Campgrounds and RV parks near Copperopolis, CA

Water activities anchor most trips. Lake Tulloch offers over 55 miles of shoreline for boating, swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, kayaking, and fishing, with rentals and a gas dock available at Lake Tulloch RV Campground and Marina. New Melones Lake, a short drive north, expands the options with deeper water and federal recreation areas managed by the Bureau of Reclamation. Inland, families visit Columbia State Historic Park for gold-panning, stagecoach rides, and preserved 1850s storefronts, plus Moaning Caverns and Mercer Caverns for guided cave tours. Calaveras Big Trees State Park, roughly an hour east, protects two groves of giant sequoias with stroller-friendly trails. Yosemite's western entrances are reachable as a long day trip. Closer to camp, Murphys offers tasting rooms, ice cream, and a walkable Main Street.

Copperopolis has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot, arid, and mostly clear, while winters are cool and wet. July is typically the warmest month, with afternoon temperatures on the foothill reservoirs often exceeding 90°F. Lake levels at Lake Tulloch are managed by the Oakdale and South San Joaquin Irrigation districts as part of the Tri-Dam Project, and summer drawdowns for downstream agriculture can affect shoreline access in dry years. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures and are generally the most comfortable times to camp. March is the wettest month, with rainfall averaging just over four inches and the area's highest humidity. Winters are cool rather than snowy at this elevation, though light snow does occur occasionally in December and February. Wildfire season runs from late summer through October, and Cal Fire restrictions on open flames are common at that time. Boaters should also note that New Melones Lake currently requires a mandatory quarantine or decontamination wash for incoming boats to limit the spread of the invasive golden mussel.

Expect Sierra-foothill scenery: rolling oak woodland, exposed granite, and reservoir shorelines rather than alpine forest. Most private parks in the area offer 30- and 50-amp service, water, sewer, and showers, and several have pools, laundry, and pet areas. Cell coverage is generally reliable in Copperopolis, Angels Camp, and Columbia, but thins quickly once roads climb into the higher Sierra. Summer days are hot and dry, so shaded sites and air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Lake Tulloch sites can place rigs near the waterfront with room to tie up a boat. Highway 49 is paved and RV-friendly, though some side roads to lakes and caverns are narrow with tight turns. Stock up on groceries and fuel in Copperopolis, Angels Camp, or Sonora before heading farther east.
