Campgrounds near Lompico, California
Lompico is a small unincorporated community in the San Lorenzo Valley of the Santa Cruz Mountains, tucked between Felton, Ben Lomond, and Scotts Valley in Santa Cruz County. The area sits in a redwood and oak canyon at roughly 800 to 1,200 feet of elevation, with the Pacific coast about 10 miles southwest. RV travelers use Lompico as a quiet base for visiting coast redwood parks, the city of Santa Cruz, and the Monterey Bay shoreline.
Private RV parks cluster along Highway 9 and Graham Hill Road in the nearby towns of Felton and Ben Lomond. The closest options include Redwood Resort RV Park and Campground, Santa Cruz Ranch RV Resort, Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, Smithwoods RV Park, and Cotillion Gardens RV Park. Public camping is centered on Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, immediately south of Felton, which has a developed campground set in a pine and oak forest. Big Basin Redwoods State Park, the next-closest state park, remains in limited day-use access following the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire, and its campgrounds are closed.
Things to do near Lompico
Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park sits a short drive south, with park headquarters, the Redwood Grove Loop Trail, and an Observation Deck offering views of Santa Cruz, Monterey Bay, and the Santa Cruz Mountains. The old-growth grove is a flat, stroller-friendly loop suitable for younger kids. Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton runs steam-train rides through the redwoods and down to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, a draw for families. Downtown Santa Cruz, the Wharf, and the Boardwalk amusement park are roughly a 25-minute drive, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium is about an hour south. Closer in, the San Lorenzo River offers summer swimming holes, and the Fall Creek Unit of Henry Cowell has shaded hiking through second-growth redwoods. Wilder Ranch State Park, north of Santa Cruz, has coastal bluff trails and a historic dairy ranch.

Summer is the busiest stretch. State park sites and the private RV parks along Highway 9 fill on weekends, and reservations through ReserveCalifornia open six months ahead on a rolling daily window. Coastal fog often pushes inland in the mornings and burns off by midday, keeping the redwood canyons cool even when inland California is hot.
Spring and fall are the easiest times to find a site and bring mild temperatures. Crowds thin after Labor Day, and warm, clear afternoons hold into October. Winter is the wet season: most private parks stay open year-round, but sites can be muddy after storms, and the San Lorenzo River runs high. Confirm campground status with California State Parks before booking, since the Henry Cowell campground has been affected by infrastructure work in recent seasons. Big Basin Redwoods State Park, the oldest state park in California, remains in limited day-use access after the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire, and all of its campgrounds are currently closed; check the park page before planning a stop there.

How to book a site near Lompico
Public campgrounds in California state parks are booked through ReserveCalifornia. Reservations are released on a rolling window six months in advance of the arrival date, with new inventory opening each morning at 8 a.m. Pacific time. Summer weekends at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park typically go quickly once the window opens, so set a reminder for exactly six months before the target arrival date and log in at the top of the hour. Some sites at Henry Cowell can accommodate RVs up to 35 feet and trailers up to 31 feet, but each site varies, so check the maximum length before reserving.
Private parks including Redwood Resort RV Park and Campground, Santa Cruz Ranch RV Resort, Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, Smithwoods RV Park, and Cotillion Gardens RV Park are booked directly through each operator, typically online or by phone. Holiday weekends and the stretch from Memorial Day through Labor Day book out earliest.
What to expect on site near Lompico
Sites in the San Lorenzo Valley sit under heavy redwood and Douglas-fir canopy, which means deep shade, soft duff underfoot, and very limited satellite or rooftop solar performance. Cell coverage is patchy in the canyons; expect dead zones on side roads off Highway 9. Roads into Lompico are narrow, winding, and steep in places, so large Class A rigs and long fifth-wheels should plan routes carefully and confirm site length limits when booking. Many private parks along the river offer full hookups, while state park sites at Henry Cowell have no hookups. Nights are cool year-round under the redwoods, often well below midday temperatures, so pack layers even in summer. Food lockers are provided at state park sites, and food storage rules are enforced. Mosquitoes are minor, but ticks and poison oak are present along grassy and brushy trails.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lompico,CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Lompico?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lompico, CA. California does not require a special RV license or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for any motorhome under 40 feet or any towable trailer under 10,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. You will need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there's no extra paperwork. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the approval is.

