Camping near Coloma, California
Coloma sits in the Sierra foothills of El Dorado County, on the South Fork of the American River between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. It is the site where James Marshall found gold in 1848, and most of the small town is contained within Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. RV travelers use Coloma primarily as a base for whitewater rafting, river floats, gold-rush history, and Gold Country wine touring.
Private riverfront campgrounds dominate the lodging mix here, and they cluster along Highway 49 in Coloma and the adjacent hamlet of Lotus. Coloma Resort features both riverside and off-river sites with water and electric hookups, and full hookup options off-river. Coloma Resort and RV Park offers RV sites, cabins, and tent spots with direct river access. American River Resort is a campground with full hook-up RV sites, tent camping designations, stand-alone cabins, and hot showers. Ponderosa RV Resort sits along the river in the oaks, and Camp Lotus fronts the South Fork of the American River three miles downstream from Coloma, with 43 campsites and 4 cabin units on 23 acres. State-run camping inside Marshall Gold itself is limited, so the private parks carry most overnight demand.
Things to do around Coloma
The South Fork American River is the main draw. Half-day, full-day, and two-day guided raft trips run from outfitters based at or near properties such as American River Resort and Camp Lotus, and float past Class II to III+ rapids including Troublemaker Rapid, a Class 3+ rapid at normal flows of usually 1500-1800 cfs. Calmer sections are suitable for tubing and swimming. Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park covers most of the town and offers a museum, a replica of Sutter's sawmill, a self-guided historic walking route, ranger-led programs, and gold panning. Hiking and mountain biking trails extend through the surrounding foothills. El Dorado County wineries are a short drive on Highway 49, and Folsom Lake and South Lake Tahoe are reachable as day trips.

The Coloma camping season is shaped by river flows and foothill heat. The whitewater rafting season of the South Fork runs from April through October, supported by upstream reservoir releases that keep flows boatable through summer. In the spring the flows can surge up to 6000+ cfs, which raises the class to a 4+ or more, making April and May best suited to experienced paddlers. Wildflowers and green hills peak in April and May.
Summer is the high season for families and first-time rafters. Daytime temperatures typically are in the 90s Fahrenheit and will often spike over 100 degrees for several weeks during the summer, nights stay mild, and rainfall is near zero, which also means heightened wildfire awareness and possible campfire restrictions. Reservations fill weeks in advance for summer weekends. September and October bring cooler air, smaller crowds, and steady flows. Winter is the wet season; rafting outfitters scale back, some private campgrounds reduce services, and Marshall Gold remains open year-round.

How to book RV sites near Coloma
The private riverfront campgrounds near Coloma take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, not through ReserveCalifornia. Coloma Resort, Coloma Resort and RV Park, American River Resort, Ponderosa RV Resort, and Camp Lotus all accept direct bookings and recommend reserving well ahead for summer weekends and rafting-package dates. Camp Lotus highly recommends reservations for all weekend camping, with a refundable deposit policy for bookings made at least 10 days in advance; similar terms are common at the other parks. Day-use access and any group facilities at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park are handled through California State Parks and ReserveCalifornia. For rafting combined with camping, many outfitters bundle a campsite with the trip when booked together.
What to expect on the ground
Sites lean rustic-private rather than state-park polished. Expect grass and gravel pads under oak and pine, fire rings, picnic tables, and frequent river noise from the South Fork. Coloma Resort, Coloma Resort and RV Park, American River Resort, and Ponderosa RV Resort offer a mix of water-and-electric and full-hookup sites, and at Camp Lotus each RV site has drinkable water, electricity and a dump station. Many campgrounds offer only 30-amp service or no hookups at all. Big-rig access is workable on Highway 49 but interior roads can be tight and shaded by mature trees, so check site dimensions before booking a longer coach. Cell service is patchy and Wi-Fi is limited. Summer days are hot and dry, and shade and river access matter more than amenities.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Coloma, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Coloma, CA?
