Campgrounds and RV parks near Bystrom, CA

River-based recreation drives most camping trips in this part of the valley. The Stanislaus River runs slow much of the year and only picks up heavy flow during the rainy season, and campers float in inner tubes or relax in sandy coves during summer at Caswell Memorial State Park. Fishing for catfish, black bass, and perch is popular along the Merced River at McConnell State Recreation Area, and the river runs shallow enough in places for families with younger children to wade. Activities at George J Hatfield State Recreation Area include fishing, picnicking, river wading, sunbathing, hiking, kayaking, and nature study along more than a mile of Merced River frontage. Yosemite National Park, the Jamestown rail town, and the Knights Ferry covered bridge are all reachable as day trips from a Bystrom-area basecamp.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for camping in the lower San Joaquin Valley. Daytime highs typically run in the low 70s Fahrenheit during these months, with cool mornings and long stretches of dry weather. Spring brings green hills, wildflowers, and full rivers from Sierra snowmelt, which can also mean limited swimming access where currents run high. Summer is hot and dry, with daytime highs routinely in the low 90s Fahrenheit, and river coves at Caswell Memorial State Park and McConnell State Recreation Area become weekend draws to cool off, so reservations should be made well ahead. Winter is the quiet season. Days are mild but mornings are foggy and damp, and tule fog can reduce highway visibility sharply. High water on the Stanislaus, Merced, and San Joaquin rivers can affect riverside sites after heavy storms, and parts of Caswell Memorial State Park have been closed in the past due to flooding damage. Mosquito activity is heaviest from late spring through early summer near the Merced River parks.

Public campgrounds in this area trend rustic. Caswell Memorial accommodates tent camping and smaller RVs, with a maximum length of 24 feet for motorhomes and 21 feet for trailers, no hookups, and amenities including flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, and sites equipped with a picnic table, camp stove, and food locker. At George J Hatfield State Recreation Area, individual sites are tent only with a short walk from the parking area, served by drinking water and restrooms, while the group camp can take RVs up to 30 feet. McConnell State Recreation Area offers 21 primitive sites beneath cottonwoods and sycamores along the Merced River, with no hookups, drinking water, a dump station, fire pits, picnic tables, and food lockers. Bring water, layers, and insect repellent; mosquito populations can run heavy during warmer months.
