Campgrounds near Ione, California
Ione sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Amador County, roughly an hour east of Sacramento and within a short drive of three reservoir-based camping areas. The terrain is oak-studded rolling hills, and most local campgrounds are anchored to large EBMUD-managed lakes. Lake Amador RV Park is a privately operated family resort on a 400-acre lake with 13.5 miles of shoreline, offering 113 tent and partial-service sites plus a 73-site Deluxe RV park with full hookups on a private peninsula. Pardee Lake Recreation, run for the East Bay Municipal Utility District, has 141 sites split between the Lake View and Oaks campgrounds, including a renovated 56-site RV park with full hookups. Lake Camanche - North - EBMUD and Lake Camanche North Shore sit on a 7,700-acre reservoir with 54 miles of shoreline, with developed, primitive, equestrian, and boat-in sites. Lake Comanche rounds out the local options. All sit within about 30 minutes of downtown Ione.
Things to do in Ione
Fishing drives most trips here. Lake Amador RV Park is stocked with trout, bass, and catfish. Pardee Lake Recreation holds kokanee salmon, largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, and trophy trout, though state law prohibits body contact with the reservoir, so swimming is limited to the on-site pools. Lake Camanche - North - EBMUD and Lake Camanche North Shore open up boating, swimming, kayaking, and equestrian and hiking trails, including the 10-plus-mile China Gulch trail. Lake Amador also has a disc golf course and a swim pond with a slide. Wineries, gold-rush towns, and Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park are all within a short drive for off-water days.

Ione has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Summer is peak camping season, with July and August highs frequently in the low 90s and almost no rainfall. Reservoirs are at their busiest, sites book out months ahead, and shaded oak campgrounds become a major comfort factor.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Wildflowers, green hills, and mild temperatures make March through May popular for families, though March is the wettest month and storms can move through quickly. Fall brings cooler nights, lower crowds, and steady fishing conditions through October.
Winter is the off-season, but Lake Amador and Lake Camanche stay open year-round. Pardee Lake Recreation is the exception: it closes during the migratory bird season as part of EBMUD's wildlife enhancement program, running from the first Friday in February through the last Sunday in October. Expect rain, fog, and chilly nights from December through February.

This was our second time renting from Patrick and his family. He is excellent at communicating with you and everything was a smooth process. The RV is clean, cute, and cozy and has everything you need to have a perfect trip. We had an amazing trip with lots of memories and will definitely rent from them again for our next RV adventure.

Couldn’t have asked for a better host! This was my family’s first time in a camper trailer and Patrick was able to answer all of my questions patiently. He delivered the camper right at check in and had the AC running for us which made for a very welcoming introduction to Jellystone park. I highly recommend Patrick for anyone wanting a clean and cozy rv!

How to book campgrounds near Ione
Reservation systems vary by operator. Lake Amador RV Park requires reservations for all camping and RV sites, handled by phone or through lakeamador.com. Pardee Lake Recreation accepts reservations in advance or first-come, first-served on arrival, with a two-week maximum stay and a limit of eight people and two vehicles per site; bookings run through the operator's reservation line. Lake Camanche - North - EBMUD and Lake Camanche North Shore are managed by Camanche Recreation Company through a toll-free reservation line and golakecamanche.com, with separate booking pages for North and South Shore; reservations can be made up to a year in advance from the planned departure date, which is worth using for summer holiday weekends. Confirm hookups before booking: Camanche North Shore has no RV hookups, while South Shore and the Lake Amador RV Park do.
What to expect
Campgrounds in the Ione area are foothill-style: oak shade, gravel pads, rolling terrain, and views of open water. Expect flush toilets, hot showers, and laundry near the main marina areas at the EBMUD-run parks, with simpler facilities at outlying sites. Lake Amador's RV park has full hookups and free Wi-Fi but does not allow tents in the full-hookup section. Cell coverage can be patchy down at the shoreline. Pardee is a no-body-contact lake: no swimming, wading, or water skiing, and only approved boats are allowed on the water. Lake Camanche prohibits alcohol park-wide from May 1 through September 30. Wildlife is common, with deer, wild turkeys, and waterfowl moving through campsites year-round. Summer dust and afternoon heat are the most common comfort issues.
