Campgrounds near Georgetown, California
Georgetown sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills of El Dorado County, roughly an hour northeast of Sacramento on the Georgetown Divide between the Middle and South Forks of the American River. The town is a practical base for RV travelers heading to Gold Country, Eldorado National Forest, and the whitewater corridor around Coloma and Lotus. Most full-hookup options are clustered down the hill along Highway 49, where the South Fork American River runs through the historic Coloma valley. Coloma Resort and Coloma Resort and RV Park offer riverfront RV and tent sites near Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. American River Resort spreads across roughly 30 wooded riverfront acres and sits along the famous Troublemaker Rapid, combining RV sites, tent camping, glamping, and cabins. Ponderosa RV Resort and Camp Lotus round out the local options for travelers who want river access without driving deep into the national forest. Higher-elevation Forest Service campgrounds sit east of town in Eldorado National Forest and operate on a seasonal schedule.
Things to do near Georgetown
Whitewater rafting drives most summer trips. The South Fork American River is the busiest commercial whitewater run in the western United States, with Class III rapids like Troublemaker between Coloma and Salmon Falls. Outfitters operate directly out of Coloma Resort, American River Resort, and Camp Lotus, so guests can walk from their site to the put-in. Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma preserves Sutter's Mill, where the 1848 gold strike began, and offers gold panning, museum exhibits, and riverside trails. The Georgetown OHV staging areas and forest roads on the Georgetown Divide draw off-road riders. Anglers fish the river for trout and smallmouth bass, and El Dorado County wineries sit a short drive south near Placerville and Fair Play.

The South Fork rafting season generally runs from late spring through early fall, with the highest, coldest flows in May and June and warmer, family-friendly water in July and August. Private riverfront resorts in Coloma and Lotus stay open year-round but see peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with weekends booking out weeks ahead.
Summer in the foothills is hot and dry. Daytime highs in the upper 80s to mid 90s are normal in July and August, and afternoon shade and river access become priorities. Fire restrictions are common in peak summer, and many private campgrounds and Forest Service sites limit or ban open flames when conditions are extreme. Spring brings green hillsides, wildflowers, and strong river flows. Fall offers cooler nights, lower crowds, and reliable weather through October. Winter is cold and wet at Georgetown's roughly 2,600-foot elevation, with rain in the valley, snow at higher elevations, and most Eldorado National Forest campgrounds closed from late fall through late spring.

We booked the dude for an annual trip to a festival for our family (wife + 3 yr old daughter). The RV was absolutely perfect for the trip. My daughter was very excited about the bunk beds! We didn't use the TVs but there were several, including one outside, and a great library of family friendly DVDs. Everything was in working order which is generally not the case with most RVs and it drove perfectly. The host was amazing as well - super nice and very well prepared. It made the whole experience super easy. Overall, I'd highly recommend and plan on booking again next year!
Bradley H. - Jul 2026
This was our first experience renting an RV and I have to say the process was smooth and the hosts provided all the information needed including helpful videos for setup and take down. Highly recommend.

How to book
Private campgrounds along the South Fork, including Coloma Resort, Coloma Resort and RV Park, American River Resort, Ponderosa RV Resort, and Camp Lotus, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends, July Fourth, and Labor Day fill first, so book full-hookup RV sites several weeks to a few months ahead. Rafting outfitters that operate out of these resorts often bundle camping with trips, and rafting guests sometimes get priority on nights tied to a booked trip. Eldorado National Forest campgrounds, including sites in the Crystal Basin and Union Valley areas east of Georgetown, are reserved through Recreation.gov or by phone at 1-877-444-6777, generally from four days to six months in advance. Some forest sites remain first-come, first-served and must be claimed in person on arrival.
