Campgrounds and RV parks near Bret Harte, CA

Most activity centers on the river corridors. At Caswell Memorial State Park, families tube the slow-moving Stanislaus, swim at the day-use beach, fish for catfish and bass, and walk the shaded oak-woodland nature trails. The river is calm enough through much of the year for inner tubes and easy wading. Bird and wildlife viewing is strong: woodpeckers, hawks, and deer are common in the riparian canopy. McConnell State Recreation Area and George J Hatfield State Recreation Area sit on the Merced River and are set up for swimming, fishing, canoeing, and rafting, with bass, catfish, and perch the typical catches. Day trips from Bret Harte also work well for Modesto city parks, Knights Ferry on the Stanislaus, and Yosemite's western entrances within driving range.

The Central Valley around Bret Harte has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Summer high temperatures routinely sit in the 90s Fahrenheit and can push past 100, so river campgrounds fill quickly on weekends because the water is the main way to cool off. Shaded sites at Caswell Memorial State Park and along the Merced River at McConnell State Recreation Area book out earliest. Mosquitoes are active near the rivers during warmer months, especially at George J Hatfield State Recreation Area, so repellent is essential. Spring brings wildflowers, mild temperatures, and the best wildlife viewing as migratory birds move through. Fall is comfortable and quieter, with warm afternoons and cool nights. Winter is the wet season; rainfall is concentrated from December through February, tule fog is common in the valley, and river levels can rise. Some park facilities reduce operations in the off-season, but core camping at the listed state parks generally remains available year-round.

Expect rustic, river-bottom camping at the state units and more standard RV-park amenities at the private properties. Caswell Memorial State Park has flush toilets, hot showers, picnic tables, fire rings, and food lockers, but no hookups and no on-site store, so groceries and water should be loaded before arrival. McConnell State Recreation Area offers drinking water, flush restrooms, coin-operated showers, and a dump station, but again no electric, water, or sewer at individual sites. Cell service can be patchy under the heavy oak canopy. Wildlife is active at the river parks, so food should be locked overnight. Pets are allowed in the campgrounds at most of these parks but are usually restricted from trails and the river. Summer nights cool noticeably after hot days, so even in July a light layer is useful.