RV rental in Coloma is one of the most affordable ways to experience California Gold Country. On RVezy, towable trailers near Coloma average around $120 per night and motorhomes average about $200 per night, with listings starting from roughly $90 per night for smaller travel trailers and campervans. Larger Class A motorhomes typically range from $225 to $400. Hosts set their own pricing, so booking midweek or during the shoulder seasons of April, May, September, and October stretches your budget further. For a cheap RV rental in Coloma, filter by travel trailers under 24 feet, which usually have lower nightly rates and better fuel economy along Highway 49. Pro tip: bundling a delivered, set-up trailer at American River Resort often costs less than a hotel in Placerville plus a campsite combined.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Coloma%2C%20CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Coloma?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Coloma for almost every rig on RVezy. California's Class C license covers any motorhome, also called a housecar, that is 40 feet or shorter, and that includes the campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers most guests choose for a Coloma RV trip. You will need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and your ID is verified right inside the RVezy platform, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. Most first-timers are surprised how quickly they're cruising Highway 49 toward Sutter's Mill on their rent an RV in Coloma adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Coloma?
Every RV rental in Coloma booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 49 with real peace of mind. The protection plan isn't traditional insurance, but it covers most damage to the vehicle and gives you meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on your trip. RVezy offers different coverage tiers, and you, the guest, choose the level that fits your comfort during checkout, with roadside assistance included in every plan. That means whether you're parked along the South Fork of the American River or driving up to Lake Tahoe, help is one phone call away. It's the kind of safety net that makes first-timers exhale.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Coloma RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy that applies platform-wide, so you won't see different cancellation rules on different listings. The exact refund depends on how far out your trip is when you cancel, and there's a built-in window after booking where you can change your mind. If a host ever cancels on you, you'll receive a full refund or RVezy credits with no penalty to you. The support team is available before, during, and after your trip if anything comes up, like a wildfire closure during late summer fire season in El Dorado County. Pro tip: book your American River campsite as soon as your RV is confirmed, then relax knowing the safety net is there.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Coloma RV trip?
Absolutely, Coloma is a fantastic dog-friendly destination, and finding a pet-friendly RV rental in Coloma is easy on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see only listings that welcome four-legged guests. Coloma Resort and American River Resort both allow leashed dogs at RV sites (American River Resort charges a $10 per pet fee with a max of two pets), and the Monument Trail through Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park is a great leashed walk under shady oaks. Note that dogs aren't permitted on Folsom Lake's beaches, so plan river time at pet-welcoming spots along the South Fork instead. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed so they can confirm any specifics.
americanriverresort.com/camping-lodging/rvs-trailersCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Coloma?
Yes, RV delivery in Coloma is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the rig to American River Resort, Coloma Resort at Sutter's Mill, or Ponderosa RV Resort in Lotus, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. That means you can fly into Sacramento International Airport, rideshare up to Coloma, and arrive at a fully set-up campsite. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, and message them for a delivery quote based on your campground's distance.
rvezy.com/campground/079dd7ca-f0f0-4625-a288-364664effc8aHow far can I drive on a Coloma RV trip, and what about mileage policies?
You've got tons of range from Coloma, and many hosts on RVezy offer generous daily mileage allowances, with some listings even featuring an RV rental with unlimited mileage perfect for big loop trips. From Coloma you're roughly 50 miles to Sacramento, 80 miles to South Lake Tahoe via Highway 50, 110 miles to Napa Valley, 165 miles to San Francisco, and about 175 miles to the western entrance of Yosemite National Park. Each listing displays its included miles and per-mile overage rate up front, so you can budget without surprises, and your RVezy protection coverage is valid throughout the U.S. and Canada. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Coloma that loops through Tahoe and Yosemite, filter for unlimited-mileage rentals to keep the meter from running.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhere are the best campgrounds near Coloma to park my RV?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Coloma. American River Resort on New River Road offers about 28 designated RV sites on 30 wooded acres along the famous Troublemaker Rapid, with full hookups (30-amp power, water, sewer) and an on-site dump station at the exit. Coloma Resort on Mt. Murphy Road sits next to Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park with full-hookup riverfront RV sites, a swimming pool, and a camp store. Ponderosa RV Resort just minutes downstream in Lotus has roughly 136 sites, and Beals Point Campground at Folsom Lake (about 25 miles southwest) offers full-hookup sites year-round. Local insider tip: ask for a riverside site at American River Resort to fall asleep to the sound of the South Fork.
