, and hiking trips into the gorge.
Options in the area range from full-hookup private parks to a large state-park campground. Lehigh Gorge Campground is a family-run RV and tent park just outside town, and Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers sits close to the river outfitter of the same name. A short drive south along I-80, Hickory Run State Park operates one of the largest public campgrounds in the region, and Pocono Camp & Glamp and Jim Thorpe Camping Resort round out the choices for RV renters who want amenities like pools, cabins, or glamping tents.
The area is within a two- or three-hour drive from Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and New York City, and about one hour from Allentown, Scranton, and Wilkes-Barre, which makes weekend traffic heavy in summer and fall.
Things to do near White Haven
The main draw is the Lehigh River corridor. This section of the Lehigh is popular for rafting, kayaking, and canoeing, with river flow controlled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Francis E. Walter Dam, which performs scheduled releases for whitewater recreation from spring through fall. Guided trips leave from outfitters in White Haven and Jim Thorpe.
Cyclists ride the D&L Trail through the gorge. The popular stretch of roughly 25 miles between Jim Thorpe and White Haven runs with the river on one side and forest on the other, and passes few services, so riders should carry provisions. Shuttles allow one-way rides back to Jim Thorpe.
At Hickory Run State Park, families hike to Hawk Falls and the Boulder Field, a National Natural Landmark, and swim at Sand Spring Lake in summer.

Camping season here is short and predictable. At Hickory Run State Park, camping is available from the second Friday in April until the middle of December, and the dump station and other facilities that use water close for the year on the third Sunday in October. Private parks such as Lehigh Gorge Campground typically run a similar April-to-late-fall season, with some staying open slightly later for hunters and fall foliage travelers.
Spring through early fall is the busy stretch. Most visitors come from spring through early fall, and day-use parking lots often fill up early, even on weekdays, so arriving early helps. Whitewater release weekends in spring and fall pull large crowds to river-access points at White Haven, Rockport, and Glen Onoko.
Winter brings snow and cold. Pocono elevations produce reliable snowfall from December through March, and most private campgrounds shut off water hookups well before the first hard freeze. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing continue in the state parks.

This was our family’s first time renting an RV after years of tent camping, and it was a great experience overall. Michael was an excellent host. He delivered the RV to our campsite, had everything set up and ready to go, and took the time to explain how everything worked. As first-time RV renters, that made the experience stress-free and much less intimidating. The RV itself was exactly what we needed for our family of four. It was spacious enough to sleep comfortably, kept us cool during the hot weather, kept us dry through the rain, and everything worked as expected. We spent most of our time outdoors and primarily used the RV for sleeping, and it was perfect for that. The only reason I’m mentioning this is so future renters know what to expect. When we first arrived, there was a noticeable odor inside the RV. As the trip went on, it seemed to be coming from the bathroom/holding tank area. When I mentioned it to Michael at pickup, he was very open about it and explained that it’s something he has to deep clean every few rentals to eliminate the smell. I appreciated his honesty, but since it’s a known issue rather than a one-time occurrence, I think it’s fair for future renters to be aware of it. Other than that, we had a fantastic experience. Michael was friendly, responsive, and easy to work with, and I wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again