What to expect
Roads down to the river from Georgetown are steep and winding. Highway 193 and Marshall Grade drop sharply into the Coloma valley, so larger rigs should descend slowly in low gear. Riverfront RV sites at American River Resort offer full hookups with 30-amp power, water, and sewage, so big-rig owners should confirm hookup type and site length before booking. Cell coverage is reliable in Coloma and Lotus but spotty on the Georgetown Divide and inside the national forest. Bears are present in the area, so food, soaps, and garbage should be stored properly in a hard-sided vehicle or bear box. El Dorado County campgrounds typically enforce quiet hours overnight. Expect crowds, raft buses, and river noise on summer weekends.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Georgetown, CA
How much does an RV rental in Georgetown, CA typically cost?
RV rental in Georgetown, CA offers great value for a Sierra foothills escape. On RVezy you'll generally find campervans starting around $95 to $150 per night, travel trailers from $115 to $200 per night, and Class C motorhomes from $175 to $300 per night, depending on season and amenities. Summer and holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day) book fast and price highest, so aim for mid-week trips or the shoulder months of April, May, October, and early November when the foothills are gorgeous and prices drop. Pro tip: filter for travel trailers if you want a cheap RV rental Georgetown travelers love, since many local hosts offer delivery to nearby Eldorado National Forest campgrounds.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Georgetown,CaliforniaWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Georgetown?
Good news: a regular California Class C driver's license (or the equivalent from your home state or country) is all you need to drive virtually every RV listed on RVezy in Georgetown. California allows any housecar 40 feet or less, and travel trailers under 10,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), to be operated with a basic Class C license. You must be 25 or older to rent on RVezy, and we verify your ID through the platform during booking, so it's a smooth process. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you're set. Most renters here choose Class C motorhomes or travel trailers, both perfectly legal on a standard license.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/driver-license-classes/What protection and roadside assistance comes with my Georgetown RV rental?
Every RV rental in Georgetown booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive the winding Sierra foothill roads with real peace of mind. During checkout you choose from different protection tiers, so you pick the level of coverage that matches your comfort, not the host's. The plan covers the RV against most physical damage while you're on the road. If you blow a tire on Wentworth Springs Road or need a jump at Stumpy Meadows Campground, one call to RVezy support brings help. That safety net is a big reason first-time renters feel confident booking an RV rental in Georgetown.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Georgetown RV trip?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not individual hosts. Your refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start. The full policy details and any applicable grace period are explained in the RVezy Help Center, and support can assist if an unexpected event like a wildfire closure or major weather event affects your trip, situations that occasionally arise in El Dorado County during fire season. Pro tip: book your Georgetown RV rental as soon as you've locked in your campground reservation at Stumpy Meadows or Black Oak, since those sell out fast, and reach out to RVezy support if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Georgetown RV rental?
Yes, and Georgetown is a great area for dogs. Many pet-friendly RV rental Georgetown hosts welcome dogs, so toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see only those listings. Once you arrive, dogs are allowed on leash at Eldorado National Forest campgrounds including Stumpy Meadows, Black Oak, and Dru Barner (which has horse corrals and miles of dog-friendly trails). The American River near Coloma is a favorite for splashing on hot afternoons, and Forest Service trails around Hell Hole Reservoir offer plenty of room to roam on leash. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, and pack a tie-out leash, since most campsites don't have fences.
fs.usda.gov/recreation/eldoradoCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Georgetown?
Yes, RV delivery Georgetown is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your campground, set it up, level it, hook up water and power if available, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations include Stumpy Meadows Campground (about 22 miles east of Georgetown), Black Oak Group Campground at Stumpy Meadows Reservoir, and American River Resort in Coloma. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to find hosts who offer this. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you're nervous about driving narrow Wentworth Springs Road or Highway 193 in a big rig, since you can arrive in your own car and just enjoy the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038107754-What-is-RV-deliveryHow far can I drive on my Georgetown RV trip, and is there unlimited mileage?
