Campgrounds and RV parks near Brookdale, CA

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park anchors most itineraries. The Redwood Grove Loop passes ancient trees up to 277 feet tall and around 1,500 years old, and the climb to the Observation Deck at 805 feet opens views toward Monterey Bay. The San Lorenzo River runs through the valley with summer swimming holes including the Garden of Eden, reached via a short hike off Highway 9. Roaring Camp Railroad in nearby Felton runs steam-train excursions through the redwoods and a connecting train down to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Day trips reach Natural Bridges State Beach for tide pools, the Mystery Spot for a quirky family stop, and Big Basin Redwoods State Park for additional old-growth groves and hiking.

The San Lorenzo Valley has a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and a concentrated wet season from late fall into early spring. Summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day is peak camping season, with warm afternoons, cool nights under the canopy, and reliably dry weather. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground sees its highest demand during this window and reservations are strongly recommended. Spring brings green hillsides, flowing creeks, and quieter campgrounds, though March and April can still see rain. Fall is dry, mild, and one of the better windows for RV travel, with smaller crowds after Labor Day. Winter is the wettest period in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and atmospheric river storms can trigger road closures, flooding along the San Lorenzo River, and debris-flow warnings near the CZU Lightning Complex burn scar above Boulder Creek and Ben Lomond. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground now operates year-round following the closure of Big Basin to camping, though winter weather can still affect access, so confirm current status before booking.

Private RV parks in the Brookdale corridor generally offer full hookups with electric, water, and sewer, along with restrooms, laundry, and Wi-Fi that should not be relied on for work. Sites are shaded and can be close together, a tradeoff for being directly under redwoods along the river. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground is more rustic, with picnic tables, fire rings, bear-proof food lockers, flush toilets, and coin-operated hot showers that require quarters. There are no hookups at the state park, though a water fill station is available. Cell service is variable throughout the valley. Bring layers: redwood shade keeps mornings and evenings cool even when inland valleys are hot.
