Campgrounds near Boulder Creek
Boulder Creek sits in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, surrounded by coast redwood forest and within easy reach of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, the oldest unit in the California State Parks system. The town serves as the inland gateway to Big Basin via Highway 236, and connects to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and the San Lorenzo Valley via Highway 9 to the south. RV travelers have two distinct types of options nearby: full-hookup private parks set among redwoods along the river corridor, and reservation-only state campgrounds that lean toward tent, cabin, and dry camping.
Redwood Resort RV Park and Campground sits closest to town. Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort in nearby Felton offers full hookups along the San Lorenzo River. Little Basin Cabins and Campground, part of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, mixes cabins, tent sites, and a small number of RV spots. Huckleberry and Sempervirens are historic Big Basin campgrounds whose status depends on ongoing recovery from the CZU Lightning Complex Fire.
Things to do near Boulder Creek
The main draw is old-growth redwood hiking. Before the CZU Lightning Complex Fire, Big Basin had over 100 miles of backcountry roads and trails, and with several reopened, visitors can again pass through old-growth redwood forest, follow meandering creeks, and climb to ridge top vistas. The Redwood Loop near the historic park core and the longer route to Berry Creek Falls are signature hikes. Rancho del Oso is the coastal portion of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, located 17 miles north of Santa Cruz off Highway 1, across from Waddell State Beach in the Waddell Valley. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park to the south adds riverside swimming holes and the Roaring Camp narrow-gauge steam train. Santa Cruz beaches, the Boardwalk, and Highway 1 coastal drives are roughly a half-hour from town.

Summer is peak season. Coastal fog often pushes inland in the mornings and burns off by midday, keeping temperatures comfortable under the redwood canopy. State park campsites and private RV parks book out well in advance for Friday and Saturday nights from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Reservation windows on ReserveCalifornia open six months in advance on a rolling daily basis at 8 a.m. Pacific time, so popular summer weekends should be targeted exactly six months out.
Spring and fall are quieter and the forest is at its most vivid: ferns and new redwood growth in spring, low-angle light and lighter crowds in October and November. Winter is the wet season. Rain falls roughly 74 days per year and totals about 351mm, with February the wettest month at around 67mm over nine rainy days. Winter storms can close Highway 236, drop trees across roads, and trigger temporary campground closures. Check road status and ReserveCalifornia alerts before arriving between December and March.

What a great experience. Lorant and Katalin couldn't have been more pleasant to work with. And the trailer is in excellent condition. I have been renting a trailer every year for the last 5 years to attend an annual campout with friends, and this is the nicest trailer I've rented by far. I would happily rent this trailer again.
Frank K. - Jul 2026
As usual, Lorant’s RV is one of the cleanest and best RV we ever rented! This is our second time getting it and certainly will not be the last. Well maintained, fully equipped, and perfect for our family. Love it!

How to book a campsite
California state park campgrounds in the Boulder Creek area are reserved through ReserveCalifornia. Entry to Little Basin Cabins and Campground is by reservation through ReserveCalifornia or walk-in only, with no day-use permitted. The booking window opens six months ahead on a rolling basis at 8 a.m. Pacific time. Camping reservations within the main Big Basin Redwoods State Park footprint are not available while all campgrounds there remain closed, so plans built around Huckleberry or Sempervirens should be reconfirmed against current park status before booking.
Private parks use their own systems. Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort books through its website and by phone. Redwood Resort RV Park and Campground takes reservations directly. For summer weekends, lock in private-park sites several months out.
What to expect
Sites in this area are deep in second-growth and old-growth redwood. Expect heavy shade, cool nights even in midsummer, slow drying after rain, and limited solar charging. Cell service is patchy on Highway 236 and inside the parks. Roads into Big Basin and Little Basin are narrow, winding, and slow; larger rigs should plan extra travel time and follow official park directions rather than shortcuts.
Full hookups are available at the private parks, with 30 and 50-amp service, water, and sewer at Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, plus pull-through sites that accommodate big rigs. State campgrounds in the Big Basin system are largely dry camping with bear boxes; each site typically has a metal picnic bench, a bear box, and a fire pit with a grill. Store food in bear boxes, not in the RV.

Take curves slowly, use pullouts to let faster traffic by, and watch for cyclists and wildlife at dawn and dusk.
