Campgrounds and RV parks near Airport, CA

River recreation defines the area. At Caswell Memorial State Park, the Stanislaus River runs slow enough for swimming and seasonal tubing through summer, with sandy coves and a day-use beach. Easy oak-shaded trails loop through the riparian woodland, and the river supports canoeing, kayaking, and fishing for bass, catfish, and crappie. At McConnell State Recreation Area, the Merced River offers swimming and bank fishing, plus shaded open fields for picnics. George J Hatfield State Recreation Area is quieter and more rustic, with shallow river frontage that suits families with small children, bank fishing, and birdwatching along the river corridor. Modesto and Manteca are within a short drive for groceries, restaurants, and supply runs.

The Central Valley climate is Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. From June through August, daytime highs routinely run in the 90s Fahrenheit, with strings of 100-plus-degree days common and very little rainfall. Shaded riverside sites at Caswell Memorial State Park and McConnell State Recreation Area are popular for cooling off, and summer weekends book out well in advance. Mosquitoes are heaviest near the rivers in summer, particularly at George J Hatfield State Recreation Area, so repellent is essential. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable camping weather, with mild days and cool nights. Spring brings migratory birds and wildflowers; fall delivers low humidity and quieter campgrounds. Winter is mild but damp, with the wettest months falling between December and February and dense tule fog common in the valley. High river flows during wet winters have closed portions of Caswell to camping in the past, so check park status before booking an off-season trip.

Most public campgrounds in this corridor are rustic to moderately developed. McConnell State Recreation Area and George J Hatfield State Recreation Area have no hookups; sites include a picnic table and fire ring, with potable water and restrooms nearby. Caswell Memorial State Park has flush toilets and hot showers but caps trailers at 21 feet and motorhomes at 24 feet, so larger rigs should plan on Kit Fox RV Park LLP or French Camp RV Park instead. No on-site stores operate at the state parks, so stock up in Ripon, Modesto, or Delhi before arriving. Expect raccoons and ground squirrels around camp, and use the provided food lockers. Cell coverage is generally usable along Highway 99 but can drop inside the riparian forest. Pets are allowed in campgrounds on leash but not on trails or in the rivers.