You have plenty of range from Georgetown, and many hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage or generous daily allotments (typically 100 to 150 miles per day included, with extra miles around $0.35 to $0.50 each). Each listing shows its mileage policy clearly before you book. From Georgetown you can reach South Lake Tahoe in about 90 minutes, Yosemite Valley in around 3.5 hours, Lassen Volcanic National Park in about 3.5 hours, the Mendocino coast in around 4 hours, and Sacramento in just over an hour. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Georgetown out to Tahoe and back, filter for hosts with unlimited mileage to keep your budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Georgetown,CaliforniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Georgetown, CA?
The best campgrounds near Georgetown sit inside the Eldorado National Forest and along the American River. Top picks include Stumpy Meadows Campground (about 22 miles east of town on Stumpy Meadows Reservoir), Black Oak Group Campground (great for families and groups near Stumpy Meadows Reservoir), Dru Barner Equestrian Campground (about 6 miles from Georgetown, dog-friendly and quiet), American River Resort in Coloma (full hookups and swimming hole access), and Coloma Resort along the South Fork American River. Pro tip: most Forest Service sites near Georgetown have no hookups, so book an RV with a generator and a full freshwater tank for the best experience.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/1063When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Georgetown, CA?
Late April through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping Georgetown adventures. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers, big American River whitewater flows, and daytime highs in the 60s to low 70s. Summer (June through August) is hot and dry with highs typically in the upper 80s to mid 90s at Georgetown's 2,600-foot elevation, cooler at higher Crystal Basin lakes. Fall (September to mid-October) brings warm days, crisp nights, smaller crowds, and oak and dogwood color. Winter is mild in town (highs in the low 50s) but higher-elevation campgrounds close. Pro tip: book a September trip for Stumpy Meadows, the water is still warm enough to swim and you'll have the lake nearly to yourself.
weather.gov/sto/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Georgetown?
Yes, and Georgetown is a forgiving place to learn. If it's your first time renting an RV, choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer (20 to 25 feet) and you'll feel comfortable quickly. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, dump valves, generator, leveling, and slide-outs, so you're never left guessing. You can also message the host beforehand with any questions. The main approaches, Highway 193 and Wentworth Springs Road, are paved but narrow and winding, so take it slow and use pullouts. Pro tip: pick up your RV in the morning, drive straight to a quiet campground like Dru Barner, and do your first night close to home, you'll feel like a pro by day two.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Georgetown trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat on Highway 49 near Coloma, a dead battery at Loon Lake, or a generator issue deep in Eldorado National Forest, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also typically reachable for quick troubleshooting (loose connections, propane switchover, slide-out hiccups) and many issues resolve in minutes. Cell coverage is solid in Georgetown town but thin in the high country east of Stumpy Meadows, so save the RVezy support number offline before heading up. Pro tip: do a full walkthrough at pickup and test the generator before leaving town, problems caught early are problems easily solved.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039104454-Roadside-assistance-coverageCan I take my Georgetown RV rental across state lines or into Mexico or Canada?
Interstate travel is fine, and RV road trip from Georgetown adventures regularly cross into Nevada (Reno is about 2 hours), Oregon (Crater Lake roughly 8 hours north), and Arizona without extra paperwork. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper documentation, so message the host directly through the listing to confirm before booking a cross-border trip. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not apply south of the border. Popular multi-state loops include Lake Tahoe, Reno, and back through Yosemite. Pro tip: confirm cross-border plans with your host at least a few weeks ahead so they can adjust the booking if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Realistic mileage helps you plan smart. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 mpg, and tow vehicles pulling travel trailers around 10 to 14 mpg. California gas prices typically run higher than the national average; expect to pay a premium in the Sierra foothills, with the cheapest fuel usually in Auburn or Placerville rather than at the lone station in Georgetown itself. For a typical 4-night trip with 250 to 350 total miles, budget a few hundred dollars for fuel. Pro tip: top off in Placerville or Cool before climbing into the Crystal Basin, prices rise and stations thin out as you head east.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Georgetown?
