Campgrounds and RV parks near Amador Pines, CA

The signature stop is Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park itself. The park preserves more than 1,100 mortar holes ground into a marbleized limestone outcropping by the Northern Sierra Miwok, plus a reconstructed village, the Chaw'se Regional Indian Museum, and short interpretive trails. Highway 88 leads east into the Sierra for hiking, lake fishing, and winter sports at Kirkwood. West of camp, the historic Gold Country towns of Jackson, Sutter Creek, and Volcano offer walkable main streets, gold-rush sites such as the Kennedy Mine, and easy access to Black Chasm Cavern. The Shenandoah Valley wine region sits about 25 minutes from Pine Grove and is a popular day trip.

The foothills around Amador Pines have a hot, dry Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and clear, arid summers. July is typically the warmest month, with average highs near 90 degrees Fahrenheit, while December is the coldest, with highs around 53 and lows just below 40. Most of the annual precipitation falls between November and March, with January typically the wettest month. Spring (March to May) and fall (September to October) are the most comfortable windows for RV travel: mild days, cool nights, lighter crowds, and open wildflower meadows or fall color in the oaks. Summer brings peak demand at the family resorts, hot afternoons, and elevated wildfire risk; check Cal Fire and PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff advisories before arrival. Winter camping is feasible at the lower-elevation properties; expect rain and occasional snow at higher elevations along Highway 88, plus possible chain controls heading toward Kirkwood. Indian Grinding Rock takes reservations during peak months and shifts to first-come, first-served in the cooler off-season.

Cell service is generally workable along the Highway 88 corridor but can fade on side roads. Bring water and propane for state-park sites; full hookups are standard at the private resorts. Sites at Indian Grinding Rock are shaded by oak and pine, with picnic tables, fire rings, food lockers, flush toilets, and token-operated showers; hookups are not available. Two of the 22 family sites are ADA accessible. Gold Country Campground Resort and Jackson Rancheria RV Park offer pools and family amenities, with the Jackson Rancheria property providing shuttle access to the adjacent casino and hotel. Fire restrictions tighten in summer; expect open-fire bans during high fire danger and verify what is permitted at your site before arrival.
