Campgrounds near Colma, California
Colma sits in northern San Mateo County between Daly City and South San Francisco, with the Pacific coast roughly four miles west and downtown San Francisco about ten miles north. The town itself has no campgrounds, so RV travelers base out of nearby parks and drive in. The closest options form two clusters: full-hookup urban parks just minutes from Colma, and oceanfront sites along Highway 1 in Pacifica and Half Moon Bay.
Treasure Island MH and RV Park and Candlestick RV Park give the quickest access to San Francisco proper, with Candlestick RV Park offering full hookups on the bay side of the city, big-rig sites, and easy reach to SFO and downtown. San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica places rigs on a coastal bluff a short drive south. Farther down Highway 1, Pillar Point RV Park sits across from Pillar Point Harbor, and Francis Beach and Campground at Half Moon Bay State Beach offers state-park camping directly behind the dunes. Together these cover urban sightseeing, harbor towns, and beach camping within a 45-minute radius.
Things to do near Colma
Most RV travelers use Colma as a launchpad for San Francisco: the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Park, and Chinatown all sit a short drive or BART ride north. Candlestick RV Park is roughly four miles from downtown and minutes from SFO, making car-free city days easy. South along Highway 1, Pacifica delivers surfing beaches, tide pools, and clifftop trails, with whales, pelicans, and paragliders often visible from the bluff at San Francisco RV Resort. Half Moon Bay anchors the coastal side trips: surf-watching at Mavericks off Pillar Point, the paved Coastside Trail for cycling, harbor seafood at Princeton-by-the-Sea, and four miles of broad sand at Half Moon Bay State Beach. Inland, Skyline ridges and redwood parks in San Mateo County add hiking options.

The Colma coast runs on a Mediterranean cycle: cool wet winters, dry summers, and a warm dry stretch in early fall. The rainy season generally runs November through March, with the wettest months typically January and February. Summers are dry but famously foggy along the immediate coast, with a marine layer pushing in most mornings and burning off by midday; areas inland and south toward Half Moon Bay tend to clear sooner.
Late summer and early fall, particularly September and October, are typically the warmest and sunniest stretch on this coast, which also makes them peak booking windows. Spring brings green hills, wildflowers, and gusty afternoons, especially along the Pacifica bluffs. Winter storms can bring heavy rain, cliff erosion, and short-term road closures on Highway 1; the coastal RV parks generally stay open year-round, but Highway 1 detours are worth checking before travel. Snow is essentially nonexistent at sea level, and freezing nights are rare.

The RV we rented was a great base camp for the weekend. We would definitely rent it again.

The RV was just as described. It worked out great for us and was nice and clean. The instructional video that came out before we picked it up was great and made using everything on board very easy. A great rental and we will be using it again in the future. The owner was very responsive to any questions we had and was very accommodating with our special requests.

How to book
Reservation systems vary by operator. Francis Beach and Campground at Half Moon Bay State Beach books through ReserveCalifornia at reservecalifornia.com or by phone at 1-800-444-7275, with a booking window of up to six months in advance. Popular summer and weekend dates can fill within minutes of release, so setting up an account ahead of time helps. There is a seven-day stay limit during peak season from May through October, and 14 days at other times. Private parks including Candlestick RV Park, San Francisco RV Resort, Treasure Island MH and RV Park, and Pillar Point RV Park take direct reservations through their own websites or by phone, and generally allow longer stays. Pillar Point RV Park recently began accepting reservations through its website, though walk-ups are still common.
What to expect
Coastal sites are breezy and cool, with salt spray on everything exposed to the outside; pack layers even in July. Francis Beach and Campground offers electric hookups at more than half of its sites but no water or sewer at the pad, with a dump and potable-water station on site and quarter-operated hot showers. Maximum RV length is 40 feet, and a few sites are tent-only. Private parks in the area typically provide full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, Wi-Fi, and showers, but sites can be tight and laid out parking-lot style, especially within San Francisco city limits. Confirm site type at booking, particularly at bluff-edge locations. Dogs are usually welcome on leash in campgrounds but not on most state-beach sand.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Colma,CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Colma?
Good news: for almost every RV on RVezy in Colma, your regular Class C driver's license is all you need. California only requires a non commercial Class B license for motorhomes longer than 40 feet, and a non commercial Class A license for trailers over 10,000 pounds, neither of which applies to the vast majority of rentals you'll find on the platform. You do need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy will verify your ID right through your account during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set to enjoy your Colma RV trip.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook-2011/license-classes-and-requirements/What protection is included when I rent an RV in Colma?
