Campgrounds and RV parks near East Oakdale, CA

Water recreation drives most trips. Turlock Lake has 26 miles of shoreline when open, with swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating planned under its new operator. McConnell State Recreation Area sits on the banks of the Merced River with shady trees, grassy fields, and a river offering fishing, swimming, and relaxation. Summertime fishing yields largemouth, smallmouth and striped bass, bluegill, catfish, and more. Caswell Memorial activities include campfire programs, picnicking, fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, biking and hiking. Wildlife viewing is also popular in the area. Day trips from Angels Camp RV Resort reach Calaveras Big Trees, Railtown, the Angels Camp Museum, Columbia State Historic Park, Moaning Caverns, and Murphys. Yosemite National Park is reachable as a long day trip via Highway 120.

The region has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, so timing matters for both comfort and access. Summer brings reliable sun and warm water, but afternoon highs in the valley regularly push into the mid-90s Fahrenheit, and shade matters when choosing a site. Riverfront state parks help: the McConnell campground offers 21 family sites situated comfortably in the shade of sycamore and cottonwood trees, and the Caswell Memorial campground sits in a secluded oak grove near the Stanislaus River. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for valley camping, with mild days and cool nights. Winter is the wet season, and tule fog can be heavy in the valley overnight and into the morning. Reservation availability and concession services follow the season too. Turlock Lake has been closed since 2020, when the previous concessionaire ended operations, and the park may reopen as soon as summer 2027 under a new joint operating agreement, with no current camping reservations available. Confirm status before planning around it.

Hookup levels vary widely. Private resorts typically offer full hookups, paved or gravel pads, a pool, laundry, and a dump station, while state parks lean rustic. Caswell Memorial State Park Campground includes 64 campsites that are suitable for tents as well as small RVs or trailers up to 24 and 21 feet respectively, but there are no hookups or a dump station. There is also drinking water, flush toilets, and coin-operated hot showers at the campground. McConnell offers 21 shady primitive campsites close to the banks of the Merced River. The campsites are suitable for tents and RVs and trailers up to 30 feet in length. There are no hookups available for RVs, but drinking water and a dump station are available. Cell service in foothill and riverfront parks can be spotty. Expect heat in summer, so plan for shade, water, and early-morning activity. Dogs must always be on a 6-foot leash in both the campground and Day Use areas at state parks in the region.
