Campgrounds and RV parks near Freedom, CA

The Monterey Bay shoreline is the main draw. Sunset State Beach has wide sand, tall dunes, and miles of walking, while Seacliff State Beach offers a fishing pier near the historic S.S. Palo Alto cement ship, where pier fishing is allowed without a license. Pinto Lake is open for non-motorized boating, kayaking, and fishing, with all boats subject to inspection for invasive mussels before launch. Families staying at the Santa Cruz / Monterey Bay KOA Holiday can use on-site pools, hot tubs, jumping pillows, and dog parks. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk amusement park is roughly 20 miles north. Day trips reach Elkhorn Slough for wildlife viewing, Mount Madonna County Park for redwoods, and Monterey and Big Sur to the south.

The Central Coast climate stretches the camping season across the full year, but conditions and availability shift by quarter. Summer and early fall are peak: coastal fog burns off to clear afternoons, and reservations at Sunset State Beach and Santa Cruz / Monterey Bay KOA Holiday fill weeks or months ahead, especially on weekends and holidays. September often delivers the warmest temperatures of the year along this stretch of coast. Winter brings the bulk of the annual rainfall, with December through February typically the wettest stretch. Pinto Lake RV Park and Seacliff Center RV Park stay open year-round, as do the South Camp loop and group camp at Sunset State Beach. The Dunes and Pine Hollow loops at Sunset State Beach close from October through mid-March. Spring is mild and green, with wildflowers in the dunes and lighter campground demand outside of holiday weekends. Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds camping is generally tied to scheduled events, so availability varies by month.

Sites range from grassy, full-hookup lake spots at Pinto Lake RV Park to pine-shaded coastal sites at Sunset State Beach. State park sites at Sunset generally have a picnic table, fire ring with grill, food locker, drinking-water spigots, and flush toilets, but no hookups, with a 31-foot maximum RV length and a dump station on-site. KOA sites include water, electric, sewer, and Wi-Fi, with cabins and tent sites also on offer. Seacliff Center RV Park provides full hookups in a compact layout near the beach entrance; rigs are limited to about 34 feet. Coastal weather changes quickly, so layers and a windbreak are useful even in summer. Dogs are not allowed on the beach at Sunset State Beach, so check rules before bringing pets.