How to book a campsite near White Haven
Public and private campgrounds use different systems. For Hickory Run State Park, reservations can be made up to eleven months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation website or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Sites are released at noon Eastern time on the opening day of the window, and summer weekends, especially around holidays, often book out months ahead.
Private parks in the area, including Lehigh Gorge Campground, Adventure Campground at Whitewater Challengers, Pocono Camp & Glamp, and Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. RV renters should confirm site length, hookup type (30 or 50 amp), and whether pull-through sites are available before booking, since inventory varies widely between properties.
For holiday weekends and October foliage, book early and have a backup date in mind.
What to expect
Terrain is wooded and rolling, with sites tucked among hardwoods and hemlocks. Cell service is spotty once inside the gorge or deeper state-park loops, and OTA television reception is limited. Private parks typically offer full hookups, cable, and Wi-Fi of variable quality; state-park sites are more rustic.
Bear precautions matter. At Hickory Run and similar Pocono parks, overnight guests are required to store all food and scented items such as toothpaste, deodorant, and dish soap in their vehicle while away from the site, and trash should be disposed of in bear-proof dumpsters. Alcohol is prohibited in all Pennsylvania state parks, so plan accordingly if that matters to your group.
Expect summer weekend traffic on PA 940 and around river access points, and biting insects in low-lying areas from late spring through midsummer.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every rental in White Haven, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you have breathing room to confirm vacation plans. Refund amounts after that depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel, and RVezy has provisions for major disruptions. Full details are on the RVezy Help Center. Yes, RV delivery in White Haven is one of the most popular options on RVezy and a game changer for first-time renters. White Haven shines from late April through late October, with three sweet spots. Late May through June brings 70 to 80F days, blooming mountain laurel, and big water on the Lehigh River for rafting. July and August average highs near 80F with warm nights perfect for campfires, expect afternoon thunderstorms. The crown jewel is late September through mid-October when Pocono foliage peaks and daytime temps hover around 60 to 70F. Winters drop to lows near 18F with regular snow, and most campgrounds close after the third Sunday in October. For your first White Haven RV trip, target the last weekend of September for fall color without summer crowds.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay on Pocono roads?
You'll do great, and your host will set you up for success. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and dump procedures, so you're not figuring it out alone. White Haven sits right off Interstate 80 (Exit 273) and the PA Turnpike Northeast Extension (I-476 Exit 95), both wide, well-maintained highways ideal for first-time renters. Stick with a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet for easy handling on twisty roads like PA-534 into Hickory Run. Drive in the daylight, take wider turns, and check your height (12 to 13 feet typical) before any low underpass on back roads near Jim Thorpe.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are never stranded on a White Haven RV trip. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and on-the-spot help. One call gets a technician dispatched wherever you are, whether that is the side of I-80 near the Lehigh Tunnel or a forested site at Hickory Run. Your host is also your local lifeline for questions about the specific RV (where the inverter switch is, how to reset the fridge), and the RVezy support team is reachable before, during, and after the trip. Save both numbers in your phone before you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from White Haven?
White Haven is one of the best launch pads in the Northeast for an RV road trip. Top runs include Jim Thorpe and Lehigh Gorge State Park (about 20 miles, scenic and walkable), Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (about 40 miles, waterfalls and hikes), the Catskills in New York (about 90 miles north), Gettysburg (about 130 miles southwest), and a coastal swing to Cape May, NJ (about 170 miles). Crossing into New York, New Jersey, Maryland, or other US states is generally fine, just confirm with your host. Canada travel may be allowed depending on the host and protection level (ask before booking), and Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/lehigh-gorge-state-park.htmlWhat should I budget for fuel on a White Haven RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, and it's very predictable in the Poconos. Travel trailers and small Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 miles per gallon, larger Class A motorhomes 7 to 9 mpg, and Class B campervans can hit 18 to 20 mpg. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes. A 250-mile loop from White Haven to Jim Thorpe, the Delaware Water Gap, and back in a Class C runs roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Hazleton or off Exit 256 on I-80 before heading deeper into the mountains, prices climb at smaller Pocono stations.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxHow far in advance should I book a campground near White Haven?
For the best campgrounds near White Haven, the answer is: as early as you can. Hickory Run State Park opens reservations 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system (visitPAparks.com or 888-PA-PARKS), and summer weekends, plus all of fall foliage season, fill within days. Private campgrounds like Lehigh Gorge Campground and Mountain Vista typically take bookings 6 to 12 months out and hold sites longer. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Friday or Saturday at Hickory Run, grab a Sunday-Thursday slot, midweek availability is much easier, and the Pocono trails are practically empty.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/hickory-run-state-park/stayWhat are driving conditions like around White Haven?
Driving conditions around White Haven are friendlier than most mountain destinations. I-80 and I-476 (PA Turnpike Northeast Extension) are wide, well-marked, and easy in any motorhome. Watch for two things: the Lehigh Tunnel on I-476 has a 13'-6" clearance (fine for nearly all RV rentals), and back roads like PA-534, PA-903, and PA-940 wind through forested grades with the occasional steep descent into the Lehigh Gorge, use lower gears and tap brakes lightly. Deer are common at dawn and dusk year-round. Winter storms can dust the area with snow from November to March, so if you're booking a campervan rental in White Haven during shoulder season, check the forecast before heading out.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near White Haven?
Pocono campgrounds are well-equipped for stress-free RV camping in White Haven. Hickory Run State Park offers electric hookups at most sites, select full-hookup sites (water, sewer, electric), a sanitary dump station, modern restrooms with warm showers, and a camp store with ice and firewood. Lehigh Gorge Campground has full hookups, laundry, a pavilion, and hot showers. Most private parks include 30/50-amp service, potable water fills, Wi-Fi (spotty in valleys), and fire rings. Heads up: Hickory Run's dump station and water close after the third Sunday in October. Bear country rule, store all food and toiletries in the RV overnight. There's also a dump station at the Flying J in Bartonsville (20 miles).
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/hickory-run-state-park/stayWhat's inside a typical White Haven RV rental?
Most motorhome rentals in White Haven come fully outfitted and ready to roll. Expect a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette and/or sofa (sleeps 4 to 8 total), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Class C and Class A motorhomes include a roof A/C, propane furnace (great for cool Pocono nights), seatbelted seating for travel, and often a generator. Many hosts add TV, Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, and stocked kitchen kits. Travel trailers are similarly equipped minus the engine. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and check photos carefully, family RV trip in White Haven works best when everyone has their own dedicated sleep spot.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/hickory-run-state-parkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
White Haven hosts offer plenty of helpful add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, propane fire pits, generators, bike racks, kayak racks, and pet cleaning fees ($50 to $100 if you bring a dog). Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near White Haven, Hazleton, or Mountain Top, with a 60 to 90 minute orientation, while delivery to local campgrounds is widely available for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to unlimited mileage. Pro tip: book add-ons during checkout, not at pickup, you'll lock in availability and avoid morning-of surprises.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/hickory-run-state-parkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure: RVezy charges your credit card directly through the platform when you book, so there is no Venmo, no cash, and no awkward conversation with the host. A refundable security deposit is held (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value) and released after the trip ends, assuming the rig comes back in the same condition. The simplest way to avoid issues is to take a quick video walkaround at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with holding tanks dumped and fuel topped off (your host will tell you which station they prefer near White Haven), and message any small dings right away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take a White Haven RV rental out in the winter?
Yes, and a winter Pocono RV trip is a hidden gem. Some White Haven hosts keep their RVs available year-round, especially four-season-rated Class C motorhomes with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces. With January lows averaging near 18F, confirm a few things with your host: that the unit is winterized for use (not just storage), that propane tanks are full, and that you have shore power at your site since most state park water systems close after the third Sunday in October. Mountain Vista Campground and Thousand Trails Scotrun stay open year-round for hookups. Bonus: Camelback and Big Boulder ski areas are 15 to 25 minutes away.