americanriverresort.com/camping-lodging/rvs-trailersWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Coloma?
Coloma is a true four-season destination, but the sweet spot for most RV travelers is April through early June and again from mid-September through October, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 80°F range and the river is alive with rafters and wildflowers. Summer (June through August) is hot, with daytime temperatures often climbing into the 90s and occasionally over 100°F, perfect for tubing the South Fork but tough on rigs without strong air conditioning. Winters are mild by mountain standards, with highs in the low 50s, and Coloma Resort stays open year-round for quiet riverside reset trips. Pro tip: book your motorhome rental in Coloma for early fall to catch crisp campfire nights and vibrant foliage in Gold Country.
coloma.com/weather/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Coloma?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV in Coloma is honestly one of the best places to start: most rentals here are easy-to-handle Class C motorhomes, campervans, or travel trailers under 30 feet, which feel manageable on Highway 49's two-lane curves. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and dump procedures, so you're never left guessing. You can also message your host with questions before you book, and reviews from real guests help you pick a host known for clear walkthroughs. Local insider tip: stick to Highway 49 between Auburn and Placerville for your first day's drive, it's well-paved and gentle, and avoid the narrow one-lane Mt. Murphy Bridge if you're driving anything over 25 feet.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/driver-license-classes/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV in Coloma?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Coloma includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, covering flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns whether you're parked at Coloma Resort or driving up Highway 50 toward Echo Summit. One phone call connects you to a dispatcher who can send help to spots like Pilot Hill, Lotus, or even more remote sites in the Eldorado National Forest. Your host is also typically a quick text away for questions about how a system works, since hosts are real people who know their RV inside and out. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before pickup and snap a photo of your RV's VIN and plate so dispatchers can help fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Coloma RV rental on a road trip across state lines?
Yes, interstate RV road trips from Coloma are not only allowed, they're encouraged by many hosts. Popular routes include heading east on Highway 50 to South Lake Tahoe (about 80 miles) and continuing into Nevada toward Reno (135 miles), or rolling north on I-80 toward Oregon's Crater Lake (about 380 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval, since RVezy protection coverage is valid throughout the U.S. and Canada, so message the host before booking if Vancouver or Banff are on your wish list. Important: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't extend south of the border. Pro tip: a classic Coloma loop is Highway 49 north to Grass Valley, then east through Truckee and back via Tahoe, total roughly 220 miles of Sierra scenery.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Coloma RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variable costs, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get roughly 10 to 14 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer typically lands around 10 to 12 mpg. California gas prices in El Dorado County usually run higher than the national average, so figure roughly $5 per gallon as a planning number. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop from Coloma to Tahoe and back in a Class C, that's about $150 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Placerville or Cameron Park before climbing Highway 50, where prices jump noticeably at South Lake Tahoe stations.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Coloma?
Book early and you'll thank yourself. Beals Point and Peninsula campgrounds at Folsom Lake State Recreation Area release reservations through ReserveCalifornia.com exactly six months in advance at 8 a.m. Pacific Time, and summer weekends sell out within minutes. American River Resort and Coloma Resort take direct reservations and fill up fast for Memorial Day, July 4th, and fall festival weekends, so aim for 3 to 4 months out. For weekday spring or fall trips, 2 to 4 weeks is usually enough. Pro tip: if your dates are locked, set up a free cancellation alert for Peninsula Campground, you'll often catch a riverside site someone else gave up.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Coloma?