Yes, every RV rental in Lompico booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you added peace of mind. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Lompico trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), so the same clear rules apply across every Lompico RV rental. Your refund depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and the full policy is shown during checkout and on your booking confirmation before you pay. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps with a refund or rebooking credit. Pro tip: reserve early for summer redwood season and review the cancellation timeline on the RVezy Help Center so you know exactly where you stand if plans shift.

Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Lompico is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their listing. Lompico is a great base for dog owners: leashed pets are allowed in the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park campground and on fire roads in the Fall Creek Unit, and there is dog-friendly access at Loch Lomond Recreation Area nearby. Bring a tie-out, extra towels, and plenty of water. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and house rules so there are no surprises at pickup.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=546Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Lompico?
Yes, RV delivery in Lompico is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who would rather not drive a big rig on the narrow turns of Lompico Road or Zayante Road. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV at campgrounds such as Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, Cotillion Gardens RV Park in Felton, Smithwoods RV Park in Felton, or even your private driveway. They will level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Filter listings by Delivery to see options, and confirm the per-mile delivery fee with the host before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lompico,CaliforniaHow far can I drive on my Lompico RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have plenty of room to roam on a Lompico RV trip. Many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is great for longer coastal routes. From Lompico you are roughly 10 miles to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, about 45 miles to Monterey, around 75 miles to San Francisco via Highway 17, about 150 miles to Big Sur, and around 220 miles to Yosemite Valley. Extra miles beyond your included allowance are charged per mile and the rate is shown on the listing. Pro tip: ask the host directly about an unlimited mileage upgrade before booking, since many will add it for a flat fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lompico,CaliforniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Lompico for RVs?
The best campgrounds near Lompico for RV camping include Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park (about 6 miles south, with developed sites set among redwoods and accommodating many mid-sized RVs), Smithwoods RV Park in Felton (full hookups in a redwood grove, about 5 miles away), Cotillion Gardens RV Park in Felton (creekside with 30 and 50-amp hookups), and Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort in Felton (year-round full hookups). For a coastal option, New Brighton State Beach in Capitola is about 15 miles away on the Monterey Bay bluffs. Pro tip: book California State Parks sites exactly six months ahead on ReserveCalifornia, which is when new dates open.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time to visit Lompico in an RV?
Lompico is a true year-round RV destination thanks to its mild Santa Cruz Mountains microclimate. The sweet spot is May through October, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s°F and nights cool to the 50s under the redwood canopy. September and October are insider favorites — warm days, fewer crowds, and golden afternoon light filtering through the trees. Winter (December through March) is mild but wet, with 50s°F highs and steady rain that makes the forest unbelievably green. Summer fog can roll in from the coast in the mornings but usually burns off by 11 a.m. Pro tip: pack layers any time of year — the redwood shade keeps things 10°F cooler than nearby valleys.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Santa Cruz Mountains?
Yes, first-time renters do well in this area with a little preparation. Most guests booking an RV rental in Lompico are renting for the first time. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, and the dump valve, and you can contact them anytime during your trip. If the winding curves on Highway 9 or Lompico Road feel intimidating, choose a smaller campervan rental in Lompico (Class B) or a 25-foot Class C, or book a host who delivers and sets up for you. RVezy roadside assistance is included with your protection plan. Pro tip: schedule your first drive in the morning when Highway 17 traffic is lightest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every Lompico RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance for issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tows, so help is a phone call away whether you are parked at Loch Lomond Recreation Area or driving Highway 1. For mechanical questions, your host is also a quick text away since they know the rig best. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after the trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave, since cell service can drop on Zayante Road and in Lompico Canyon.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Lompico?
Lompico is a great launch pad for an RV road trip. Top routes include the Pacific Coast Highway south to Big Sur and Pfeiffer Beach (about 90 miles of dramatic coastline), a wine country loop through Carmel Valley and Paso Robles (about 150 miles), Yosemite National Park via Highways 152 and 120 (about 220 miles), Lake Tahoe via I-80 (around 240 miles), and the redwoods of Humboldt County to the north (about 280 miles). Closer to home, a one-night loop to Pinnacles National Park (around 90 miles) makes a perfect weekender. Travel into Mexico is not permitted with RVezy rentals; confirm any out-of-state trips with your host first.
nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/driving.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Lompico RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's predictable once you plan. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs 6 to 9 MPG. Towable trailers depend on your tow vehicle. California gas prices in the Santa Cruz area typically run $1.10 to $1.50 per gallon higher than the national average, so budget accordingly. For a 3-night Lompico RV trip with day excursions to Santa Cruz, Capitola, and Big Basin, most travelers spend $90 to $180 on fuel in a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Scotts Valley or Watsonville before heading into the mountains — prices in Felton tend to be higher.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Lompico?
