Route 132 along the St. Lawrence is the main draw: tidal beaches, sea-stack viewpoints, and small fishing harbours line the coast. Whale and seabird sightings are possible from shore through summer and early fall. Inland, Réserve faunique de Matane holds one of the highest moose densities in Quebec, with over 4,000 moose sharing 1,275 square kilometres. Day fishing for brook trout and lake trout is available on waterways throughout the reserve. The International Appalachian Trail crosses Gaspésie for a 650 km stretch, including more than 100 km inside the reserve. Étang à la Truite, a 2 km lake, is suited to canoe and kayak outings.

The RV season on this stretch of the Gaspé is short and weather-driven. Most private campgrounds along Route 132 open in late May and close in mid-September to early October once overnight temperatures drop and services are winterized. July and August are peak: warmest water, longest days, and the strongest chance of clear coastal weather, but also the busiest weeks for the Tour de la Gaspésie loop. The Étang-à-la-Truite registration post is open from early June to early September. From the first Tuesday of September through mid-October, access to the reserve's hiking trails is restricted by regulation during the big game hunting period, new rules come into force each year, and current information is available at John Registration Centre. Winter brings deep snow, backcountry skiing in the Chic-Chocs sector, and closure of road-accessible campgrounds.

Coastal sites along Route 132 are generally level and easy to enter with a trailer or motorhome, but expect wind off the St. Lawrence and cool overnight temperatures even in midsummer. Cell coverage thins quickly east of Matane and is patchy in the village. Inside the reserve, the road to Étang-à-la-Truite is gravel for the full 42 km from the registration centre. Wi-Fi is available at the two registration centres, but cell signal is limited to a few places. Moose are present throughout the reserve, including on the road at dawn and dusk, so drive slowly. The John sector lies about 10 minutes from a convenience store and grocery shop with a gas station, and 30 minutes from Matane services. Stock up on fuel, groceries, and propane in Matane or Sainte-Anne-des-Monts before heading in.
