Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Cary, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Cary, IL?
RV rental in Cary, IL is one of the most affordable ways to explore northern Illinois, with most travel trailers starting around $95 to $160 per night and Class C motorhomes ranging from $175 to $275 per night. Larger Class A motorhomes and luxury fifth wheels typically run $250 to $400 nightly. You will see the biggest savings booking midweek or in the shoulder months of late April, May, September, and October when McHenry County campgrounds are open but summer crowds have thinned. Pro tip for a cheap RV rental in Cary: filter for travel trailers under 25 feet and ask hosts about weekly discounts, since many offer 10 to 20 percent off stays of five nights or longer.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cary,%20IllinoisWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Cary, IL?
Good news: for the vast majority of RVs you can rent on RVezy in Cary, your regular Class D Illinois driver's license (or your home state equivalent) is all you need. Visitors from other states or countries can drive on their valid home license, and international guests should bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside it. You also need to meet RVezy's approved driver requirements, which generally include being at least 25 years old, and your identification is verified during booking. Illinois only requires a higher non-commercial classification for personal RVs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 16,000 pounds, which is why most listings here, travel trailers and smaller Class C motorhomes, fall well under that threshold.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs the RV covered if something happens during my trip in Cary, IL?
Yes, every RV rental in Cary booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan with 24/7 roadside assistance built into the price, so you can hit Route 14 or head up to Wisconsin with real peace of mind. RVezy offers multiple protection plan tiers that you choose at checkout based on the level of coverage that feels right for your trip, and the plan covers physical damage to the RV during your rental. First time renting an RV? That built-in coverage and roadside support is one of the biggest reasons guests feel confident clicking book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Cary RV rental?
Booking your Cary RV trip is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the host, and you can cancel within the grace period after booking for a full refund of the rental cost. After that window, your refund amount depends on how close you are to your trip start date, and RVezy support is available 24/7 if your circumstances change. The exact terms are shown during checkout so there are no surprises. That flexibility makes it easier to lock in a summer weekend at Chain O'Lakes State Park before sites disappear.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Cary, IL?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Cary is easy to find on RVezy by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter, which surfaces hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs. Many McHenry County campgrounds are dog-friendly too, including Chain O' Lakes State Park where pets are welcome on a leash no longer than six feet, and the Hollows Conservation Area right in Cary has wooded trails perfect for a morning walk with your pup. Bring a copy of vaccination records, pack a tie-out and waste bags, and let your host know your dog's size and breed when you book. Pro tip: the Fox River Trail offers miles of paved, leashed-dog-friendly walking just minutes from town.
mccdistrict.org/preserves/the-hollows-conservation-area/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Cary?
Yes, RV delivery in Cary is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a big rig through traffic on Route 14 or I-90. Many hosts will deliver the RV directly to your campground at Chain O'Lakes State Park, Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort in Marengo, or even your own driveway, then level it, connect hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location, so closer destinations cost less. Use the Delivery filter when searching, and message hosts directly to confirm pricing for your specific campground or address.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cary,%20IllinoisHow far can I drive on my RV rental, and where do people usually go from Cary?
You can absolutely plan a real RV road trip from Cary, and many hosts offer generous mileage allowances (often 100 to 150 free miles per night) with affordable per-mile rates after that, while some list RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer adventures. Popular routes include Chain O' Lakes State Park (about 25 miles north), Lake Geneva, Wisconsin (40 miles), Starved Rock State Park (90 miles southwest), Galena's historic district (140 miles), and the Wisconsin Dells (160 miles north). Chicago lakefront and Indiana Dunes National Park are both within a two-hour drive. Pro tip: confirm mileage policy with your host upfront so you can plan stops without surprise fees.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.starvedrock.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Cary, IL?
You have a fantastic mix of state parks and private resorts within an hour of Cary. Chain O' Lakes State Park in Spring Grove (about 25 miles north) offers more than 230 sites including Class A-Premium spots at Fox Den and Honeysuckle Hollow with electric hookups for $25 per night. Chicago Northwest KOA in Union is just 15 miles away with full hookups, pool, and family activities. Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort in Marengo runs year-round with 50-amp full hookups, and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo adds a swimming beach to the mix. For wooded forest preserve camping, Paul Wolff Campground in Elgin is a quieter local favorite. Book state park sites at exploremoreil.com well ahead of summer weekends.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlWhen is the best time of year for a Cary RV trip?
Late May through early October is prime season for RV camping in Cary, with July highs averaging around 80°F and comfortable overnight lows in the low 60s, ideal for campfires and lake days. June and September are sweet spots that combine great weather with smaller crowds at Chain O' Lakes and Fox River campgrounds. Fall foliage along the Fox River Trail peaks in mid-October when daytime temps hover in the 50s and 60s, perfect for hiking with the RV furnace ready for chilly nights. Winters get genuinely cold here (January averages 15°F to 27°F with snow), so most area campgrounds close from late October through April, though a few like Lehman's Lakeside stay open year-round.
weather.gov/lot/I have never rented an RV before. Will I know how to use it?
You will, and you will not be figuring it out alone. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery, if the RV comes to you), walking you through how to operate the propane, fresh water tank, gray and black tanks, slide-outs, awning, generator, and any quirks of their specific rig. Most walkthroughs take 30 to 60 minutes, and hosts encourage you to ask anything, no matter how basic. You can also message your host any time through the RVezy app during your trip if a question pops up at the campsite. Pro tip: pick up your RV the day before your first night out so you can do a practice setup in your driveway without pressure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002053493-RentersWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip from Cary?