For the popular spots, the earlier the better — but you've got options at every timeline. California State Parks open reservations on ReserveCalifornia exactly six months in advance, so for Henry Cowell Redwoods, New Brighton State Beach, or Big Basin Redwoods, set a calendar reminder for the 6-month mark, especially for summer weekends and holidays. Private parks like Smithwoods RV Park, Cotillion Gardens, and Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort generally accept reservations 3 to 6 months out and sometimes have last-minute openings. Pro tip: if your top choice is full, check ReserveCalifornia at 8 a.m. daily — cancellations pop up constantly, and a 2-minute refresh can score you a redwood site.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Lompico?
Lompico's roads are scenic but small, so a little awareness goes a long way. Lompico Road and Zayante Road are narrow, twisting two-lane mountain roads with tight curves, and Highway 9 between Felton and Boulder Creek has redwood-canopied stretches that can be dark even at midday. Highway 17 over the summit to San Jose is a busy 4-lane highway with steep grades — avoid it during weekday rush hours (6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.). Winter brings rain, occasional rockslides, and rare snow at higher elevations. Pro tip: choose an RV under 28 feet for the easiest handling on Lompico's roads, or book delivery and skip the mountain driving entirely.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Lompico?
You'll find a great mix. Private RV parks like Smithwoods, Cotillion Gardens, and Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort in Felton offer full hookups (30/50-amp power, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations on-site. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park has 107 developed sites with picnic tables, fire rings, food lockers, restrooms, and hot showers, but no individual hookups — you'll dump at the on-site station and fill fresh water at the campground spigot. New Brighton State Beach is similar with a dump station near the entrance. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before heading into any state park, and pick up firewood at the Felton Faire shopping center to avoid the campground markup.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=546What's actually inside a typical RV rental in Lompico?
A typical motorhome rental in Lompico comes fully equipped: a queen or similar bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8 depending on the rig), a kitchen with stove, oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink, a wet or dry bath with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning, a propane furnace, and a generator or shore power hookup. Many newer rigs offer flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi hotspots, solar, and Bluetooth stereo. Every seat used while driving has a seatbelt, so confirm the seatbelted-passenger count matches your group size. A campervan rental in Lompico (Class B) keeps things compact with a galley kitchen, a small bath or porta-potti, and clever sleeping setups for 2 to 4.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lompico,CaliforniaWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Lompico RV rental?
Hosts in Lompico make it easy to roll out fully loaded. Popular add-ons include kitchen kits, linen and bedding packages, camping chairs and outdoor mats, portable generators, bike racks, propane top-offs, and pet packages. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup, late pickup or early drop-off, and a prep/cleaning service so you do not dump tanks yourself. Mileage policies vary by host, and most listings include a set number of free miles per night with a per-mile rate beyond that, all clearly shown on the listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus the cleaning add-on for a true zero-hassle first-time RV experience in the redwoods.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lompico,CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully online, with no cash handoffs at pickup. When you book your Lompico RV rental, RVezy charges your card for the rental total (nightly rate, fees, taxes, and any add-ons). A separate refundable security deposit hold is placed before your trip, and the amount is shown on your booking before you confirm. The hold is released after drop-off once the host confirms there is no damage, typically within a few days. To avoid surprises, do a walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, return with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if your agreement requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAny insider tips for first-time RV renters visiting Lompico?
Lompico sits in a small redwood hollow in the Santa Cruz Mountains with a mellow, woodsy vibe. For a family RV trip in Lompico, consider basing yourself at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, then spending mornings on the Redwood Loop Trail, afternoons at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (about 10 miles away), and evenings on the Roaring Camp Railroads steam train through old-growth forest in Felton. Don't miss Loch Lomond Recreation Area for kayaking, the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz for a quirky photo stop, and tasting rooms in nearby Felton. Pro tip: cell service drops in Lompico Canyon, so download offline maps before you leave Scotts Valley.
