Campgrounds and RV parks near Lake Don Pedro, CA

Water recreation drives most visits. Boating, fishing, swimming, waterskiing, windsurfing, sailing and houseboating are all common on the reservoir. Anglers target bass, trout, kokanee, and catfish, and several marinas rent boats and houseboats. For families with smaller kids, Lake McSwain Recreation Area - MID is the calmer option: the lake has a 10 MPH speed limit, and the Splash-n-Dash Aqua Park, a 150,000 square foot floating inflatable water park, operates near the campground in the summer season. Off the water, Lake Tulloch RV Campground and Marina is a base for jet skiing and waterskiing, while Pine Mountain Lake Campground offers access to golf, tennis, and hiking around Groveland. Highway 120 leads directly to the Big Oak Flat entrance of Yosemite National Park, putting the valley within day-trip range.

The foothills run on a Mediterranean pattern: hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Summer is peak season at the reservoir, with reliable sun, warm water, and full marina operations. It is also the period of highest fire risk in the surrounding Stanislaus National Forest, and wood-burning fire restrictions are common. Campers should confirm current fire rules with each operator before arrival, since restrictions are tightened or eased throughout the season. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures and lower crowds, and wildflowers can be strong in March and April after a wet winter. Winter is the wettest season, with most precipitation falling between December and March. Don Pedro Recreation Agency campgrounds at Fleming Meadows, Blue Oaks, and Moccasin Point accept reservations up to one year in advance. Turlock Lake State Recreational Area campsite reservations follow a seasonal pattern: reservations are accepted from late March through mid-September up to six months in advance, and sites are walk-in only from mid-September through late March.

Most developed campgrounds in the corridor cater to RVs as well as tents. Lake McSwain Recreation Area - MID has 108 campsites, including 42 with water and electric service for tents, trailers and RVs, plus a dump station, marina, camp store and cafe, and lakefront cabins. Turlock Lake State Recreational Area is more rustic: 63 campsites with 15 designated tent sites and the remainder for tents or small RVs and trailers, plus a hike-and-bike site, so larger rigs should check site length before booking. Lake Tulloch RV Campground and Marina offers a mix of lakefront sites and full hookups with 50 amp service. Pine Mountain Lake Campground sits inland from Pine Mountain Lake rather than directly on the water. Cell service is unreliable across much of the reservoir area, restrooms vary from modern to basic, and shaded oak sites are common across the foothill corridor.