You are covered 24/7. Every RVezy booking includes roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat tire on I-90, a dead battery at Chain O'Lakes State Park, or a mechanical issue cruising up to Lake Geneva, one phone call gets help dispatched to your location. RVezy's support team is available around the clock to coordinate repairs, find you a tow, or help with overnight arrangements if needed. Your host is typically your first text for quick questions (like how to relight the water heater), and the roadside team handles anything mechanical. Keep both numbers saved in your phone and you are set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV across state lines or into Wisconsin from Cary?
Yes, cross-state travel is one of the best parts of an RV rental in Illinois, and Cary's location 15 miles south of the Wisconsin border makes it a launching pad for trips into Lake Geneva, Milwaukee, Door County, or the Wisconsin Dells. Travel throughout the continental US is generally allowed, though some hosts set specific boundaries in their listing, so always confirm your route with them before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limitations. Travel into Canada may be possible with host approval, so message them directly if a cross-border trip is on your wishlist. Most northern Illinois hosts are very familiar with Wisconsin road trips and happy to share route tips.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/maps.htmlHow much should I budget for fuel on a Cary RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable in your RV trip budget, so plan smart. Travel trailers do not burn extra gas themselves, but your tow vehicle's mileage will drop to roughly 10 to 14 miles per gallon (mpg) while towing. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A gas motorhomes average 6 to 10 mpg. Illinois gas prices generally run a bit above the national average, with stations along Route 14 and Northwest Highway in Cary often slightly cheaper than I-90 tollway plazas. For a weekend trip up to Chain O' Lakes State Park and back (around 60 miles round trip), budget $25 to $50 for fuel depending on the rig. GasBuddy is a great tool for finding the cheapest local pumps.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Cary?
Book early for summer weekends, especially Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, when Chain O'Lakes State Park, Illinois Beach State Park, and Starved Rock state park sites can fill up months ahead. Illinois state park reservations are made through the ExploreMore IL system and can be booked up to six months in advance. Private parks like Chicago Northwest KOA and Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort typically take reservations up to 12 months out. For weekday or shoulder-season trips, two to three weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: if your dream weekend is fully booked, check back often because Illinois state park sites turn over frequently as plans change.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are the driving conditions like around Cary?
Driving around Cary is genuinely manageable, even in a larger rig. Route 14 (Northwest Highway) and Route 31 are the main local roads and handle RV traffic without issue, while I-90 (Jane Addams Tollway) gets you west toward Rockford or east into Chicago's suburbs quickly. Watch for the Union Pacific Northwest Metra rail crossings in downtown Cary, where low-clearance signage is well marked but worth noting if you are in a tall Class A. Avoid driving into downtown Chicago itself in anything over 25 feet; instead, park at a suburban campground and take Metra in from Cary station. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, so summer and fall offer the easiest driving conditions for first-timers.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/road-conditions.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Cary?
Most campgrounds near Cary offer the full range of RV-friendly amenities, so RV camping in Cary feels comfortable from day one. Chain O' Lakes State Park's Class A sites include electric hookups, a sanitary dump station near the entrance, potable water fill stations, flush toilets, hot showers, and a camp store. Private parks like Chicago Northwest KOA and Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort step it up with full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, pools, and Wi-Fi. Forest preserve campgrounds like Paul Wolff are more basic but still have electric and dump stations. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground since fill stations between sites are not always easy to find on the road.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/park.chainolakes.htmlWhat is inside a typical RV rental in Cary?
You will be surprised how complete most rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Cary comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed, additional sleeping for 4 to 8 people (bunks, convertible dinettes, or jackknife sofas), a kitchen with a fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, plus a full bathroom with toilet and shower. Most have air conditioning, propane furnace, awning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts include generators (great for boondocking near the Fox River), TVs, and even cellular Wi-Fi boosters. Travel trailers offer the same livability without the drive-it-yourself element. Check the listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm specifics like bed sizes or generator availability for your family RV trip in Cary.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cary,%20IllinoisWhat add-ons can I get with my Cary RV rental?
Most Cary hosts offer practical add-ons that make your trip easier, typically priced as flat fees or daily rates. Common options include kitchen kits ($30 to $75), bedding and linen packages ($25 to $50 per bed), camping chairs and outdoor rugs ($15 to $30), generators (sometimes included, sometimes $20 to $40 per day), bike racks, paddleboards, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Delivery and setup is often the most valuable add-on if you are camping at Chain O'Lakes State Park or hosting friends in your backyard. Pickup is usually at the host's address, and drop-off is the same location at an agreed time. Mileage policies vary by listing, so always check the free-mile allowance and per-mile overage before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cary,%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy for a Cary rental?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through the RVezy platform, so you never exchange cash with the host. You pay your rental total at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, and that includes the nightly rate, protection plan, RVezy service fee, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before your trip (the amount is set by the host and shown on the listing) and released after a smooth return, typically within a few days. To avoid issues, take dated photos and a quick video of the RV at pickup and drop-off, return the fuel and propane at the same level as pickup, and dump the tanks if your host requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Cary during winter?
Yes, winter RV rental in Cary, IL is possible and can be a memorable adventure if you embrace the season. A handful of McHenry County hosts list four-season rigs with heated and enclosed underbellies, heated holding tanks, and upgraded furnaces that handle northern Illinois winters where January temperatures average 15°F to 27°F. Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort in Marengo stays open year-round with full hookups, making it a solid winter base camp. Filter listings for winterized RVs and message the host to confirm cold-weather readiness before booking. Pro tip: use the campground's shore power for electric heat to save propane, keep a small space heater for the bathroom, and let your faucets drip on the coldest nights to prevent frozen lines.