Coloma driving is scenic and very manageable, but a few local quirks are worth knowing. Highway 49 between Auburn and Placerville is a winding two-lane road with tight curves and occasional 25 to 35 mph turns: gorgeous, but go slow and use pull-outs. The Mt. Murphy Bridge into Coloma Resort is a one-lane bridge with weight and length limits, so larger Class A motorhomes should access via the New River Road side instead. Summer afternoons can bring hot pavement and the occasional rockslide along river canyons, while winter storms (December through March) can bring chain controls on Highway 50 east of Placerville toward Tahoe. Local insider tip: check Caltrans QuickMap before any Sierra drive, it shows live road conditions and chain requirements.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at Coloma area campgrounds?
You'll find a great mix of full-service and rustic options for RV camping in Coloma. American River Resort offers 30-amp full hookups with water and sewer, free hot showers, a swimming pool, a catch-and-release fishing pond, and an on-site dump station at the exit, very convenient on your way out. Coloma Resort has full-hookup RV sites, a swimming pool, a camp store for propane and supplies, and direct river access for tubing and gold panning. Beals Point Campground at Folsom Lake provides full hookups in select sites, plus a sanitation dump station and accessible showers. Peninsula Campground is more rustic with no hookups but has flush toilets and showers. Pro tip: top off fresh water at your departing campground, fill stations between Coloma and Tahoe are limited.
americanriverresort.com/camping-lodging/rvs-trailersWhat features and amenities come standard in Coloma RV rentals?
Coloma RV rentals are surprisingly well equipped. Most rigs on RVezy come with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, real beds for 2 to 8 people, climate control with both heat and AC, seatbelted seating for travel, a propane system, and a freshwater tank. Many also include a generator for boondocking, a TV, and Wi-Fi or cellular boosters, useful since cell service can dip in the American River canyon. Each listing shows exactly what's included up front, so you can match the rig to your trip. Local insider tip: for summer Coloma trips, prioritize a rental with strong dual AC units and an awning, you'll thank yourself when temperatures hit 95°F at Troublemaker Rapid.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Coloma%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for Coloma RV rentals?
Hosts offer plenty of useful add-ons to customize your campervan rental in Coloma or motorhome experience. Common extras (with typical fees) include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camping chairs and tables ($10 to $25), generators ($20 to $50 per day if not included), bike racks, paddleboards for the South Fork, and pet cleaning fees ($25 to $75) on pet-friendly listings. For pickup, you can either grab the RV at the host's location near Sacramento, Folsom, or Placerville, or choose Delivery and have it set up at your campground. Mileage policies vary by listing and are shown clearly before booking. Pro tip: ask your host about adding a tubing package, it's the quintessential Coloma summer experience.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Coloma%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Coloma RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform when you book, never directly to the host with cash or off-platform transfers. A typical booking is split into a deposit at booking and the balance closer to your trip, and a refundable security deposit (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the rig was returned in good shape. To avoid any deposit hiccups, do a thorough video walkaround with your host at pickup, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, dump the tanks if required (American River Resort has a handy dump station at the exit), and clean up after pets. Pro tip: snap dated photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff for your own records.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Coloma during the summer heat, and how do I stay comfortable?
Yes, summer is peak season for a Coloma RV trip, you just want to plan around the heat. July and August daytime highs in Coloma average in the upper 80s and regularly spike over 100°F. Choose a rental with strong rooftop AC (ideally dual units on Class C motorhomes), park in shaded oak-canopy sites at American River Resort or Coloma Resort, and run errands or drive in the cool morning hours before 11 a.m. Float Troublemaker Rapid down to Henningsen Lotus Park between May and September to cool off, that family-friendly drift is a Coloma classic. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (April to May, late September to October) deliver 70s and low-80s daytime temperatures, fewer crowds, and the smartest spend of your dollar.