Every RV rental in Colma booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit Highway 1 with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level (not the host) during checkout to match how much extra protection you want. Roadside help is just a phone call away if you get a flat on the Pacific Coast Highway or need a jump start at Half Moon Bay. The protection plan provides meaningful financial coverage for damage during your trip, making it easier to say yes to that San Francisco Peninsula adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Colma RV rental?
Booking is low risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a full money back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. You can review the current policy details on RVezy's Help Center or in your booking confirmation. If California weather or a Bay Area wildfire affects your plans, contact RVezy support right away and they will walk you through your options so your Colma RV trip stays flexible.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Colma RV rental?
Absolutely, pet friendly RV rental in Colma is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings from local hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats too). Once you've picked a few favorites, message the host to confirm size and breed details before booking. Colma and the surrounding San Mateo County have plenty of pup approved spots to explore: try the off leash area at Pacifica's Esplanade, the leashed trails at San Bruno Mountain State Park just minutes north, or a coastal romp at Fort Funston where dogs run free on the beach. Bring poop bags and a water bowl, and your dog will love this trip as much as you do.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=496Can the RV be delivered to me in Colma or somewhere else nearby?
Yes, RV delivery in Colma is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first time renters who would rather skip driving a big rig through Bay Area traffic. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your RV directly at your campground, vacation home, or driveway in Colma, Daly City, South San Francisco, or out at Half Moon Bay State Beach. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts who offer it, then check their delivery radius and per mile fee in the listing. Ask the host for a full on site walkthrough, they will show you how everything works from the awning to the propane so you start your trip confident.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038052414-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Colma?
You can roam as far as you would like, and Colma's location on the San Francisco Peninsula puts incredible road trip destinations within easy reach. Each host sets their own mileage policy: some include 100 to 150 free miles per night, others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer loop. From Colma you are about 30 miles to Half Moon Bay, 75 miles to Santa Cruz redwoods, about 195 miles to Yosemite Valley, 200 miles to Lake Tahoe, and roughly 400 miles to Los Angeles via Highway 1. Check the mileage allowance on each listing before booking, and message the host if you are planning a bigger loop so they can quote an unlimited add on.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038052234-Mileage-allowancesWhere can I camp with an RV near Colma?
You have great options for RV camping near Colma within a short drive. San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica (about 15 minutes away) sits on a bluff over the Pacific with full hookups and ocean views. Half Moon Bay State Beach (Francis Beach Campground, about 30 minutes south) offers sites with electric hookups, a dump station, and direct beach access. Candlestick RV Park in San Francisco offers full hookups with a skyline backdrop. For something more rustic, Mount Madonna County Park and Memorial Park in San Mateo County are stunning. Book Half Moon Bay State Beach through ReserveCalifornia up to six months in advance, since coastal sites sell out fast.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=531When is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Colma?
Colma's mild Mediterranean climate means RV camping is genuinely year round, but September and October are the local sweet spot. Coastal fog finally lifts, temperatures climb into the comfortable upper 60s and low 70s, and crowds thin out. Summer days (June through August) often stay cool and foggy near the coast at 60 to 68 degrees, while inland trips to Napa or Yosemite are warm and dry. Winters are wet but mild, typically 50 to 60 degrees, with rain on roughly half the days from November through March. Book a Colma RV trip for late September to catch warm weather, harvest season in Sonoma, and the best chance of clear Golden Gate Bridge views.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=37.6769&lon=-122.4528I am first time renting an RV. Is this really doable from a place like Colma?
Totally doable, and you are in great company. Many renters in Colma are first timers, and the platform is built around making it easy. Your host will give you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through how the propane, water, electrical, and slide outs work so nothing feels mysterious. If you are nervous about driving a big rig through Daly City traffic or the Highway 280 grades, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan, or book a host who offers delivery so the RV is parked and set up before you arrive. RVezy customer support is available and so is roadside assistance with the protection plan, so help is always one tap away on your first Bay Area adventure. Remember, approved drivers must be 25 or older.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Colma RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Skyline Boulevard, the battery dies at the Pacifica overlook, or you need a tow off Highway 1, one phone call gets help dispatched to your location. Your host is also a great first contact for quirky vehicle specific questions like how to reset the inverter or where the spare propane tank lives. Keep your booking confirmation handy and note your exact location (mile markers help on rural roads). Do a quick walkaround each morning to check tires and lights so small issues never become roadside ones.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Colma RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes to most of North America, with one clear rule. You can drive your RV rental from Colma into Nevada (hello Lake Tahoe and Reno), Oregon, Arizona, or anywhere in the lower 48. Travel into Canada may be allowed but depends on the individual host's permission, so message them through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because the protection plan and insurance do not extend across that border. Popular RV road trips from Colma include the Pacific Coast Highway down to San Diego (about 500 miles), Highway 395 to the Eastern Sierra, and a Tahoe loop. Confirm your route with the host and you are good to roll.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Colma RV trip?