For peak summer dates (June through Labor Day) and any holiday weekend, book your campground reservation 4 to 6 months ahead, the moment the booking window opens. Most Forest Service campgrounds around Georgetown, including Stumpy Meadows, Black Oak, Yellowjacket, and Sunset, are reservable up to 6 months in advance through Recreation.gov, the official federal reservation system. American River Resort and Coloma Resort book directly through their own websites and fill up fast for whitewater season (May to July). Shoulder-season trips in late September and October are easier, often a week or two ahead is enough. Pro tip: lock in your campsite first, then book your RVezy rental, that way you know exact dates, length limits, and whether you need delivery.
recreation.gov/What are the local driving conditions like around Georgetown?
Driving around Georgetown is straightforward if you respect the terrain. The town sits at about 2,600 feet on a ridge in the Sierra foothills, and the main approaches, Highway 193 from Cool and Wentworth Springs Road heading east, are paved but narrow with sharp curves and steep grades. Big rigs (Class A or 30+ foot trailers) should drive slowly, use lower gears on descents, and yield at pullouts. Forest service roads east of Stumpy Meadows can be rough gravel and are not RV-friendly past a certain point, so stick to designated campgrounds. Summer thunderstorms occasionally bring brief downpours, and winter can bring snow above 4,000 feet. Pro tip: avoid driving Highway 193 between Georgetown and Auburn after dark, deer activity is heavy and the curves are unforgiving.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Georgetown?
Expect a mix, and it helps to know what's where. Forest Service campgrounds around Georgetown like Stumpy Meadows, Black Oak, Dru Barner, and Loon Lake offer picnic tables, fire rings, vault or flush toilets, and potable water at most sites, but no hookups, no showers, and limited or no on-site dump stations. For full hookups (water, electric, sewer) head to Coloma Resort or American River Resort along Highway 49, or an RV park in the Placerville area about 30 minutes south. The most reliable dump stations and freshwater fills are in Placerville and at select Crystal Basin campgrounds like Sunset. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank and dump before leaving the foothills, the high-country lakes are stunning but services are sparse.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/1063What's typically included inside a Georgetown RV rental?
You'll be surprised how stocked these rigs come. Most Georgetown RV rentals on RVezy include a queen or king bed, sleeping for 4 to 8 people with convertible dinettes and bunks, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, a furnace, propane, a generator or solar setup, and seatbelts at designated travel seats. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and basic kitchenware. Wi-Fi is hit or miss in Eldorado National Forest regardless of the RV, since cell signal is the limiting factor. Each listing's amenities are detailed, so you can match the rig to your trip. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to make sure you have room for everyone in your family RV trip Georgetown crew.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Georgetown,CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Georgetown offer a range of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common extras include linen and towel kits, kitchen packages, generator use (sometimes included, sometimes a per-night fee), bike racks, kayaks, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually from the host's home in or around Georgetown, Garden Valley, Cool, or Coloma, and delivery to your campsite is widely available, typically for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, ranging from 100 miles per day included to fully unlimited, so check before you book. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package on your first trip, you'll arrive at Stumpy Meadows to a fully prepped RV and start enjoying the lake immediately.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038107754-What-is-RV-deliveryHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book a motorhome rental Georgetown trip on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash handoffs with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms there's no damage and the RV is returned in similar condition. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup, take photos and video of any pre-existing scratches or interior wear, and return the rig with fuel and propane levels matching pickup. Pro tip: ask the host about cleaning expectations at the walkthrough, a quick sweep and dumped tanks usually keeps your full deposit safe.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Georgetown, CA?
Georgetown is a launchpad to some of California's most iconic adventures. Top picks for an RV road trip from Georgetown: South Lake Tahoe (about 90 miles) for clear water and lakeside campgrounds; Yosemite National Park (about 140 miles) for granite walls and waterfalls; Lassen Volcanic National Park (about 170 miles) for boiling mud pots and quiet alpine lakes; Mendocino (about 200 miles) for redwoods and rugged coast; and the Crystal Basin lakes just east of town (Union Valley, Loon Lake, and Wrights Lake, all under an hour). Pro tip: pair Georgetown with Coloma's Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, the spot where the 1848 Gold Rush began, just 25 minutes from town.