Bay Area gas is no secret: regular unleaded around Colma typically runs higher than the national average, often in the $5 to $6 per gallon range, with diesel a bit higher. Plan for fuel economy of 18 to 22 MPG for a campervan, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C motorhome, and 7 to 10 MPG for a Class A or large fifth wheel. For a typical 300 mile weekend loop in a Class C, that is roughly $150 in gas. Fuel up just before leaving the Peninsula, since stations in Daly City and South San Francisco usually beat the prices along Highway 1. Use GasBuddy to spot the cheapest Costco and Safeway pumps along your route.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Colma?
For the most popular Bay Area campgrounds, aim to book six months out, the exact window that California State Parks releases on ReserveCalifornia.com on a rolling daily basis at 8 a.m. Pacific Time. Coastal favorites like Half Moon Bay State Beach (Francis Beach), Mount Tamalpais, and Big Basin sell out within minutes for summer weekends. For inland or private parks like San Francisco RV Resort, two to three months ahead is usually enough. National forest sites and dispersed camping are booked through Recreation.gov. Pro tip: if a coastal site is fully booked, set up cancellation alerts on a service like Campnab. Spots open up constantly as plans change, and you can snag the best campgrounds near Colma at the last minute.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1029What's driving an RV like around Colma and the Bay Area?
Easier than you might think, especially once you're out of the urban core. Colma sits right on Highway 280 and El Camino Real, both wide and RV friendly, and you can be on rural Highway 1 in 20 minutes. The thing to watch is San Francisco itself: avoid the Stockton Tunnel (low clearance), steep hills like Lombard and Filbert, and downtown narrow streets. Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge are both fine for RVs. Time your departure outside of 7 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. to dodge brutal commuter traffic. Pro tip: many first time renters book a host who delivers the RV directly to their first campground so they skip city driving entirely and start their trip relaxed.
dot.ca.gov/travel/restrictionsWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Colma?
Most Bay Area RV parks deliver solid amenities. San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica has full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Wi Fi, laundry, and hot showers. Half Moon Bay State Beach Francis Beach Campground offers electric hookups at many of its sites, a potable water fill station, hot showers, and an RV dump station. Candlestick RV Park has full hookups with skyline views. Most California state parks include a dump station and fresh water fill but not full hookups at the site. Top off fresh water and dump tanks at Half Moon Bay before heading north, since dump stations get scarce closer to San Francisco proper.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=531What is actually inside an RV rental in Colma?
You will be impressed by how home like a modern motorhome rental in Colma can feel. Expect a real bed (queens are standard, some rigs have bunks too), a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, plus dining seating that often converts to extra sleeping space. Most rentals include air conditioning, a furnace, USB outlets, and a TV. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically have a generator for boondocking, and many hosts offer Wi Fi hotspots and solar add ons. Every passenger seat has a seatbelt and your host will confirm the legal sleeping versus traveling capacity at pickup. Ask your host about included kitchen kits and linens so you only pack what you actually need.
rvezy.com/What add ons can I get with my Colma RV rental, and how does pickup work?
Hosts in Colma offer all kinds of helpful add ons: generators, bike racks, paddleboards, kitchen kits, linens and towels, outdoor camp chairs, BBQs, and pet packages. Delivery and setup is the most popular add on for first timers, with fees typically based on distance from the host. Pickup usually happens at the host's home in Colma, Daly City, or nearby Peninsula cities, and includes a full 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Mileage policies vary, so check whether you get a set number of free miles per night, unlimited, or a flat package. Bundle generator plus extended mileage if you are planning to boondock at places like Pinnacles National Park or Alabama Hills.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038052414-Delivery-optionsHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay your full rental cost through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card. The security deposit is set by the host and placed as a hold on your card before your trip, not actually charged, then released back to you a few days after a clean return. To avoid any hold ups, do a thorough walkaround inspection with photos at pickup and return, follow the host's mileage and fuel policies, and return the RV with tanks dumped if that was the agreement. Keep all gas receipts so there is a clear record of return fuel level on your Colma RV rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV overnight in San Francisco itself?
Here is the honest scoop: San Francisco enforces strict overnight parking restrictions on oversized vehicles through SFMTA, so skip the idea of street camping in the city. Instead, base yourself just south of the city. San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica (about 12 miles from downtown) and Candlestick RV Park are the closest legal overnight options, and both put you a quick drive or transit ride from Fisherman's Wharf and Golden Gate Park. For day visits, park your RV at the campground and take BART from Colma or Daly City stations straight into the city. BART parking lots have vehicle size limits, so plan to leave the RV at your campsite.
